| Hello & a couple of questions Hello all - I have posted a couple of times only - mostly about my little lost guy. I was sent here as a recommendation as a resource to find someone who was a reputable breeder. And after contacting a couple of people and asking all of the recommended questions I have purchased a little girl from Sandra at SanJenn's. She will be here 2 weeks from tonight and we are so excited - and nervous. I have had dogs all my life and one prior yorkie - but it I haven't had a puppy since 1986. I hope the potty training goes well!!! At any rate - I would like to get some information on how you folks handle a couple of things with your Yorkie babies: 1. How do you clean their teeth and how often. I had my Matty's teeth cleaned every year at the vet but I have promised myself to be more faithful with household teeth cleaning on my new puppy. Do you brush their little teeth daily. My vet recommended at least weekly but I would think it might be easier for it to be just a daily routine - you know - get up, potty, play, eat, wash little mouths and eyes and brush the teeth. Does anyone here do daily tooth care? 2. When you crate train at night - can you move the crate to the room you sleep in? We have a 2 story house and I don't want to leave the little thing downstairs - I won't hear if she needs to go out at night that way. Plus I think she would be more comforted if the crate were in our bedroom. Though it may not be a popular practice here, once our babies our potty trained they sleep with us. So would it be alright for me to take the crate upstairs at night - or buy a 2nd one? 3. I want to try a version of the 7 day potty training routine. But I am not willing to have my baby shut up that much. I plan on crating in am and in the afternoon but I would like her to be with her family after supper until bed time - not sitting in a crate. I would keep her on a hard surface and watch her like a hawk for signs of toileting. Do you think this will work? I appreciate any advice you might give. I want to give this little girl a happy, healthy life and I believe a well trained dog is much more happy and content. Thanks, Lynn |

| I just wanted to say on this forum, you will find many of us sleep with our yorkie babies. I see no problem with taking her crate with you to your room so you can hear her. You might even just get one crate for downstairs, one for upstairs?. I am sure you will get tons of other, probably more helpful responses, just wanted to say welcome and congrats on the new baby!

| Thank you so much. I am so grateful to have a place to connect with other Yorkie owners. Or should I say - other people owned by Yorkies which seems much more accurate. |

| I always to the crate in the bedroom, was no problem.. when i woke up sometimes he was still sleeping.. potty training is best to take her out after she sleeps. so pick her up and put her outside or on the potty pad.. and after playing and before dinner. good luck |

| When we first brought Ruby home, she slept in her crate in our bedroom. Now that she's mostly potty trained, she sleeps in our bed. I try to brush her teeth 2-3 times a week. Other members will have lots of information to add. Congrats on your new furbaby, be sure to post pictures!

| First of all congrats on your new little furbaby!! I can't wait to see your pictures!! I'm pretty new to taking care of a yorkie puppy as well, I got mine a little under 3 weeks ago but so far this site has helped tremendously and Oliver is doing so well! I bought teeth cleaning supplies at Petsmart (they're little pads you put on your finger and you can rub some of the paste on it and brush inside their mouths). My vet told me to get in the habit of doing it weekly and its not bad to do it 3 or 4 times a week. She said even thought their baby teeth will fall out, it still gets them used to the process and is good prevention for their adult teeth. As for crate training, my little guy sleeps in my room with me. He's so tiny that I don't let him sleep all night in the bed as he's not quite fully potty trained and he may get hurt if he were to fall off the bed (but when he's older he will sleep with me!) I'm probably not the best parent haha has I sleep with the cage right next to me on the nightstand since he cries if he's away from me. I just can't bear to hear him cry and I enjoy waking up to him Best of luck with your little one!! Can't wait to hear updates!! |

| Thank you all for your responses and good wishes. I am glad that taking the crate upstairs seems to be an option. I am excited to see my little girl - albeit am a somewhat nervous mommy. It is silly - I have had dogs all my life. But Yorkies are so tiny and well let's face it - special. I will post pictures when I get her. Thanks again. |

| Do you have a baby gate for the stairs? Be careful and watch your pup around that.

| I would never let her run loose upstairs - ever. She will be crated and when we get up she will come downstairs. I do have gates for downstairs but as little as she will be I wouldn't take a chance with her falling down the stairs. But thank you for the concern and bringing it up just in case. |
