| new baby I would suggest to make sure she gives as much attention to her dog as much as her baby and include the dog in with baby time after a week or two of bringing home newborn baby. What I mean is let the dog get used to baby smell on them before introducing the newborn to yorkie. Then just a few minutes at a time or less let yorkie smell newborn and if behaves well praise her profusely and tell yorkie this is the new member of her pack. If at first she growls at it or tries to bite tell her no and take newborn away for awhile. Then try it again. Once yorkie is comfortable with newborn let her hang around baby while changing her diaper on the floor. (that's a big maybe and decision left up to mama ) But always use caution. In time and overall I think the yorkie will be fine with the baby. Just use caution and take time in introductions. And make sure they don't neglect the yorkie in the process - always, always include her when baby needs attending to and praise her for any good behavior toward the baby. (for example, if baby needs fed let yorkie sniff the baby or tell her it is okay and let her hang close by while not actually close to nip or lick baby. Do not shoo her away constantly or ignore her attempts to get close to mama.) There maybe several introductions before all become one. Hope this helps. |

Poppy's Mamma ♥ Donating Member | I understand her situation. I have an older cross breed dog who is really spoilt. When my neice and nephew arrived she hated them and would try to bark in their face. Its just the same as bringing a new puppy into the house, they see them as a new pack member and a possible threat. All you can do is not let her get too close to the babies and let her know any behaviour you dont like is wrong. We used to put Jess upstairs when she started to get jelous and she didnt like being left out, so after a while she gave up and accepted the babies were here to stay. Now she isn't like that with them at all and gets on with them really well. Good luck.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I would recommend them taking a special blanket to the hospital to get that "new baby smell" all over it and bringing it to the dog before the baby comes home. The dog will most likely tear in to it and roll around all over it to cover up the scent, but better it than the baby. I also let my dogs sniff at diapers (clean and dirty) just to get them over that initial excitement. When she first comes home, suggest that she allow someone else to carry the baby through the door, so she can greet the dog first. I also let the dogs sit nearby (close enough to smell, but not touch) while I was nursing because they were so curious about all the sounds that a little baby makes when it gets hungry. And for awhile, no matter how good the dog has been in the past- there should always be 2 adults in the room anytime both the baby and the dog are in the same room.

YT Addict | On this note I would recommend the blanket is a great idea and introduce the baby to the former baby outside on neutrel grounds. But let the dog get used to the baby stuff, get the scent and yes be cautious. I will admit my westie Trixie did grab my last sons bootie as it waved near her. But that was all she did from that point on she would go and lay under the crib when he slept as if to dare someone to disturb Luke. But the pup needs to know they are still an important member of the pack |

| I had suggested that someone else carry the baby into the house already and I like your idea about the blanket. When I introduced robby to trixie (thats my dogs name too) my daughter held the puppy and trixie sniffed him. She was very excited at the smell of him and started to nip at him. after a few more quiet introductions they can walk round my kitchen floor unleashed and if tixie misbehaves one word from me sorts it out. but I have to say she can be a bit sneaky and quick a baby is very venerable. Rocky is ok when children visit my friends house but he can get fedup very quickly so he generally goes to his bed and sleeps. he like many yorkies likes older children he loves my daughter I think is because she makes a fuss of him when we've looked after him while my friend goes on holiday. he's not so keen on my son who's only 5 however trixie and my son are the best of friends and trixie isn't interested in my daughter. I don't know what robby will be like yet just have to wait a see but one things for sure I am mum to them all even rocky I will tell my friend about the forum and she will look it up td |
