| coat question again I made a post yesterday asking about different yorkie coats and what type of coat my yorkie is likely to have. Well, I contacted his parents' owners and was informed that his father has a beautiful silky coat that they usually keep long, and his mother has a cottony coat that's harder to keep up with. Does this mean that Yoni could have one or the other? Or will he most likely be a mix of cottony and silky? |

| Yes, he could have either one. By 10-12 weeks I can usually tell that the hair on their paws is a lot thicker with the more cottony coats but I have one of each to compare each other to.... |

| The hair on his paws is quite thick.... well I think it is. Is it possible that he could end up with an in between coat, like a mixture of cottony and silky? |

| The cotton coat on a puppy is generally a bit dull looking and actually "feels" like cotton, whereas the more silky coated puppy will be a bit shinny and softer. When they are in their adult coats, the silkier coat will even feel cool to the touch.

It is possible for a pup to have a modified silk coat. Which a blend of both, but grows much faster than a silk coated dog. A true silk coat grows very slow and feels cool to the touch. Even on a warm day. Cotton coats are warm to the touch. If you lift a silk coated dogs coat up it drop straight and back into place. A cotton coat will tend to be fly away and break and mat easier.

| Actually silk coated are more prone to temperature changes than the soft coated dogs. The coat acts as an insulater. I have a pet girl that is soft coated. I keep her in a short cut, just because of matting tendancies and breakage. Actually as soon as I get that AKC Championship Certificate in the mail....out come the clippers....it's easier on me as well as them. No more wrapping, bathing every 4 days......taking the topknot down twice a day......they can run unemcumbered by coat......

| I have 3 yorkies and they all are different. One is silky and does have a shiny look and cool to the touch. My cotton coat is thick and tends to be poofy looking when long, so I keep her in a short cut. Real cute on her. I just got my third, he is a boy...he is 16 months and has a mixed coat. It is soft to the touch but still parts on the back, it isn't as silky but yet lays flatter than my cotten coat. I like having the 3 differant coats. They all have a different look to them. I hope all this info helps.
