| First Yorkie--HELP! This is the first dog I have owned that is meant to be raised indoors. Other dogs I have owned have always been outside dogs and larger. This is all very new to me---Gracie has a pen and we have a kitchen to keep her in when we are all sleeping. With her being so small and untrained I dont want her roaming at night. Here is the problem. She barks and whines most of the night. It is horrible! During the day she is great! She hardly ever has an accident and when she does it is our fault for forgetting to take her out. Tonight she was laying on her puppy bed and I picked her up and put her in the pen....she has barked nonstop. What can I do? |

| What kind of pen are you using and where is it located? I personally do not believe in crate training but instead I used a playpen placed right beside my bed when the puppies were very young. I woulsd place my hand in the playpen to comfort the puppy unitl it fell asleep. It was large enough to hold the bed, a wee wee pad and food and water. Once the puppy was old enough to hold it through the night they were allowed t sleep in my bed with me. Are you using a similar mehtod to the conditions at the breeders? Is there anyone or anything to keep the puppy company through the night because it is used to having it's mother and/or it's litter mates to sleep with most likely. I use an Xpen to confine the dog during the day when it cannot be supervised. I hope i can help you and your baby. |

| Congrats on the new puppy. How old is she? I didnt have much problems with Gucci barking or whining, i guess i was lucky. I didnt crate it her either. Thw first couple of months she was kept at nite on a hallway that I have enclosed with 2 baby gates and lead to the bathroom. So she had acces to the bathroom and the hallway, There she had her bed, water, toys and the pee pads that I had in the bathroom. Anyway, I herad here that you can tell her " No", in a stern voice and ignore her and she will get it eventually. Also you can buy this a snuggler. Is like a stuff animal that has like a build in clock or something similar to simualte the pups mom. http://www.snuggleme.com/puppies.html Good luck. Hopefully others have better advise. |

| How About A Floor Of The Closet In Your Room So You Can Hear You? This Is My New "den" For Rocky For When I Go Out In The Day. It Is Lined With Foam To Keep Him Warm But Would Also Help Muffle The Barking. I Gate The Front. We Use This For Day And He Slleps In His Crate On My Nightstand The Last Few Nights Which Has Gone Well. He Loves His Crate And Crawls Right In. I Need To Protect Him At Night Because Of Our Cat And Us Rolling On Him Or Falling Out Of A High Bed. Best Of Luck, Michelle |

| You are on the right track...crate training is an excellent tool and mine are all crate trained. You said you took her out of the bed to put her in the crate...can you keep the bed in the crate so you don't have to disturb her once she gets settled? The biggest reason for her fussing right now is her age. We keep litters together until 12 weeks to prevent these separation issues and foster their socialization/development. You may help calm her anxiety by wearing an old t-shirt and then putting it in the bed with her at night. Your scent may help a bit so she feels less abandoned. Crate training is not cruel, she will soon feel it is her safe space and go in willingly. Keep to a strict schedule and the consistency will pay off. Best wishes. |

| I did the wearing an old tshirt thing and giving it to her to sleep with plus I kept the crate right beside the bed. She was fine starting with the second night, so I know these things work. She was 11 wks when I got her. |

| Our little guys were my first "indoor" dogs, too. Ours were 12 weeks old when we got them, and we got two litter mates at the same time, but we still had problems with them crying at night for about a week. We found that keeping their crate in our bedroom helped. We put a hot water bottle wrapped in a towel in there with them to give them something warm to cuddle up against, and they had towels to curl up on. As soon as we put them in there, we got in bed and turned out the light and didn't talk or anything - basically we were trying to get the idea across to them that when the light went out, it was time to sleep. We gave the command "Quiet" whenever they started crying or barking at us. We did have to get up in the middle of the night to let them out to potty. They would usually whimper to let us know they needed out. That only lasted about a month though - they slept through the night (or at least were quiet through the night) after a month or two. Now that they're grown up, they have a larger crate with a pet bed in it to sleep on. They crawl in there on their own each night and go right to sleep. Hope some of this helps and good luck!

| Hi, I think Gracie wants to be with you in the same room at night. If you put her bed next to yours she will be able to see you, and know she's not alone. The T-shirt thing works, it has your scent and she will feel close to you. Princess has always sleeps in our bed, but Mandy our Rotti has her crate. The first few nights it took about an hour for her to go to sleep, but now she goes right in on her own, and off to LaLa land till morning. Good Luck!

| She slept through the night for the most part last night. I think she is just getting use to the routine. She did have her potty break last night but didn't whimper a bit when she was put in her pen. She has a "baby" in her pen too that she cuddles up to. My dad raises yorkies...they are in a kennel and he keeps a radio going at all times so I turned on the radio so she could get some noise and it seemed to work. |

| Hi, we have had 3 yorkies that we got as babies. I have a human playpen that I put right next to my bed. I bought one of those soft cat tents to put in it for sleeping. They have all loved it. Some paper in the corner for nighttime potty and it has worked very well. Once they were old enough we put them in bed with us. Just keep trying different things until you find what works for you. Good luck. P.S. Just a note to everyone. We were having a problem with Aimee barking and an idea I saw here worked. I have a can of coins. When she barks I shake the can. Boy does she shut up. I don't know why that works but it does. She even backs up when I just show her the can. I wonder what she thinks it is? Anyway, thanks for all the great ideas you all have. |

| She's so little, you need to put the crate somewhere near your bed. They get lonely. Louie slept in his crate near our bed where he could see us. I got him at 12weeks and sometimes when he would cry in the middle of the night it meant he had to pee. For about the first month or month 1/2 I took him to pee in the middle of the night and eventually he learned to hold it all through the night. Sometimes he didn't even have to pee, he just wanted to be held for a few minutes. Please remember to be patient, these little guys have just been ripped away from their familiar surroundings and the warmth of their brothers and sisters and mama...if it cries in the middle of the night, take it to go pee pee, give it a few hugs and then tell it to go night-night. I would put him near you to sleep in his crate. And don't forget to cover the crate with a blankie and put a blankie in the crate as well to make sure they are comfy and snuggly and warm in their sleeping quarters. Good luck.

| I am new too This is what I have done (over much lost sleep). I leave Dollar in my room and I sleep on the floor b/c he is too small for the bed. i tried that and he fell off in the night and hurt himself. SO no more of that (scary!) I just put his food and wtaer in the room at night and a little potty pad and try and sleep as best I can.

| I had that trouble with my prince for about 5 days. We have him in a crate, and he has done well. (sorry everybody that doesn't like crates) When he whined my husband and i gave him a little stuffed animal and petted him for a min. When he got real bad though after we had done this we just said NO! in a stern voice and like i said he only did it for 5 days he's all good now though! good luck |
