| Breeder questions I spoke with a breeder the other day at great length. She seemed incredibly experienced and very concerned about her dogs. The breeder is a member of the YTCA and has finished many champions (as confirmed by my google search). The only thing that give me pause is that she only offers a 48 hour health guarantee and does no health screening. She told me that there is nothing wrong with her dogs and suspects that people that do health screening have had problems with their line. That really struck me as off, but then I considered that she's been doing this for 45 years and I'm sure health screening wasn't done 45 years ago. How does everyone feel about this? |

| There are many, many reputable breeders out there. I would take a very long pause at one that does not do health screening. A google search is just that - a search. It is NOT always a good source for breeder information. Go to Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and look for a list of breeders. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | are you sure she didn't mean you have 48 hours to get the new pup to the vet to be checked out or anything he may find will not be covered?

If the dog is over a year old i don't know what kind of health guarantee breeders provide but i think if its under a year then it should still have a 1 year health guarantee against hereditary issues including luxating patella and liver issues. i'm not a breeder so i really don't know what goes into a contract and if it changes depending on age of the puppy. hopefully some of the breeders will come on and help you out.

| When I first started my search for yorkies 4 years ago, I had a show breeder who had agreed to mentor me and sell me a pup on a co-ownership contract. I really liked the idea and knew I was interested in showing. I eventually decided not to go with her as she had no health contract other than 48 hours to get her checked at the vet. Her dogs were beautiful. But when I questioned that, she said she had nothing in her lines so no reason to give a guarantee. In my mind, if there was nothing in the lines then no reason not too. I just didn't feel comfortable. And then she told me her champion who came from a long line of champions and many show breeders I daresay would recognize the name, had grade 3 luxating patellas but it was nothing to worry about. She was very nice and I really didn't feel like she was trying to rip me off but I wasn't willing to spend $2500 on a risk like that. I guess I'm just telling my story as sometimes it does happen..... |

So do your homework, check many references, and check out other reputable breeders. Good luck on your search. | |

| I would be very surprised if a YTCA member or any ethical breeder refused to replaced or fund in the case of a serious genetic problem like liver shunt, LeggCalvePerthes, etc.. found within the first year or so...guarantee or no guarantee.. |

| The puppy is five months old. The more I think about it, the more uneasy I feel about it. I think I need to contact her and cancel my visit. |

| Experience should have nothing to do with the fact of HOW one prepares for breeding. Whether or not nothing has shown up in ones lines, the proper health testing, screening, STD testing, BAT, ect. should always be done. It is a bit costly but having the assurance of a great bill of health in producing healthy puppies is worth it! A 48 hour health guarantee is not a health guarantee, what is going to show up in 48 hours? Even a through vet exam can't provide much piece of mind in 48 hours. As Rose has already stated, reputable breeders will stand behind their puppies guarantee or not! If you are having mixed feelings, look elsewhere. Great that you are doing your homework. Good luck in your search!
