| Just Yorkie or Mixed breed-Is there a difference? Hello and thanks again to all! This site is just full of so many kind Yorkie owners! Please forgive all my questions, I just want to be informed and make the right decisions!!! My husband just said to me that he heard that mixed breeds tend to be healthier than full breeds!!!??? What!!?? I've never heard that and don't know if its remotely true! Any thoughts? He was looking into Yorkie & Maltese mix and Yorkie-poo mix. Are there any major differences or concerns between these mixes and a full bred Yorkie?? Thanks and have a great day! |

| My feelings towards this is that saying is just an Ol wives tale. Genes are genes and mixed breeds can get health issues just like pure breeds.

| mixes My vet once told me, if you mix a Poodle, Maltese, or anything else and a yorkie, you can have the health problems from both breeds. |

| i have to say,, that in terms of genetics you are opening yourself up to problems from both breeds... the only way i would say a "mix is healthier" is when you are buying from a puppy mill sort of place.... a mix breed would have had less of a chance of being inbred then a pure bred puppy would have been |

| Nope, I wouldn't say mixes are healthier. I have spent over $1,000 on my mix since we got her a little over a year ago - this is just in vet bills. Every dog can have it's problems.

| i would NOT get a mixed breed coz u dont really know what ur getting, at least with a full breed u know the good and bad qualities and u can read up a lot on them, i dont think a mix will be stronger or healthier, as was mentioned above.... its all in the gene's, i would say think twice about it im NOT saying that they are bad, but my question would be... why mix? i think many ppl would agree with "the real thing is better" on the other hand, i cant understand why breeders would mix a yorkie with a maltese or a yorkie with a foxterier or any other toybreed. goodluck on ur decision Mandy |

| Yes, I believe this is true...but only to a point.... The only way a mixed breed has a better chance health wise is if it has lots of breeds mixed in. For example, our Sandy was a stray and has some shepherd, maybe some husky, maybe some lab, maybe some of this and some of that, and God only knows what else mixed in! In this case, I wouldn't have her any other way, she is a BEAUTIFUL dog and very healthy too. I wouldn't think there would be much benefit to only having two breeds mixed together. Like others have said, you just open yourself up to both breeds' problems. But, when you know you want a certain kind of dog, then I would definitely look into the pure bred ones....then, just make sure you do the best you can with a good breeder so you get a healthy one. And, like other posters said, you can really educate yourself on Yorkie health and care and do the best you can to take good care of them. Good luck!!
