| Man regrets starting 'designer dogs'/mutts Thought this was interesting since there seems to be an ongoing discussion about combining breeds and calling them 'designer dogs.' FOXNews.com - Labradoodle Pioneer Regrets Fashioning 'Designer Dog'

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | Very interesting - and glad to see he realizes what he did but it was probably only a matter of time before someone else got the idea - I knew he was the one who started the designer dog craze but never knew how long ago this started. It's like the puggle guy - he did the same thing - made millions but he was actually running a puppy mill - I wonder how HE feels |

| I think this man did it for the right reasons and it wasn't based on greed but to help a blind person. Sad where it went from there...

| i feel that it all boils down to what the purpose was for.. for money = wrong but i think he did it for the right reasons.. i mean.. here is a blind man..asking for an easier life so that he wont have to clean up.. (cleaning up probably wouldnt be an easy task for him) and here the labradoodle inventor went out of his way to help him.. but those people making profit deserved to be criticized |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Thanks for the link, how interesting. The labradoodle is often given as example of how some designer breeds really do have a purpose, and I've read many times that there were serious clubs involved in getting the recognized. I think he was trying to develop a lab that didn't shed as much, and this indeed would be a great thing. I believe he did have pure motives when he started doing this, the article saya, "He was the manager of the puppy program at the Royal Institute of the Blind. He received a letter from a woman in Hawaii who needed a seeing eye dog, but her husband had allergies. She wanted a dog that would not shed hair. But now when people ask me, `Did you breed the first one', I have to say, `Yes, I did, but it's not something I'm proud of, I wish I could turn the clock back. I'm not at all proud of my involvement in it. But the genie's out of the bottle, and you can't put it back." I wonder if other mix breeders will learn something from his insight?

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | JMO, I don't think he has anything to be sorry about. His motives were pure. What I don't get is the whole "designer dog" mentality. I guess I'm old enough to remember them being called 'mutts' or "heinz 57 variety" . Most of the time they were the result of somebody getting out of the back yard... To me this whole mix of puppies for profit is just a marketing ploy by bad breeders. Tell someone you've got the 'hottest' new mix and poof...1500 dollars later you have a pet you could have gotten from any pound or rescue. I wonder how many of these breeders have any real knowledge of genetics and what new problems they might be creating. </end rant> Stepping off my soap box now. |
