| How Dare He! I was walking my one year old yorkie, Bear, to the beach as we always do in the summer. As we neared closer to the beach, Bear saw a beagle sitting next to it's owner on a bench. Bear very calmly walked up to the beagle and sniffed him. The well behaved looking beagle lashed out, snarling and raking his claws at Bear. The owner pulled his beagle back and Bear ran under my legs and whimpered. My poor baby hadn't done anything wrong. And then, to my fury, the owner of the beagle glared at me and said, "Keep your play thing away from my dog." I was so shocked and angry, but I simply picked up Bear and walked away without answering.

| Well, I will tell you one thing i learned over the many years i am "owned" by yorkies: I AM A FUSSY MOMMA! I walk my little kids at the beach often, by myself, with husband, with family friends, does not matter, everyone knows our "protocol". Every time we get closer to any larger unkown dogs , larger than ours, we pull away... i have been called names for doing this but i rather be safe than sorry ! Another day it happened at Revere beach, hubby and i and 3 furry kids staying in line at the Kelly's stand, comes a guy with a "sniffing" boxer, i withdrew first and made sure the owner noticed i am not 'for business" and my husband followed the procedure. The guy felt offended but i took the blame for being a little b**** my self... i really do not care, better to be sure than sorry. It turned out the boxer was sweet and dumb dumb friendly and we made "amendments" afterwords. Now, my doggies are the friendliest towards kids, elderly and anyone who offers a smile ... they just "go for it" and i allow it ! But with bigger dogs i rather be safe than sorry , and your story just confirms it to me ! I will keep my ways ... hah hah .. XOXO

| Maybe he didn't want strange dogs around his dog because he knows his dog isn't friendly. Honestly I don't see what the other dog owner did wrong except he could have been friendlier about it

| When Bear was approaching his dog the beagle owner took no interest, just watched Bear get closer. He could have just told me, "My dog isn't good with other dogs, please don't let him get closer." He didn't.

| Well, on one hand I can see why you are upset. He wasn't very polite, and didn't need to be so nasty to you. However, the appropriate thing to do is to ask a dog owner before you allow your dog to go up and sniff their dog. I know I don't like it when other people let their dogs come close to me and my dog without asking. If you ask before you approach then everyone knows to pay close attention so they can react quickly if there is a problem. |

| That's just common courtesy between dog owners. If you know your dog isn't other dog friendly, or people friendly, please let them know. I usually keep Kaji close until I ask "Is it ok for him to say hi," cause you never know.

I let Thor approach other (small) dogs, but we do it slowly, first to see how Thor will react, and also to see if the other owner warns me off. I always tell them that Thor isn't necessarily great with other dogs. Generally other dogs love being around him, I think because no matter what their size, they are always look huge next to him. If a larger dog approaches, I put Thor in a Sit and feed him treats, since I am trying to get him to be less dog reactive. But I ALWAYS tell the other owner that Thor doesn't like dogs approaching him. What really chaps me is when they assure me that THEIR dog is friendly, as if that somehow nullifes Thor's position on the matter. It takes TWO dogs to have a good meet. Basically, it's your responsibility to make sure your dog approaches others respectfully, and to let other people know you and your dog's limits when they approach. I don't think there's any need to be rude. I walk dogs all the time as a volunteer that can't meet other dogs OR people at all because they are in quarantine. We usually just cross the street when we see either coming. But because I am volunteering, I don't want to offend people who approach, so I just nicely say that they can't be touched / greet. If you want to keep your little dog away from big dogs, you can always say your little one was attacked once. Being safe and polite aren't mutually exclusive.

Especially where you say it takes two dogs to have a good greet.
