| Walking dogs without a leash on busy street Why do people do this? I just drove home and saw this guy walking his little dog on a busy street with no leash and i was so scared when i turned the corner he would dart out and i would hit him. I just do not understand why they do this as they can dart across road or another dog not on a leash could attack this little dog ok i feel better i vented as i wanted to yell out Please put a leash on your dog |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I know there are several people in my subdivision that let their dogs, big and small out in front of their houses with no leash. Just yesterday, I slammed on my brakes when I saw a little white bichon type dog right at the curb by the mail box. I looked over and saw the owner back by the garage. I would never trust any of my dogs to not see a rabbit or something and run after it.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | Doesn't it amaze you that some people have absolutely zip on the way of common sense? I'm in a subdivision with tons of dogs. One of my neighbors let's his German Shepard run all over the place. I can't count the number of times I've found him in my garage. Another neighbor let's their 4 boxers roam. There are also lots of teenaged drivers in our neighborhood...it's an accident or dog fight waiting to happen. |

| A neighbor friend of mine calls it " Poor Dog Management" and when he sees someone doing something like that, he leaves a note on their postbox stating that they have been sited by the " Associate Inspector of PDM" ! He's too funny ....Just love him! |

| And why is it that these people have children as well? I don't think it matters how well animals and children are 'trained', I would never take any chances.

| I agree with you ladies to a point...I definitely do not walk Harley on busy streets without a leash. However, she is trained so well, that I can let her off leash in the front yard and she never bolts. If another dog, cat or even squirrel approaches the yard, she just runs back to me. We do occasionally take a night walk and my husband and I allow her off leash for these...but she's always walking right between us, never falls back or runs ahead. She'll just stay in the middle. If we stop, she stops. I would never put her in a situation where I thought she would be hurt.

| That's terrible. I would never let Jackson off leash near a busy road; I have let him off in our yard... but our situation is different. We're not in a neighborhood, we live on 3 acres and behind us is 90 acres of farmland behind us. Even with that though, I'd never let him off without watching him. I don't fully trust him right now so he's been on a 50 foot leash for a few months now working on recall, etc.

| It really bugs me too. I don't understand why people would do it on any street either to be honest. You just never know what is going to peak their attention - it may be something you've never come across before and then it could be too late.

I just think it is always safer having them on a leash since they are so small. We have hawks, owls and coyotes here and people have let their dogs outside to go potty and a coyote grabbed them and jumped over the fence as the coyotes know by the poop in yard and sense where dogs are and lie in wait for them when an owner lets them outside. Just be careful as they are so little things can happen fast even right in front of you There was a party here with 50 people and a owl swooped down and took the owners maltese in front of 50 people. You can never be too careful with a toy breed in my opinion. Last edited by dwerten; 05-20-2010 at 09:41 AM. | |

More on topic - You would think the fact that most places have leash laws would cut down on this too.

| also on the news here a lady was walking 3 shih tzus on leashes at noon around a busy neighborhood and 2 coyotes came out of no where and went after her and her three dogs so luckily she pulled her dogs by the leash behind a iron gate at someones home that was not locked and saved her dogs lives. Had they not been on a leash she would have lost one of those dogs if not more. |
