| Erect Ears: when, how, and how long to tape Hello everyone! I was wondering if you can give me some advice. I was wondering how long should I wait till I start taping my yorkie's ear? Right now he is about 14.5 weeks old. I am kind of worried because I started to tape his ears and after one day the tape would come off due to him scratching it or the other puppies biting it. His ears would stand up for a day after and then fall back down. I have tried to used masking tape and duct tape over the masking tape to make it more secure, but even this even came off in 2 days. Due to the 2 days of taping, it's only been about 12 hours and only one ear stands up now and the other one is floppy. Should I just leave it alone and just see if it will go up naturally and then just tape it later on when he gets older? If so, how long should I wait and see if anything happens? Oh by the way, his ears are shaved. My other yorkie who is only one day older, her ears are erect after one day of taping and it's been up for about 2 weeks now. She has smaller ears than my male yorkie. Thank you for your time. |

No Longer a Member | When Rizzo was 14.5 weeks (when I got him) he had one up and one down, about 2 weeks later I got him out of his crate in the morning and both ears were up. It takes longer for some than others. And I didn't tape his ears at all, didn't shave them until recently and he has big ears. I say wait it out for a couple more weeks then look into taping. |

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Izzy was the same way...We ended up shaving down the ear and puttin sensitive medical tape on her ear...I cut the pieces to match the shape of her ears...We did this for 3 days...Chaning the tape everyday and letting the ear rest w/o any tape for about 1 hr. Her ears have been standing up ever since.

| It's going to be 18 weeks this Thursday and my kid is just starting to pop up his left ear. Thank God!!!!! I was getting worried because I've been reading that past 16 weeks it's rare they they stay up. My kid's ear stands on it's own now but every one and then it falls down, but i think it's because last night was the first night that it stood on it's own without us taping it. So it might just be weak/new right now. |

| Ziva's ears were up and down - I started to massage her head and ear base whenever I held her and it seemed as if she realized they were there, she started to hold them up more and within 3 days they were up more often than down, by 4 1/2 months they stayed up. They are rather large... |

| I was going to start a thread until someone pointed this one out to me. My baby is 10 weeks and I took him home from the breeder with taped ears. He just couldn't stand it and was scratching at them continually. We taped them for 2 days and 1 was actually up. Now they are both floppy, but he is young. I'm hearing conflicting debates. My vet says it is hereditary and they will go up normally if it's in the family. Other people say to tape them. Does anyone really know for sure?

| Brooklyn is 13 weeks old and her ears still aren't completely standing up. They are kind of up at the base and flop over on the ends and then sometimes they're not even up that much. All it takes is her to look up the slightest bit and they're up. Some mornings they look like they're going to be up and then.... nope. I'm just going to let her ears do what they do. I would like for her ears to stand up, but I cant bring myself to subject her to taping. I massage them and I've trimmed the hair on them. That's about all I'm willing to do. Someone looked at her today and said she didn't look like a yorkie. She looks JUST like a yorkie... with floppy ears. It makes me when people say things like that but she's a little princess either way . |

| well I'm not sure if taping help my pup in my situation... cuz then the last time i taped my pup... was like 2 weeks ago the tape would stay on for 2.5 days max... then he would take it off and his right ear would only stand up for for a few hours max and then go back down.... so i got lazy with the taping and stopped taping his ears... about 2 weeks later, last night all of the sudden when I woke up in the middle of the night... i looked at him and his ears were standing up... i was sooo happy HAHA |

| Addendum: After I posted about Brooklyn's ears never standing all the way up, we had a thunderstorm and when it thundered loudly, Brooklyn's ears stood STRAIGHT up and stayed like that for a few seconds. When she realized she was safe next to me they flopped back over. |
