No Longer a Member | Boys and Their, um, You Know... Well Rizzo has been paying a lot of attention to licking himself recently and I have been trying to discourage this behavior by telling him no and giving him something that isn't gross to chew/lick instead, but he keeps going back to his "man spot" I've made sure that all is clean down there and everything looks normal, just wondering if this is part of their man parts growing in and might stop after he is neutered, or if its a, once he finds it he'll never leave it alone thing? Sorry, it's a weird question, but the only boy dog I had we had him fixed when he was 3 months old (big dog) and I don't recall ever having this particular issue with him. |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Dogs do lick themselves but if it seems he is quite excessive about it...it is also possible he has some type of infection.

| "Man spot" that's funny. I know this is a serious thread, and really, I think it depends on the dog. I've seen some that are more fascinated with their manhoods than others.

No Longer a Member | It's not serious as in life threatening serious, it's just something that I'm looking for input from other boy dog owners. I guess I always assumed it was the unfixed ones that lick themselves, which Rizzo still is unfixed, so it's just an ignorance that I'm trying to fix I guess. Trust me, I feel silly asking the question. |

Thor's Human Donating Member | In all seriousness , you might want to get it checked out. It could be an infection, or there might be some hair stuck in the sheath that's preventing it from going back to sleep. Thor went through a phase where he was licking it constantly, and it turned out to be his "pee string". I think he was licking the urine off. Once I cut it short, he stopped.

No Longer a Member | Okie doke, I'll give the vet a call, he's closed on weekends and it's def not an emergency, and schedule an appointment. Maybe I'm not wiping him down well enough after his potty breaks, he does have the "pee string" so maybe that's all it is. Thanks all. |

| I haven't noticed a lot of licking with Merlin. How old is yours? Could be he just wants it all clean. Maybe it's a "guy thing", like some men always have to make sure everything is still in place????

| We actually had a Yorkie returned to the Rescue for excessive "man spot" licking. The owners were so disgusted, that they gave him up. We were told it was an OCD thing. He eventually was placed in his forever home with people who were way more understanding. IMO, unless he's licking some other dogs "man spot" I wouldn't worry to much about it as long as everything is healthy. My boys do it too. You may want to avoid him licking your face for a while though. |
