| OMG Terrifying Morning - I am still shaking... Let me set the stage. I am doggie sitting for my sister, Cuddles 4.5 lb Morkie and Lulu 4.5 lb Silky. They are potty trained to go outside. I have had them for a week now. My backyard is fenced in, but we have lots and lots of bunnies. Well, after a week now, the dogs know there will be bunnies to chase so they go flying out the door, across my raised patio, down the 5 steps onto the grass ready for a bunny. We live on a acre, so the backyard is pretty big, and flat and open. This morning, we got up early and I brought them out at 6 am. The sun comes up in the back, so the whole yard is bright and sunny, just like it would be at 12 noon. The girls run right for the grass. Thank God that first thing in the morning they have to pee bad, so the stay close to the patio. I am standing on the patio at the edge, right above them. Both girls pee. Cuddles runs over to the right side of my yard as that is where she poops. Lulu is still in her spot right in front of me pooping, as soon as she is done, I call her up onto the patio. The grass is wet and we have tons of mosquitos, so I want them to potty and back inside the house. So, me an Lulu are on the patio. I am still standing at the edge, watching Cuddles poop, she is about 15 feet away from me. I turn to my left to see where Lulu is on the patio. As I am turning, I look down right in front of me, less than 3 feet away from me on the grass (I am about 3 feet up on the patio), hugging the patio (I guessing stalking), is a HUGE FOX OMG - For that split second as I am preparing to scream, I am thinking "OMG there's a Coyote in my Backyard", "No, wait it is a Fox", "OMG, it is skinny, maybe it is rabid"..... So now the half-ass scream comes out of me...TJ and Roxy are upstairs inside, but the windows are open, so they start barking, as I am running down the patio, onto the grass at Cuddles, SCREAMING her name to scare her to STAY PUT. I grab her, look for the Fox, still thinking it was a Rabid Coyote. It is at the other side of the yard trying to get out. I am screaming, crying, running back to the patio. Lulu is on the floor under the patio dinning table. I have instant headache and crying, OMG, OMG, screaming there's a fox in the yard... Now I am trying to get her without making her run out on the side of the patio where the fox is. So I go to that side of the patio, the fox is out and ran into the neighbors yard. I grab Lulu and we run inside.... My heart is still in my stomach, I have acid reflux in my throat and my hands are shaking....It has been 3 hours now, and I am still in major shock OMG ~ OMG ~ OMG At night I put their harness and leash on to do potty, but from now on, it will be that way in the mornings too... Terrifying experience.... PLEASE, PLEASE let this be a lessoned learned for others, as well as ME |

| OMG what a scary thing to start the morning. I am so glad you were outside with them. If not there is no telling what may have happened. I hope your nerves get settled soon.

| Oh wow I would still be shaking too You are right about foxes being rabies carries and if it was hunting bunnies he'll be back too.

| Gosh, what a shock for you! Thank goodness that fox didn't attack either of the dogs. Are you in the city? I remember reading on here once where a fox had killed someone's yorkie. So scary! I hope you get to feeling better quickly!

| I still can't shake this anxiety feeling We have fox and deer all over by my house. The lot next to me on the right is still vacant land, but it is growing tall grass, bushes, trees, etc...The whole area is really like that. I saw a large red fox about 2 years ago in my yard. It was about 7 am, rainy and dark morning. The fox came in at the back fence (which we didn't have completely secure yet). Stood there for a second and then left. My hubby built the house, so we still have a HUGE dirt/fill mound to the left of my house in the back yard. Shortly after I saw the fox, we noticed that there were claw marks, and a decent size hole at the top of the mound. So the fox was probably going to set up camp That's when hubby finished making the fence secure, and he started to get rid of that mound. We still have 1/2 of it left, but it is going to be all gone in the next few weeks. Just beyond scarey...I can't believe that thing was literally right in front me, stalking Cuddles Hubby said he was probably on his way home from hunting and still at 6 am, they attempt to get a meal, especially if they were unsuccessful at night. So I don't think he was rabid, BUT, I could certainly be wrong... |

| OMG! Sooooo very scary. I can't even imagine. My dads house has a big fenced in yard and we often let the dogs out at night for their last potty break, around 10-11pm, without fully watching them. I know he's seen a fox in their neighborhood before last year. Wow, thanks for the reminder. I think I will be going outside with Jackson from now on.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my gosh, Nicole!!! That is so scary! And you saved the babies! I can't believe how cognizant you were while trying to gather the pups, thinking about how to keep them from going toward the fox etcetera. Good job on being so present, wow! Amazing what we can do in a crisis, isn't it? You should be very proud . But yep, the after effects can leave you pretty shaken up -- after all that adrenaline and "fight or flight" stress on the body, you just feel on edge and worn out at the same time. Lots of hugs!

| Sorry for the fright. I am always on the lookout for unwanted visitors. We get racoons, fox, coyote and the occasional deer. Really eerie to be out in the dark and hear rustling in the brush, or the coyotes howling.

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | oh wow - even if I didn't have dogs a wild fox would scare me - You did awesome getting them away while freaking out - I know the feeling only when Cheri somehow got under our fenced in yard and it was pretty horrible because you move on reaction while trying not to scare the dog - so you really did good ! That fox could have been vicious and while I don't really know their habits - just getting into your yard is not good - is there a way you can safety proof it more so this doesn't happen again or can they find ways no matter what you do ? It sucks to have a nice fenced in yard and not feel safe GLAD YOU'RE ALL OK ! |

| Well this taught me a few things. #1 - I was careless. I should have put them on the harness and leash and walked them into the yard. At 6 am I should have known better. Since I know we have fox in our neighborhood, I have seen them early in the AM and and night. I think I just thought since it was so light and sunny out, and I am not used to bringing dogs out to potty, I just got relaxed... #2 - It really doesn't matter if you have a fenced in yard. Wild animals both big and small can find a way in. So I have to be on alert, since we have a large yard and we live sorta in wilderness. #3 - That really when faced with a potential dangerous animal, I, under extreme pressure WILL risk injury to myself to protect my dogs. I am thinking about it, and I really, really thought it was a rabid fox that looked like a coyotee, and I would have been ok getting attacked, as long as I protected my dogs. ...so I do believe a HUGE lesson has been learned, I also am happy that I can 'react' properly when put 'in that position' - I just hope it never happens again Yes, this weekend we will check the entire fenceline, my hubby wants to find where he got in and fix it. We are also working on getting rid of the dirt/fill mound, as it is obviously attacting the fox - thinking they can set up camp "Fox Hole" is sooooooooooooooo true.... I found photos of a Wild Red Fox, YUP that's what was right in front of me I am STILL feeling uneasy - this is horrible. |
