I'm so grossed out. I just found a tick on Troy. I've never seen one before. The time of year got away from me and I forgot that it's bug season. Got some frontline right away.

Has any one else Experienced this? I picked it off with tweezers and flushed it down the toilet. I know should have kept it just in caSE there were complications . I'll keep a close eye on him for sickness problems.

I think if you got it off in time, you should be fine! I have pulled 2 ticks off of Fiona, and she is fine. Usually, if they have lymes disease the first sign is lameness in the hind legs, some dogs will test positive or lymes, and never show symptoms. Usually when your dog is 6 months old, is when they will test for heartworm and lyme disease. If they show positve they usually are put on a course of doxycycline for 2 weeks, and they will continue to show postive for about 2 years. I'm not happy with my vet, since Fiona is now 2 years old and has never been tested for this, however, I will make sure she gets one at her next vet vist. Just watch the area where you pulled the tick off- sometimes the head can stay in the skin, and it will eventually work it's way out.

I agree.. 9 times out of 10 a tick won't hurt the dog if you get it off in time. Just watch the spot where you took it off for a few days and it'll be ok!

That is gross and would freak me out too. I think your doing the right thing, just what closely.

I am a bit concerned with using any of those Frontline type products since there have been reports of neurological problems. So, don't know what I will do this year.

i feel your pain, we came back from a walk and found a tick on my husband which i had to pull off. funny thing there were no ticks on the dogs!

Frontline will not protect from lyme disease. It just kills after a bite. If you feel that its possible she can pick up more in the future talk to your vet about a lyme vaccine.

I've already had to pull two ticks off Chloe this month, namely because I wasn't aware that Advantage was only for fleas...oops! With both, I put a little dab of Neosporin on the spot (both ticks were on her head so she couldn't reach to lick) and have kept an eye on them. No problems so far. And Chloe has been given the Lymes vaccine because we have a lot of deer in our area.

As a child, I got Lymes and my mom caught it very early because the area around the bite formed what looked distinctively like a bull's eye (red center, pale circle, red outer circle). I'm not sure if the same thing happens with dogs or not though. Also, Lymes comes from deer ticks which have a white dot on their backs, so if the tick didn't have the dot you won't have to be concerned about that particular problem.

I believe it was a brown dog tick. When I researched them that was the one it most closely resembled. Basically it was the same color as troys inner ear.

Jackson had probably 10-15 ticks last summer. He was on Frontline but it didn't seem to matter. We switched to K9 Advantix and haven't got any, except one a few days ago (we were late on the Advantix tho... oops!) He tested positive for Lymes back in late December when he began limping and holding his back hind leg. I'm sure it was a tick from the beginning of last summer that he got, the vet said it can take months to show up. He got put on a 30 day antibiotic and he's good now. Maryland is really tick infested.

I was wondering what was a good preventative for ticks...the Advantage was just given to me and I used my last dosage this month so I'm shopping for something different. Will definitely look at the Advantix...ticks are awful here in Oklahoma as well. Especially near our house...we've got a large field near by and our danged next door neighbor feeds the deer. Totally does not help the situation!!

Ugh! I found a tick on Mickey last month too! Totally grossed and freaked me out! I think I have a tick phobia! But I thought I would pass on that yes, your dog can still get a tick if they are on advantage or frontline etc. And they can also still get Lyme disease even if they have had the shot! I now belong to a tick borne disease group and someone on there recommends spraying the yard with Ivory dish soap. It's supposed to be pretty effective but I haven't tried it yet myself. Of course, that only helps in your own yard. I also read that there is a micro fiber towel that you can use and if you go over your dog with that right after your walk, it's supposed to trap the bugs in it. Some people are going to try just getting any micro fiber towel and they'll post if it work, I might try that too!

Where I live we tend to have a tick problem so I had the vet give Callie the lyme vaccine. Frontline doesn't work for us so we tried Advantix and it works good most of the time sometimes though its not so good on the fourth week but my vet said its ok to treat them after three weeks. My grandpa treated the yard with a bug killer that is safe for Callie after it dries and we didnt have to treat her every three weeks, we where able to wait the four weeks. The yard hasn't been treated yet this year and last week was bad almost two ticks a day so I had to treat her a little early. Remember to also watch for him scratching it and keep an eye on where the tick was.

All vaccines are not 100% effective but I sure feel better Callie having the shot because it still has a lot of chance of her not getting it then her getting it.
