| Vacations........what to do? I was just wondering what everyone does with their babies while they go on vacation. Do you bring them with you or do you find someone to stay at the house or do you kennel them? I have never put mine in a kennel and we always bring our dogs with us, but I was wondering how they would do If I got someone to stay at the house with them. Any opinions?

| I just went through all kinds of crap when we went on vacation at the beginning of this month (our first since getting Roxie). First, I had a friend who volunteered to take her for the week at her house. Then, for some unknown reason, she backed out. Then, we were going to board her at the vet, but it just broke my heart to think of her locked in a little cage all day for the week. Finally, after hearing my desperation, my parents decided to take her at their house for the week. Everything went really well. I have no idea what we will do the next time, but it caused us a lot of stress. I know my parents won't take her every time, so I have been researching local boarding services. It's pricier, but I guess it's better than her being locked in a little cage at the vet's.

| I use a service that comes to the house... the lady comes 4 times per day, she will walk them, play with them, feed them, change wee wee pads, etc. She is really great. I call her everyday and she doesnt care They love her. If you are having someone come in make sure: they are bonded and insured; they have permission to take your dog to the vet and know what you would want done.

| being bonded and insured is a good point! Pet smart near us has a doggie hotel where they get there own room and it has ac and set up like a room, doggie bed and even a Tv. They will let your dog play in doggie day care and they will walk your dog 4 x a day. I just don't know about that.... There is someone there 24 hrs. I just don't know how I could leave them.......

| I've known people who housesit / come to visit for a few hours. IMO that's a good idea if you have more than 1 pet and don't mind someone coming over. It can either be a friend or there are services - although I've never tried a service myself. If you have a friend you trust you can also leave the dog there with them. My only concern would be one of money in the case of an emergency vet trip. I would 100% reimburse them for the expenses, but I know that some people don't have the money to begin with so then it becomes a question of leaving emergency money with your friends... which for some reason I am hesitant to do! |

You may also be able to put a CC on file with your vets office for the time you are gone, although I have never done this. In the event that a very serious decision had to be made, they will attempt to contact you first, then they will contact your emergency contact (someone whose number we left them to make such decisions), and I guess if they couldnt find either of those they would just go based on the vets rec.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Last summer was the first time in close to 30 years I went on a vacation and left my dogs. My Dtr is 24 and lives at home and I felt that my DH deserved a vacation as he was very patient with me not ever wanting to leave my babies. They did fine. I also had my nephew or sister come during the day as mine are use to eating around 2 and having someone home all the time. I paid my nephew to spend a couple of hours with them. I of course checked in a couple times a day! lol. We then took 2 mini vacations since and did the same thing. We are leaving for Tucson Saturday for 5 days and will do the same. I am more nervous this time as I have Nikki, the 13-15 year old male I recently took in and he is very attached to me and a terrible eater. I know between my sister, nephew and dtr it should be fine but you can't help worrying. I could not go if I had to board them as it would be so expensive and mine are very attached to the house. I would then opt for someone to come to my house.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | I've used PetSmart Pet Hotel when I had bigger dogs. They were great. I liked that I could board multiple pets in one room so they felt more comfortable. They also have puppy playtimes if you want, though I don't know if I would do that with my little ones.

| Two weeks ago I have to fly from FL to NY (home) due to a death in the family. I found out on a Wed. and had to fly out Thurs (the next day), I was more worried about what I was going to do with Kobe then the kids. DH and I were flying out @ 0630 and I only had hours to figure out what to do with him. I couldn't bring myself to just drop him off at a boarding place that I knew nothing about or have him kenneled at the vets. I ended up leaving him with the same friends we were going to leave the kids with. They have 12 or 13 yr old pitbull and a 2 yr old pomeranian (sp?), he's been to their house before and was terrified of the pom...LOL I sent him with his travel crate bc he likes to sleep in crates when not at home. While i was gone I found out that he snapped @ the husband a few times. Kobe has never snapped at anyone... he mouths when you play with him but a quick no and he stops. We came home that same sunday I couldn't bare to be away from him any longer, come to find out when he was at their house he spent most of the time in his crate. I was livid and promised myself & him that I would never leave him with anyone other then DH, boarding after much research or someone with a yorkie that cares as much as I do about my baby! SORRY SO LONG !!!

| I am planning our first vacation since getting Zeus last January. I was very stressed about leaving him in a kennel all day too. I did find a very nice lady who does in home boarding. She has a Silky and a Chi and when we went to meet her Zeus played his heart out with her Chi. She doesn't crate in fact he can sleep with her and her two dogs should he want to. He will be part of the family. We will do a one night trial to see how he does. I hope it works out because we will be gone for two weeks. My fear is that he will think I left him forever. |

| For the Yorkie, Daughter will watch. For the big Dog, he goes to the Training/Boarding Facility. He gets the Suite, all the perks, and loves it there. We would not leave the little Yorkie with a boarding facility. No way would we leave her in a cage. |

| We have a dog sitter we LOVE. I found her on craigslist and visited her and her adorable family and got to know her before I trusted to leave Snickers there. She is a god-send. She is a dog trainer and a regular boarder now for her many clients. She treats Snick like he is family, no crates, always with them, and sleeps with her other dogs. Snick has stayed there about 10 times now and it so worth it---so much piece of mind and just a lil guilt. I could NEVER leave Snick anywhere where he has to be in a crate. I hate crates. I would find someone reliable who LOVES dogs and gives your pup attention and love like you do. I do realize this situation may not be available to all. I'm so thankful for her!! Good Luck- Snick & Viv

| I don't know what I am going to do if we vacation. With Trixie being just a puppy and not having full run of the house, I am not sure. She can't be out alone in the yard since she is much smaller than Biscuit (he was 12lbs) and she is still very young. I am hoping that if we go on a vacation this year we either take her with us or that my mom/dad will watch her for us. They love her and she knows them so it would be perfect. Boarding will not work...we did it once with Biscuit and had to come home early because I was just so upset that he was in a cage and afraid. (he didn't like people or other dogs lol)

| I'm VERY lucky that my dad (along with stepmom, little brother, and their 2 dogs) take him when I need to go away. He LOVES it over there and never wants to leave. They've got a huge fenced in yard, he gets pampered and fed a lot of treats, lol. I've probably left him about 10-12 times since getting him in December '08 and every time except once he's stayed with them. The other time, he stayed home at the house we live at with my mom, stepdad and sister... but I don't really trust them as much (no fence, either) so it only happens when I'm desperate. If I didn't have family available, I would definitely find someone able to come to my house. I'm a petsitter myself and really bond with all the dogs I watch... I treat them as my own and their owners all love and trust me. I currently just started watching an 8 week old Rottweiler and to make her feel more comfortable (I'm not bonded or insured, since it's kind of a side job type thing) I gave her a copy of my drivers license, a few references, went and met/interviewed with her, etc.

| we are lucky my parents watch our yorkies for us. they have a chihuahua named Brutus and my boys love to be at their home. We have also left them at home with our 21 year old but she says they gets depressed when we are gone so we found it better to take them to my parents since Brutus entertains them and they forget we are gone. I have always offered to watch my parents dog when they travel but they take him everywhere with them.
