| Stupid people - surfaces too hot for dogs' paws in Summer OK, I live in the Phoenix area and you can actually cook an egg, maybe even breakfast, on the pavement. The other day I was driving by a Petsmart and here was this un-aware dog owner walking his chocolate lab across the parking lot and then stood in the sun on the sidewalk. This was at 1pm. That poor dog was doing the jig, so to speak. He couldnt lift his burning feet fast enough off the sidewalk. I yelled at the person that his dog was on fire and to get him into the shade. I really think that Petsmart should post a big sign outside the store stating that walking pets across the pavement in the summer in Phoenix,AZ is cruelty to animals. I would love to make that person take his shoes off and walk slowly across the pavement. Just unbelievable. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I think that's a good idea. We are no where near as hot as you guys, and I always feel the pavement before I put any of mine on it. PS DH and I are coming to Phoenix in August, I realize know why the airfare was cheaper in August!llol

| I don't think people realize how hot the pavement really is. I think I sell more summer shoes in Arizona than anywhere else. Some people get it, some don't. During the summer, if you are wearing shoes then your dog should be too. I can't tell you how many paw injuries I hear about because people walk their dogs in the hot summer sun, literally burning off their dog's paw pads Why don't you tell Petsmart management? I just don't think people think about it, assuming dog's feet are made to withstand extreme conditions.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | We get so many people from other states moving here, and they just don't understand how hot the blacktop gets, the concrete gets very hot, but the blacktop can cause extreme burning, I'm so glad you spoke up, and I think it would be a great idea if the local Pet Stores put reminders in the windows.

| I so know what you mean. I went out on my porch the other day barefoot. I will never do it again this time of year! It hurt so bad. I seriously thought I was gonna have blisters on my feet, I was jumping around looking like an idiot That was just on our wood deck! I always feel so bad when I see owners walking their poor doggies on hot pavement!

| I can imagine how hot they get because ours gets too hot for me and the hottest it ever gets here is 97 degrees. Usually it its a hot day here it is the low 90s. I never let mine walk in the street or parking lot pavements on those days

There was just a story on the news here a couple weeks ago about the guy in Phoenix who ran after his mail truck bc he wanted to get something to his Mailman. The guy ran in his bare feet -- and yup, ended up in the ER with burns. Think he had to go to the Burn Unit too...? Unless the dog has major callouses and is used to touching extremely hot surfaces underfoot - there is no way they should be walking on surfaces that could burn the skin on their little paws .

| i am glad you spoke up! i was actually one of those stupid people before. i don't normally walk milu on hot days. but i took her to the AKC competition once, and while i was taking her out on a potty break, one of the show breeders who was there letting her dog go potty yelled at me for letting milu walk outside(from the building to the grass) she said something about pick up your dog, way too hot, just carry them to grass and carry them back in the building. i was very thankful that she said that to me! i had not paid attention to the hot floor, and usually milu communicates with me pretty well, like she would let me know when she is hurting or want to be picked up. (she doesn't like to walk when it's raining) but i think burning can happen so fast! i am so glad she told me! some people are just unaware, which is really sad. it's when the owners get mad at you when you tell them something that they should know! uh, don't they care about their dogs?

| do you think we can move this thread to general forum at least temporarily? it's summer right now, and just in case there are other people who are unaware about this, maybe if they get a chance to see this thread, they won't walk their dogs out in the heat and cook their dog's paws on accident.

| It's not just the pavement that gets too hot. There are spots in my back yard that have no grass and the dirt gets hot enough to burn your feet. My routine in the summer is to let mine out for a while in the morning and the rest of the day they stay in except for short potty breaks.

| I have 4 dogs altogether and it's very easy to pick up a yorkie and walk them to where your going but my 70lbs boxer on the other hand is different so I usually have to run across the parking lot with him..Oh and he won't wear any shoes

| Soft sole booties? They fit like socks and are breathable.
