| Newbie needs help! Hi everyone! I'm brand new to this site and have a lot of questions. My husband and I are looking to buy/adopt a male teacup yorkie. We have no idea where to look for a legit seller/breeder. Just this morning we went thru a scam where a woman said she would send us a teacup yorkie for only the transportation fees, and that we send the money to Cameroon, Africa. She claimed to be from Baltimore, MD. Thankfully the Western Union employee warned us about pet scams and fraud from Africa before we sent the money. She may or may not have been a scam, but in the end we were VERY uncomfortable with the situation and decided not to pursue that puppy any longer. So I guess my first question would be, does anyone know of a legit person who we could adopt/purchase a MALE teacup yorkie puppy from? We aren't looking to spend a lot of money, I saw that some puppies online go for thousands of dollars. We are looking to spend much less than that. And also, we live in Fairbanks, Alaska where my husband is stationed so more than likely we would need to have the puppy shipped to us, unless there is a breeder in the state (I looked for hours online and couldn't find anyone locally to me). If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated. My husband and I absolutely love this type of animal and really wish to have one of our own. Thanks!! |

| Welcome to YT. Yes it sounds like you were about to be scammed. It's a good thing you were told about it. One thing I wanted to tell you is that there is no such thing as a teacup. People use that term to try and get more money out of you. We like to call our littlest ones tiny. My Bailey is very tiny but I worry so much about her safety. She could get stepped on or she could get hurt jumping off of something. You really are on your guard when you have a tiny one around. I am sorry I can't help you on Breaders in AK but I am sure there will be someone here that can. Good luck in your search for your new baby. Again Welcome to YT.

| The Cameroon, Africa is definately a scammer...they are out there big time and many people are falling victim to them. I would like to start off by saying that a "teacup" is not a term that is used here. Yorkies come in all sizes ...from tiny little 2 pounders to bigger 10-15 pounders. The smaller you get in size the bigger issues you may run into generally speaking. There are exceptions to that rule. The tiny ones have to have round the clock care, so if you cannot be with the baby ALL the time you must have someone to care for them. You have to be able to get up at all hours to make sure the pup has eaten. Alot of heartache in the making. Most reputable breeders would not ship a baby that was going to be that tiny. Have you ever owned a small breed dog? Do you have children? How small are you looking for? What is your income? How much do you think it costs to own a toy breed dog? These are just a few questions that a reputable breeder would ask and a person to person is the best way. Please check into the breeder and make sure you check here first once you find a breeder. There are many brokers/puppy mills/ BYB that will sell you a tiny baby that has Liver shunt issues (hence being so tiny) and will end in alot of money in vet bills for you. This is all being said in hopes for you to make an informed decision about a healthy pup instead of a tiny sickly one. |

| Forgot to say: WELCOME to YT!!! Coming here to ask is a great first step in owning your new baby... Even if you find a breeder here....check with others....you have to have a great feeling..you are not just buying a puppy you are also buying the breeder(from a great person on here) |

| I am so glad that you were not caught up in that scam . It has been going around for yrs. It is better to find a repuatble breeder , that will sell you a healthy pup , then a tiny little one. WIth yorkie's size can matter . Please keep that in mind. Breeders can't determine always what size a baby will grow into . haveing a healthy dog , that won't cost you thousands in medical care is better , then anything in this world. Good luck in your search .

| Thanks for all of the advice so far. I have heard that the smaller yorkies are prone to health issues and thats definitely not something I'd want to go through. Does anyone know an estimated cost of shipping? I'm sure that different companies have different prices, but just a general idea? The puppy would be shipped to interior Alaska where we live. |

| there is a yorkies for sale/wanted section in this forum, maybe post in there and see what responses you get? this is a great community to find pups in when you ask others for feedback they let you know if the breeder you are working with is reputable & share their own experiences. i think the prices seem to be around the 1000-1500 mark for a akc/ckc (ckc I mean, the canadian club) registered yorkie. generally, the breed standard is not to exceed 7 pounds. both of mine are in the 4-5 pound range and they sure seem tiny, especially compared to my cats! best of luck in your search

| okay i did a little hunting (shhhh...I'm at work): there is a site called breeders.net where you can type in your zip code & it will show you breeders in your area. also, i found a site called exceptionalyorkies.com located in Palmer, AK. There is a little girl posted under their 'available' section whelped in April '08, 4 and a half pounds, $600.00. I don't know of this site or breeder so i'm not making a recommendation, but it could be worth looking into, either for the girl pup they have posted or to see if they have any upcoming litters. the breeder i use locally (I live on vancouver island) has a cute little boy pup available now, its too bad you are so far away! best of luck (again!)....sighhhhh.....back to work I go....

| Looks like you got a lot of good advice here. Just wanted to say hi! When we 1st started looking for a Yorkie, I wanted a tiny little girl. The litter I was waiting on didn't produce any girls, so we took the cutest boy. Well, he's now a hefty 6lb. powerhouse, but I'm so glad he is. We've never been troubled by hypoglycemia or feeding issues. Also, Kimbo sleeps with us and it would be too nerve racking if he weighed 2 or 3 lbs. That being said, if he would have turned out to be teeny tiny, I would have loved him the same. I just think I would have been a lot more worried.

| Welcome to YT! I would suggest that before you actively try to acquire a Yorkie, you take the time to do some serious research and educating yourself on the breed. It will only better prepare you and help you make a more informed decision in the long run. It will help you avoid being scammed again and arm you with vital info, such as the negative connotations associated with the term "teacup." If you are only willing to spend a small amount, then checking with rescues and shelters is likely going to be your best option. Breeders have lots of costs they have to cover, so naturally, a pup from a reputable breeder would be considerably more. Best of luck. I'm sure you'll find a cute fur butt soon. |
