Bathing puppies

Quick question! I really want to bathe my little guy (he's 10 weeks today) but I was wondering what the easiest way to bathe them was? Should I just use a wet face cloth with a little shampoo making sure I rinse him well or should I put him in a little basin? Also, do you just dry them with a towel or use a blow dryer on low (no heat)??

Also, (last question I promise!) how often do you bathe your pup? I want him to look clean and fluffy but I don't want to dry his coat out. Thanks for all your help!!!

I don't know if it's too early or not, but I would think the easiest way to wash a little guy would be in the sink with a cup. Fill up the sink a couple inches and use the cup to pour the water on him. Just make sure to have everything you need before the bath so you have no need to walk away from the sink... this would be dangerous as he could possibly jump out.

I wash my two about once a week or week and a half. Right now they have their hair longer, so they require more bathing. Some people on here bathe less to avoid dry skin, but this has not been an issue with my two.

Oh ok thanks!! Do you towel dry them or blow dry them? Your pups have long hair so I would imagine it would be different anyway. Thanks again!

I towel dry and then use my blow dryer on low heat. I find that they look cleaner when I blow dry them than when I just let them air dry

That's fine if you want to bathe him. I have 3 babies right now and I usually put all 3 in the tub at once. I use baby shampoo on them and conditioner. I usually dry them first with a towel and then blow dry them. Hope that helps.

I always feel so mean giving them their first few baths. They look at me like I'm doing something really cruel but they forgive me as soon as I pull them out and dry them off and at first they are afraid of the hair dryer but then they decide that it feels good and they just will lay there as if to say, ahhhhh.

You can bathe them after their first inocculations. Between 8 and 9 weeks. Bathe with a good puppy shampoo such Bio Groom Fluffy Puppy; it's soapless shampoo. You brush them while you blow dry them. I'm sure that you have been clipping their little nails and trimming their ears and butts. Once you begin the grooming process it should be done on a weekly basis. To keep them clean and of course to get them use to the grooming process.

I've been trimming his nails like the vet showed me how to but I'm nervous about trimming his ears (didn't know I needed to trim his butt haha)...this is my first yorkie so any information is much appreciated!!

Just a couple suggestions,
I put a bit of cotton batten in their ears, before I bath them.
Also, I have a double sink, so I set them in one, and scoop water out of the other.

When we first got Callie we bathed her in the sink and used a cup but as she got bigger we had to switch to the bath tub and I bought one of those sprayer things because it makes it soooooooo much easier.On blow drying it depends on how much hair she has and what the temp. outside is like in winter I always blow dry her but in the summer I normally let her walk around and air dry. I bathe her once a week normally which also includes brushing her teeth, using oravet on her teeth and checking her skin (she has allergies). I have recently read that baby shampoo is not good for doggies skin and human shampoo is also not good for there skin so make sure you get a nice doggie shampoo, I use pethead and have for over a year and I love it.

Using baby manicure scissors have someone hold your pup for you, with their little butt toward you. Hold the tail up and gently clip around the anus.

Go to this web site. It teaches you how to properly trim ears. It's very important to keep the hair off the ears to assist them in standing up. Also the foot pads need to be kept free of hair. Otherwise, you'll have them slipping and slidding all over the place. Bad for legs and knees. Buy yourself a Whal Peanut at Sally's Beautify Supply for ear and foot pad trimming.

Buy the way make sure you blow dry and brush. Pups this young should be kept dry and not be allowed to air dry. Besides puppy mats need to be brushed out.
