| Taking my puppy for visits??? My puppy is very tiny~1.1 pound. I have had him for two weeks and he is twelve weeks old. He is eating pretty well now. My question is when can I take him places? Not alot of places just like visits to my mom when I go visit her. I never leave him alone or take my eyes off him and I am dying to get out of the house! What does anyone recommend? I don't want to stress him out, so I'm worried.

| I don't think you should take the baby anywhere until all shots are given. I know it is hard, but it's important for your babies health. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | at that age and that size i wouldn't take him anywhere except the vets office for his puppy check ups and vaccines. He is way too small to be exposed to anything else in my opinion. I would wait until he has all his puppy boosters before taking him anywhere else.

| I wouldn't take him out anywhere until 7-10 days AFTER his last set of shots, to insure the immunity has built up completely. My vet said the last set of shots are really the ones that have the most effectiveness and are the most imporant. The earlier ones have variable efficacy depending on the immunity passed on by the mother etc... |

| Okay...you guys are right. So we are just worried about shots? After that as long as he is with me and not around many people he shouldn't be too stressed? The reason also is I might have to start taking him to work in a couple of weeks because I won't have anyone to watch him. He would be in my office in his crate. Should I do this or try to find a doggie babysitter. There is one near where I work but I don't know if I want him around any other dogs or strange people. Do you think he would be better in a strange place as long as he is with me? Thanks guys!

| Some folks take general rules very strictly... If your mom doesn't have dogs (or at the very least, she has them and their shots are up to date), and has a private yard, then going for a visit to see "Grandma" wouldn't be a problem. The problem is having an unprotected pup (vaccine-wise) being exposed to possible disease. Even just walking down the street, sniffing where other dogs have been, is sufficient to get them sick. The waiting another 7-10 days after the last set of shots is to ensure that they've had time to take effect and the pup has achieved sufficient immunity to fight off disease. Puppies are babies in every sense of the word and need protection from the big, bad, germy world out there. |

Carry him to and from the car... don't let his feet touch the ground till you are in your Mom's house. It may seem like a pain now, but preventing disease when you can is so much easier for all involved than treating it.
