| climbing puppy help I have a 10 week old 1 lb 14oz puppy Chloe that I swear is part squirrel. When I bought her home within 2 days she could climbed out of the 2 1/2 foot high 8 x 8 metal pen her breeder suggested. I went to Pet Smart and purchased the cover so now she can't out that. It is big and so cry so much when not in the room with me and she still climbs to the top until she falls down. so next I tried a mesh playpen and she climbed out of that to. She climbs up my husband pant leg to the couch when she wants up to I'm so worried I don't want her to do this because I have hardwood floors and she can break a bone when she falls. I have baby gate up to keep her in the room with me but when I left to use the bathroom thinking she'd be safe I walked back in to see her on the top of the chair yeek! She also like to climb up high when I'm holding her and I have to keep pulling her down any advise please! |

| wow she is a cutie! I don't really have any personal experience in this. Precious loves to scout around and see what she can find on the floor. She's not really figured out there's a "higher level" of living yet. When we DO put her on the couch she won't jump off she's too chicken. Maybe you can try sitting on the floor playing with her, working w/her when it comes to treats on the floor so she associates being "down" with good things.... I really have no idea but it's worth a shot. Sounds like you have a sweet baby who wants mom and dads love

| Take her with you to the bathroom? Also, if she's climbing a pant leg to get up, there is a person in those pants that can correct her behavior. If you can't watch her like a hawk, don't leave her out of her pen. I have heard people put plexie glass on the sides of the pen so that little climbers can't climb and hurt themselves. She probably just misses her mom and litter mates and is looking for comfort. There is a stuffed animal that is like a hot water bottle and has a heartbeat. It is used to keep puppies company.

| I work from home but so far I'm not getting any work done lol my day is spent on the floor with her playing and she is not happy unless I'm down their with her. We do tell her down when she climbs. She goes in the bathroom with me even when I take my shower and she cries until I get out. She also has lot of stuffed animals and I have a 9 year old little boy Maltese cutie named Casey who she's biting in the face all the time to get him to play but so far he has no interest in the little stinker. I will try the plastic glass sides I'm just worried for her safety because she also chews on everything even me. It been a long time since I had a puppy in the house and this is my first Yorkie my Maltese who is 7 pounds can't jump up on anything. |

Instead of down, try a different type of correction. I use a double clap (it distracts my pup from his naughty act) followed by a firm "No." No yelling, just a firm "No." For biting, if she bites you, do what your maltese does, don't engage her. In other words don't encourage the biting. The stuffed animal I suggested is different. It's suppose to be "live" company for them, but there is another dog in the house, so I wouldn't spend my money on something like that.

| I've had her for one week now. She is sweet and very loving most of the time but doesn't like to be out of my sight or confined even when she with Casey. Her breeder said to put washer into a plastic tub and shake it once to make a loud sound when she goes by the electric cords to chew and other things she is not suppose to have. I've puppy proofed everything I can but I do area rugs that must taste good and the wood on my furniture legs. I've tried shaking the tub and she runs away looking afraid and I don't want her afraid of me. I also use the bitter spray which I have to take with me everywhere because it wear off for her For the biting I tried making a yeek sound like another dog would do and offering her a chew bone. Sometime she jumps right into my face and bites me and my husband and catches us off guard and she bites like crazy when she wants down. I don't want her to be a biter I've also walked away from her so far is hasn't work but I'll keep doing that and hope she catches on that it is not acceptable behavior. My Maltese's are older so it's been a longtime since I had a baby dog in the house. I had two Maltese the other one Holly passed away at 16 a few weeks ago. thank you for the advise I'm willing to try whatever it takes to have a happy safe puppy. |

When I'm home or one of my brothers are, Kaji behaves. He's an angel because he knows we implement the rules that he knows how to follow. As soon as he is alone with my parents, all bets are out the window. He throws tantrums sometimes, climbs up to my mom's desk, shamelessly begs for food, and other naughty things. Everyone in my household has been taught the correction he knows and knows the rules. My parents don't follow the rules, and Kaji knows that. They are inconsistent and Kaji's smart enough to know when to take advantage of that. I really need to get on to find a post one of the more knowledgeable breeders made. It explains puppy development and what mom teaches at what age.

| You will never be able to train her not to climb out of pens or fencing..a climber, climbs forever unless they gain too much weight. I have had a few...all you can do is make her life as safe as possible. Use pens with a top. I never had any luck teaching them not to climb on furniture and jump off...maybe I am hopeless at training, but I have done everything..now I make them safe. Some got well behaved when I was in the room, but once I left, my husband said they did as they pleased. My friend had a male, Mickey who used to climb her 6 ft privacy fence..that is how I met Shirley...Mickey climbed out and a neighbor found him...knew I had Yorkies and thought he was mine...neighbor puts Mickey over my fence with my 4..I looked outside and counted FIVE...what a day we had..LOL I went door to door until I found Shirley...another crazy Yorkie person 1/2 block away... |
