idk who else to go to first im gonna start that this thread is about a cat, not my yorkie. but i know everyone here loves animals probbably just as much as i do and the pain you have to go through when you realize you have to put one of your best friends to sleep. ady is about 13 years old. i am currently 16 and i have had this cat through everything. an abusive stepdad, drunk fights, bad boyfriends, etc. a few months ago she threw up, pure blood. no food, nothing. just blood. i took her to this horrible vet that told us that she probably ate something bad and was getting it out of her system and gave her a de wormer. but i knew that wasnt it. she is my cat and i know when something is wrong. but hey, am i a vet? no. so i waited a few weeks to see if she got better. then she started loosing wieght. when she was younger she had gotten attacked and had to go through a large surgery and they had to strech the skin on her stomach to cover the wounds, so she had alot of extra skin and lets just say she wasnt a small little thing. in fact, before she got sick she was overwieght. but she lost weight. alot of it. so much that when i touch her all i feel is bones which isnt like my ady. so we took her to another vet, which i heard great reviews on. as soon as he saw her, he pulls down her eyelids and said, "this cat is severly dehydrated". great now i feel horrible. she is a outside cat and we have 3 cats who drink and eat out of the same containers ( i know its bad). so he put a IV in her and pumped some liquid in her. then he took some blood (which took a while because he was so skinny) and tested for feline aids, cancers and liver failure, etc and she was fine with everything. so he gave me some meds and nutical to feed her to try and make her gain wieght back and the meds were to get out an infection that was in her stomach, if any. while i was away in maine, my mom gave her meds but called me and said that she wasnt getting any better. so she took her to the vet and he said that he could take blood and send it away for farther testing, but it was expensive and honenstly we just dont have a couple hundred dollars to send blood just to find out what is wrong THEN to fix the problem. when she went back to the vet she had lost another 1.5 pounds. she wasnt eating dry food or water. so i went the other day and got some good wet food (idk, i thought maybe it would help). she ate it up, then later threw it all up. i fed her more the next day, and she threw it up. this morning after not eating (not sure about water, since i keep her in my room with a bowl of fresh water but i cant tell if she drank any) she tried to throw up again but since no food was in her she just threw up lucus. however, she is peeing in the litter box so she must be drinking, right? i love this cat and i do not want her to starve to death and i know cats will hide thier pain. i think its fine to realize that i need to let her go and stop being selfish for trying to keep her alive when i just cant do much more without spending atleast another 1000 on her. this brakes my heart and i cry about it all the time. am i a bad pet owner because i cant afford to help her? should i keep trying with the food? im sorry again, i know this is for yorkies but i dont have many others to turn to who love animals just as much as i do. if anyone could give some type if feedback i would greatly thank you.. thanks again for reading.. xoxo dyandra.. |
Im sorry that this is happening to you, It is heartbreaking to see your pet get ill like this. I have never owned a cat so I havn't got any experience but the best thing you can do right now is take your vets advice. Its a horrible feeling knowing that you could help them if you had the money but you simply cant afford it. (If you have any other pets I would urge you to insure them) All you can do now is follow instructions from your vet and try and keep your kitty comfertable and warm. Good luck and I hope she gets better x |
Depending on where you are there are vets that work with groups such as the cathouse that will take on some cases of extra hardship from time to time. My heart and empathy goes out to you. They become our dearest friends and we don't want to be the one to make a decision that could have otherwise been different. Take care and hope all goes better. |
I have been faced with the same decision as you, 2x as I had sister cats, age 12 and 13. My Rambo started to lose weight so I took her to the vet and the as soon as she put her hands under her, she pulled back and said that she had a huge tumor in her underside. I almost didn't make it thru the appt as I was in tears because all I heard after that was..."at her age...surgery...not sure of success...yada, yada, yada." I decided to take her home and be with her. That evening, she got progressively worse. I decided to say goodbye to my baby the next day. I didn't want her to suffer any longer and I wanted to make sure that I was there to say goodbye. When her sister became ill the following year, she lost a 3rd of her body weight. She spent the weekend at the animal hospital and they wanted to do transfusion and other procedures. When I brought her home, she had peed on me in the car, which she has never ever done. I brought her inside and she just laid there and didn't want to be bothered by anyone or thing. She still refuse to eat and was losing even more weight. It is really a personal decision that you are faced with. I would recommend that you think about the quality life that your baby is faced with, not the quantity. That was the deciding factor for me. I wish you well with whatever decision you make. Just remember, it is the most unselfish act of love that an owner can make to say goodbye to a cherished pet who is ill. Feel free to private message me if you need a shoulder. Hugs to you and your baby. |
You are not a bad owner. Sometimes the kindest things to do are the hardest. In your heart you know the right thing to do and please do not feel bad for any decision you make that comes from love. |

I'm so sorry to hear what you and your cat are going through. If she is drinking water that is a good thing. Maybe try her on boiled chicken, just a tablespoon or so and see if she keeps it down. We never want to lose our loved pets. But she is 13 and at an age when things do go wrong. As you stated in your thread she is your cat, and you know that something serious is wrong. You two have loved each other for 13 years, you will know when it is time to let her go. My heart goes out to you in this tough time |
Sometimes letting go is the most loving thing you can do for a beloved pet. It's never easy, no matter how old you are or how many times you've gone through it. I wish you peace in what ever decision you and your mom make. |
Honey, it wasn't very long ago that I had to make the hard decision when to let our dear kitty Puff go. He had been with DH and myself when we lived in an apartment complex (one that didn't allow pets) and endeared himself to everyone there. When we moved into our new house we had him another 3 years. He got into a fight with my cousin's cat down the street (they don't vaccinate their cats) and later developed feline AIDS.It didn't take but a few months before he showed signs of illness and my vet checked him for it, Sure enough, it was AIDS and it was HELL telling my DH we were going to lose our boy. Long story short, HE let us know when it was time. Just listen to your heart and pay attention to your kitty. They know when it is time. My heart goes out to you, and if you need to talk please PM me anytime! My best to you, ANNA |
she's gone.. i feel like i let her down.. the vet said she probably had some sort of cancer since about a year ago she devolped a lump on her foot which they said was cancerous so they removed it. but he belived it spread. i feel like such a bad pet owner. like if i dont have the money for chemo then i shouldnt own a pet. but anyway. she is in kittty heaven now. i was literally crying my heart out and sobbing as i walked out of the vet. as i walked out and saw the other pet owners all i thought in my head was "remember the memories because one day you will have to be in my shoes". my little brother and sister didnt take it to well. we told them that ady is in kitty heaven and if you want to draw her pictures or write a note to her that she can read it from heaven. i already notice my yorkie looking for her.. they didnt get along very well but they could be in the same room without ripping each others head off. but i truely think they were just like brother and sister. oh i miss her so much.. she was with me through abusive step parents, bad boyfriends, everything. and i really feel like i let her down. she was throwing up non stop. even when she didnt have anything in her stomach she still tried to throw up. letting her go was by far the hardest thing i ever had to do. she didnt fight it, she just let go and was gone within 3 seconds of the injection as i cried into her face and promised to always think about her. isjfsf now im crying. i just wanted to give you guys who were so helpful to me about what happened. ... i just feel so bad and that i just let her go without a fight.. how horrible am i? |
It sounds that as sick as she was, if you had fought any harder it would have just been more painful for her. Sometimes you have to love them enough to let them go. One of the reasons that she probably went in only three seconds is because she was so very ready, and so very very thankful that you were there with her and for her. True, real love is doing what is right for the one you love, no matter how much it hurts you. That is a lesson that you will have to learn over and over in life. It is also a good lesson for you to remember when it comes to overcoming all the things that you've had help from your best friend enduring. When you meet someone that says they love you, remember your friend and what the meaning of real love is. Then apply that. You know from experience that your mother has been in a lot of relationships that had nothing to do with real love, right? Through your furry friend you have learned what real love is. That is gift that was given to you. Cry as much as you want. Tears are healthy. When you are done. Hold your head up. Remember that you have given love, you have received love, and you know what the meaning of love is. You know more than your mother. You, because of how strong you were during this, will recognize the gifts that come to you in the future, and accept them. Your friend will be waiting on rainbow bridge, where she is in no pain, is playing with all the pets from YT that are there as well. She is healthy and will be there when your time comes. Bless you. |
oh thank you so much. this really brought me back to tears but in a way that i know your right. i had to do the right thing and it was jjust so very hard. the things ady tought me about love and friendship will be with me forever. thank you <3 |
I am so very sorry that you were faced with this. Just remember all the good times that you and ady shared. And don't feel guilty, you did the most unselfish, loving thing a pet owner can possibly do for their cherished baby. Rest assured that she is pain free and will be with you again. Hugs to you. |
I am so sorry for your loss, but it seems to me that you did the right thing she was suffering and it was time. just wake up tomorrow and instead of thinking of her sick think of her before she got sick doing something that always made you smile. |
Please do not ever feel like you have let her down. You prevented her from suffering any longer. Sometimes we put pets and people through things so we don't feel the pain of loss. So that we don't suffer. But sometimes in doing so the pets and people we love so dearly are the ones suffering. You have given a great gift to the one you loved by not allowing her to feel pain any longer. You can hold your head high knowing you most definitely did the right thing. |
