| When to leave alone? I have a four month old morkie. I have had him about six weeks. I have been pretty lucky in that my boss is an animal lover and lets me bring him to work with me. My question is is that I am concerned that if I dont start leaving him alone that he will never get used to it. The few times that we have left him home in his pen, he just tore everything up. The wee wee pad was shredded, the food and water were all over the place, etc. He is very good about sleeping in his crate at night and now he is at the point where he can go from about 10:30 p.m. to anywhere between 4 & 6 am in the morning. I dont know if he is too young to leave at home during the day in his crate. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |

| If your pup is sleeping in his crate at night, I would not keep him there during the day. No dog should be kept in a crate for 8 hours or more during the day. I would stick with the xpen or gate off a safe, easy to clean room in your home. For the potty pads, try a pad holder (available at pet stores, Walmart, and online), or try washable pads (if you use these, be sure to spray with the dog attracting scent also available at pet stores). Provide plenty of safe toys, and maybe turn on some relaxing music or the tv to distract your pup. Your pup will settle into the routine in time. |

| Thank you for your response. I did use the pad holder but that ended up getting pushed around and flipped...lol...I guess Im just worried that I am spoiling him (which I love to do) by taking him to work with me everyday that when I do have to leave him that it will be too upsetting & stressing for him. Thanks again! Kelly |

| If you have the option to take your little one to work with you, that is wonderful and there is no reason, he HAS to stay home all the time... if you want to keep him home that is a different story. However, your pup should learn some level of independence. You could leave him home in the morning for example, and then go get him at lunch... or leave him at home while you do other things at night, or on the weekends. Since he is so used to being with you and being destructive when you are gone, you should slowly work up the time he is left alone and I agree with maximo on the crate issue. Good Luck!

Armani Man makes a great suggestion of starting out with short periods of separation and gradually increasing the length of time. Frankly, I wish that I had given my Max more independence and made him spend more time alone. Instead, he is always with me or his grandpa. At most, he spends a grand total of 2 hours alone with his brother, sometimes. He is such a good boy, and it's difficult to explain, but I think some independence is essential. | |

| We got Joey when he was 12 weeks old, and he has been left at home alone about 8 hours per day since that age. Now, he is my little one with severe separation anxiety, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it. We got Tank when he was 17 weeks old, and he has been alone 8 hours per day since that age, and he has no separation anxiety. They both have been all over the place, are well socialized, and do great with other animals and children, but Joey's anxiety is a bit overwhelming. I wish you luck with your decision!!!!

| when you go away to the satore,.for let's say 10 min and come back get him out of his crate and praise him .. Also pretend you leave the house and wait and when its quiet for 10 min or som. go in and praise him. You can build this up for about 15 min and then 20 min.. 30 min. i would also give him a chew stick to keep busy... so its a good positive experience for him. I wouldn't get him in a crate for hours during the day, because thats sad. A dog needs to have the ability to walk around etc. Why should have a doggy in the first place When i trained Snickers he was such a good boy,. and was tunning to his crate if i needed to leave the house. He was run ing and waiting for his chewstick, and just very good. Thats how i teach him.. they are pretty smart... so should be working. good luck |

| Thank you everyone. Calvin is very well socialized but he hates being alone. Like I said he is great all night in his crate but when it comes to his pen he is like a crazy dog. Last night we left him for a couple of hours to go to our sons band concert and when we came home his pen was a disaster. Food all over the place, he had used his wee wee pad and stepped in it and that was all over the place. I can just picture him jumping all over the place while we are gone trying to get out. He is so used to being with me. Kelly |
