| What is wrong with people? Mating in the street......... My husband works construction in the City of Chicago and he loves to come home and give me the daily Yorkie report. He cracks me up with his reports of long coat, short coat, tinies, teapots, latest doggy fashions~it just so cute how excited he is to share his stories. He loves our three almost as much as I do. So when he came home yesterday and shared a story with me I was expecting it to be my (almost) daily report but it was far from his usual cute Yorkie report. It's never good when he starts with-"WTH is wrong with people" followed by a deep sigh. He's what he witnessed yesterday while at a job site in a neighborhood. He sees 2 dogs standing on the sidewalk LOCKED together butt to butt. One is a small Chi and the other he just called a "very cute fluffy small dog". People are actually walking around these two tied/mating dogs who are on the sidewalk in the middle of construction activity and about 15 feet from his cement mixer He's looking around and there are no owners of their 2 mating dogs who are struggling to get apart So he takes the water hose and tries to separate them with a squirt of water but they are just a little too far away. Then he calls out to some of the other workers and all this does is call attention to what was going on. Now a crowd gathers to try and figure out what to do and I guess with all of the added interest the dogs break their tie and the male dog runs off. But the Chi is still there and ALONG COMES ANOTHER MALE who wants to mount this little girl!!!!! He used his water hose again and chased the second male away and the Chi ran off but obviously the damage was already done. When he was retelling the story to me he was just furious at the irresponsible behavior of the people that let these dogs out to roam the street. I don't think I have ever seen him so angry over pet owner's irresponsibility. It is lack of responsibility that causes the shelters to be full and millions of dog to be PTS every year. I was so disgusted by this entire scenario and the irresponsibility of numerous pet owners it feels defeating. In the City of Chicago and the surrounding communities there are so many low cost spay/neuter opportunities there is no excuse to not take advantage of them to prevent things like this to occur.

| Ugh SO wrong and so sick! And that nobody does anything! God people! My dads neighborhood has about 12 houses and is out in the country where all dogs (except his) run around free. There is a sweetheart of a Golden Retriever named Zoey and people that visit us think shes our dog because she's always hanging out in our garage lol. She's probably around 5yrs old. Well there's this psycho Lab who they tie up to a tree outside every day (poor dog, he's psycho because he gets NO proper exercise). Zoey went over there and Titan (the lab) got on her and they tied. My dad looks out his window and sees Zoey yelping so of course he runs out there and the owners of Titan are right inside their fence and don't even SEE this going on... my dads like HELLO?! Do you guys see your dog?! They're all like oh whoops. My dad got them apart but it happened again the next day. Well... now Zoey's having puppies. *sigh* This is exactly the reason you have your pups spayed or neutered. I have no idea where Titan came from or Zoey but I know I sure as hell wouldn't wanna have Titan in my puppies blood. lol. He's even somewhat aggressive.

| All of them? I doubt it.............but I guess it's nice to try to make sense of why this was going on.

| That's just crazy! So there was a line of males waiting to mount this little chi girl? And people think we're crazy. "Oh, it's ok, I'm ALWAYS with her. She's never out of my sight" is what I hear/read about people not wanting their bitch spayed. Yeah, but what happens when she isn't? I know everyone thinks their dog wouldn't do anything wrong, similar to how parents think their skinkids will never do wrong, only be wronged. Well guess what! IT HAPPENS!!!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Unneutered dogs are much more likely to shoot out of the house at every opportunity, males and females! The best way to prevent this from happening is to spay/neuter our pets. I've often wondered if once they are mating, if anything should be done to stop it, I've heard that the male could seriously be injured if you try and pull them apart. Anyone have any tips for this?

| Did anyone notice if she had tags? Maybe she was lost? She may have slipped out of the door. Females in heat can become pretty determined to find a mate. |

| Jodi, this makes me feel so badly for this little female and I can't understand how these owners did not take responsibility for spaying this little female. Compounding that, they let her roam around on the street while in heat. How sad is that? |

The female slipping out would explain one part of the story but there were multiple dogs involved. Nancy~I am wondering the same thing about breaking up mating dogs. The thing about the mating that he was very upset about was the male was turned around to be tail to tail with the female and that he wasn't able to get away.

off the subject but they keep a dog tied to a tree ? I cannot stand that and think it should be against the law to chain dogs like that ! on the little mating incident - I have to wonder too if the little dogs were lost - a female in heat can attract males from pretty far based on what I've heard.....I can't imagine anyone letting a tiny chi loose in the city poor girl I was walking my girls last night and this tiny dog (part Papillion) came racing up to us - he was the cutest little thing but I was like oh crap - he's lost and I had my 2 on their harnesses - didn't know if he was stray or a lost pet and as I stood there trying to figure out how to gather up 3 dogs and see if i could find out if someone was missing a little guy (and trying to keep mine apart from him just in case) a woman came out and starts calling him ! I stood there and couldn't believe she knew he was just running around like that - he would have followed me home had I not stopped I could tell by the way he was so happy to see us. I live near a very busy street so what she's doing with her pet is taking a big chance | |

| I re-read your title, and if you don't pay attention, you'd think people were mating in the street. Now that would be crazy!

| It sure did~he always seems to be in the middle of something too. Do you know where Chinatown is located right in the heart of the city. I'm not sure which neighborhood he was in but I could ask him. I think it was the same neighborhood that someone was shot in a driveby in front of his truck a few years ago. We live in the SW suburbs and it sure scares the heck out of me with some of the stories that he comes home with. I would much rather get his cute Yorkie reports.
