| New to the site Hello all, I am new to this site as well as being a new mommy to a baby toy yorkie. I have to admit I was not at all prepared for what it takes to have one of the puppies. i got my new puppy (Dollar) this past Saturday andhe had a couple of seizures so i took him to the emergency hospital and 700 dollars later he came back home. He seems to be fine noe but he is dry heaving a lot. Could this be Kennel cough? He is going to the vet today. Also, i am very nervous now about having one...can someone please ease my fears about being a new mommy. And I have a feeding schedlue given to me by the person that i bought him from, but does anyone have any suggestions on how often or what to give him so he doesnt become hypoglycemic? Please help ...thank you

| Welcome to YT. I am so sorry to hear about your baby. Hopefully the vet will have some good news for youl and your baby will be as good as new asap. I also have a larger Yorkie at 6.5 lbs so I have never had any concerns regarding the Hypoglycemia. I know you can buy Nutri-cal at your local pet store and it should help if that really is the issue. I know tinys need to have food and water often to avoid this problem to prevent their sugar level from getting too low. Yes, it can be overwhelming in the beginning but it does get better. Hang in there. I sure there are lots of people on this site who can further help you.

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk, I am so sorry your little one had a seizure and I know all about the vet bills associated with them , My Gracie who will be 2 in May had this problem when she was 12 weeks old. These little guys can really hurt the wallet if problems arise and require ALOT of attention. My little Gracie is my best friend and I am there for her for whatever is required (and even when i'ts not . It does sound promising that they allowed your baby to come home with you after being stabilized. Gracie was required to stay at the emergency vet overnight for further observation and IV meds(valium, etc), and then back to my vet the next day (to defer some of the cost). She had a bile acid test to rule out liver shunt and then went back to the emergency vet the next day for a CT scan of head and abdomin. They finally concluded she must have ingested something that cause the seizure. We had been battling ants and used a liquid product that you place on little pieces of cardboard(it's sweet and attracts the ants). We feel that maybe a piece of cardboard may have fallen off the counter and she licked it up. This is only speculation. She was at that time gated off in one room only with NOTHING remotely toxic in the room, but was allowed in the kitchen when we were in there. Who knows??? I was so glad it was not a liver shunt, and that no brain issue was present. She was on anticonvulsant liquid medication for a while and has NEVER had a seiqure since that horrible day in August, 2004. My prayers are with you and hopefully all of this will resolve itself and your baby will be fine. Please keep us updated. _____________________________________ Gracie, Boodah and Dianne |

| Also, you said your baby was dry heaving. Is this constant? Please let us know more. It can be so overwhelming at first with these little munchkins and I know how frightened that you must be. I have NEVER gotten over that Seizure episode (my vet, and all vets at the emergency center did not hold much hope). But I DID!!!!!! I kept that baby in my arms and talked gently to her and hovered over her for months. I kept telling her she was "safe". Do you know to this day every time I tell her she is "safe", she curls up next to me and becomes so peaceful. Please use this site as a resource for advice, comfort and joy. We all know that sometimes awful things happen that are completely out of our control with our little ones. Accidents happen, they get sick, sometimes gravely ill, and with all living things, eventually they will pass on. All we can do is love them with all our heart, and watch out for them as best we can. |

| Oh, and one last thing........I never hestitate to call my vet with questions, day or night..........With 2 Yorkies, 2 cats(we just had to put oneto sleep) and a bunch of beagle rabbit dogs I figure I help keep a roof over his head and even if I did not have all these animals, if he is a GOOD vet, he will never mind the calls. If he does, switch vets!! |
