☺Farrah☺ Donating Member | Farrah gets spayed today... Can you share any tips or things I must do to comfort her? What is recovery time? I will ask the vet but I think YTers know better.

| The vet should send you home with pain meds to keep Farrah comfortable. They all vary, some take a couple days of quiet to recoup and others are back to themselves ASAP. Just try to keep her from jumping and running around. Good luck Farrah

| After Rhianna's spay she was pretty much out of it when I picked her up. I brought with me a soft blankie to hold her in. When we got home I placed her in her bed and covered her. She did shake and was stoned for most of the night. She went potty good, but I had to bring her water to her. I kept checking her gums as I was afraid she hadn't eaten anything, but her gums were bright pink and I knew she wasn't having any low blood sugar problems. They recover a lot faster than we would after a surgery like that. About 48 hours she was practically back to herself, although each pup is different. I made sure the next few days after her surgery I was home with her. They make it just fine, so no worries . . .just extra lovin and attention is what makes them bounce back quick!

| Make sure they do blood work prior to her surgery. Also dont forget her pain meds for after her surgery. She will need a couple of days worth. Good Luck to you. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Good luck! Mine usually come home pretty wiped out and mostly sleep. The vet will give you specific instructions as to feeding etc. I found mine would eat a small meal later in the evening. My vet gives then a pain injection before they leave and it is good for 24 hours. Then she sends home pain medicine if needed. I used baby onesies to keep then from fussing with the incisons and it also is nice and soft for them. Usually by the next day the are much better and back to themselves in a day or two. Please keep us posted.

Donating YT 500 Club Member | My experience was pretty much like everyone else - although Bridget was ravinous when she was finally "awake and with it" which surprised me as she had 9 baby teeth pulled also. The only other thing was that I had an old sweatshirt that I wore around the house the day before and let her sleep on it the night before she went in and then took it with me when I took her in - and asked them to put it in with her so that when she woke she would smell a familiar scent. I don't know if that helped her - but it helped me to think that it might help. Keeping her calm after she was feeling better was the hardest part. As someone said to me the pain meds are a double edged sword...it makes them feel better so they don't realize that they shouldn't be running and jumping yet. But most importantly (I think) is like Manolo's mom said "do the blood work". Bridget had laser surgery with self dissolving stitches - I did put a soft e-collar on her but after the 1st or second day - she never messed with her incision. But the onesie sounds like a great idea. Good luck - prayers and thoughts are with you and Farrah - for her speedy recovery and for your nerves - and as I tell everyone - a glass of wine won't hurt....it may not comfort her - but it will calm your nerves, and a calm mom makes for a calm baby! (I can justify anything!)

| I made the mistake of not bathing Brandi before her spay and boy did she stink by the time I was able to give her bath. I think it was about 10 days or something like that. It was okay to use moist wipes but no water for bathing....just keep that in mind. I can give Brandi a bath one day and by the next day you would think she was homeless especially if I don't brush her everyday. Last edited by yavenay; 06-08-2010 at 09:36 AM. |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | OMG - so sorry to laugh (I'm at work and had to laugh right out loud) - but that describes Bridget to a tee!! Her hair gets all greasy looking and has the worst "bed-head" ever!

| She'll be fine. She'll just be very sore and groggy tonight. Just make sure she doesn't have but a few bites of food and a little bit of water, then she should be able to eat fine the next day. Keep her from jumping, running for a few days. After that she should be mostly back to normal.

You know I've had cats my whole life and Brandi is the first dog I've ever had. I've never thought animals could get bed-head until I got Brandi. You can tell when she just woke up....her hair is all over the place. | |

☺Farrah☺ Donating Member | Just called the vet and they said she did good and is resting comfortably...whew! Thank you for all the well wishes and great information. I am going to pick her up at 6:30 tonight. They wanted to keep her til tomorrow but the breeder suggested I get her tonight and told me to feed her some baby food mixed with a little warm water (if she takes it) around 8-9pm tonight. Another question, I usually carry her to the x-pen in the yard because we have a good size yard and foxes, possums and raccoons share it. How can I carry her to do her business?

| I'm so glad everything went well. Just keep her in a quite place for a couple of days. She will be fine. Remember, this is equivalent to a Hysterectomy |
