New Puppy Question So, I feel kinda silly asking this but since you have all been there and done that, I need to know. I'm getting my baby boy Fynnlie at the end of this month. He'll be my first Yorkie. One of my mother's friends is on her second Yorkie and she said that for the first six months or so, I had better be there with him at all times. Now, I wish this were possible but I just started a new job and I don't think I'll be able to bring him to work with me everyday. NOT that I haven't asked my boss, because I totally have. But, what do I do? If I can't bring him to work with me, I don't know what I'm going to do. I'll seriously have a panic attack if I'm sitting there worrying that he's at home, scared and missing me and I'll be thinking that something's going to happen! She said that it was possible for him to have an anxiety attack so bad that it could cause a heart attack and he could DIE! She also said that if he isn't fed every few hours and let out to go to the bathroom that he'll die! I mean, what do I do? Really? I'm scared and nervous and I feel like an new mom and it's worrying me to death. I just don't know what to do! If anyone could give me any advice, I would appreciate it so much. Like, really. So much! Thanks! |
It sounds like this lady is scaring you out of even owning a puppy.. I think if you plan things through, you'll feel more confident with leaving your baby alone.. Are you taking off work for your baby at all? |
I have several yorkies when I was working full time and they were fine. How old will he be? How big? If he is tiny he will need to eat frequently, so it's best if you can have someone feed him at noon time if you can't. If not, make sure he has eaten before you leave and leave some food down for him. As far as going potty, you can keep him in a crate or pen and put bedding on one side and a pee pad on the other. Some Yorkies do get separation anxiety when left but I have never had one that did. I don't think they would have a heart attack either. What I do when I first get a puppy is leave every few hours the first few days so they get use to you coming and going. Make sure you have Nutrical on hand in case of a low sugar problem. Congratulations and you will do fine. |

I have 3 yorkies and I did take at least a few days off or more when I got them to get them used to their surroundings. I would recommend getting him late friday or early saturday so you can have the weekend with your baby. What I did for many, many months was drive home at lunch to let my pup out potty and get a little attention. Would it be possible for you to do that? I think things will be fine, don't let this lady scare you or make getting your pup a bad/scary experience. |

Woah, it sounds like she is just trying to make you have a heart attack and die! Goodness, I work full time as well and my pup has made it to 7 months old and is perfectly healthy (knocks on wood) I just set up my kitchen so he would be as comfortable as possible with room to move around and plenty of toys to play with, plus a doggy bed and his crate. I put up a baby gate so he cant wander out and get into anything he shouldn't, and I leave food and fresh water down and now a fan on the counter blowing down so he doesn't get hot (no a/c, boo) I put a pee pad down so he can go potty while I'm not at home, and just an FYI no puppy will hold their pee/poo long enough to die from it. Ps. why is this woman hating on you so much? Is she trying to scare you into giving her your puppy? Geeze Louise! |
OMG this lady sounds way too dramatic! Of course your pup wont die, sounds like shes trying to scare you out of getting one. I work full time 11-7 mon-fri and I have a young pup. I live with my mam and dad and they too work full time but we all work different shifts so Poppy is never left alone for longer then 4 hours. Just make sure you pop down in your lunch to check on the pup if you cant get someone to do it for you :) I would recommend you keep the pup crated or in a safe pen when you are out so they cant wander around the house and get hurt (and go potty everywhere). Dont worry good luck x |
Why would she tell you that? I would love to stay home but unfortunately there are bills to pay. Try to get your baby before the weekend so she gets used to her new surroundings. Can you come home at lunch time? Get a crate. She might whine a bit when you leave but she will soon stop. |
I will be taking a few days off with him. I'm going to pick him up in NC, it's about a seven hour drive there, and then I'll have the weekend and a few days of the next week off with him. He'll be ten weeks old when I bring him home. I am getting a crate for him - which I'm still unsure of on the size. I'm thinking about getting a 24" but some people have said that is too big. The one I want has a divider so I can put that in place, but if he's going to have to be home alone for a while, I'll want him to have a little extra room so he can potty in the potty pad and then have a place to lay down. Also, I don't want to buy one now and then have to buy a new one when he gets bigger. It's just not economical to buy two. Am I over thinking this? Really? I feel like I'm stressing myself out over something not so stressful. I think that lady's "He'll have a heart attack and die" thing has really gotten under my skin. Please, don't think badly of me for saying this but.... I don't want to spend a great deal of money, fall in love with him (Too late, Jessica, you already are in love with him.) and then have him die because of something that I did wrong or didn't do right. I feel like I'm going to be those people in 'Best in Show' and have to take Fynnlie to therapy because I've gone and given him a complex! *sobs hystericaly* I just don't know what to do. |
I work full time and when we first got Pixie is was over a weekend and when we went to work on Monday she had her crate and water and food she did find. She was 10 weeks old at the time and now she is almost 2 years old. Now she has almost the full run of the house. It sound like this lady is just trying to scare you. Your puppy will do find. |
I really hope so. I've done this before, had a puppy, with a Sheltie, but that was along time ago. I think I'm just nervous... |

Do you live close enough to your home where you can let him out around noon or so and play with him for a bit? I have a 14 week old puppy (got him at 9 weeks) and I too also work. I live about a mile from my work so I keep mine in an ex-pen with a potty pad, his toys and his food and water and Oliver has been just fine! I go everyday at noon and he's gotten used to his schedule and luckily he has much better bladder control now so just try to keep the same schedule daily. He's learned to go on the potty pad (it helps if you keep his ex-pen somewhere that isn't carpeted so he'll learn to go on the potty pad easier) and I keep the tv on for him :) My BF thinks I'm silly because I actually leave little kid cartoons on for him as if he is a little toddler! :p No worries, your pup will be just fine!! |
