| Big Dog We live in a nice neighborhood in a very small university town. Recently, a group of guys that live a couple houses down started letting their st. bernard out to play in the afternoons. Dexter is 100% not afraid (his best friend is my mom's very large boxer). However, just one tromp, and the dog could easily break dexter's very small bones. I already have started taking dex out on a leash because of a pit bull that gets walked in our neighborhood, but the st. bernard just runs over to "play" with dexter. The owners think that it's funny...but i don't know what to do. Has any one else had this problem. Dexter just can't go outside to pee in the afternoon anymore. It' s become an everyday thing. Any advice would be much appreciated. Amber |

| I have a friend that has a HUGE dog. I forget the name of it right now but its big like that cartoon dog Marmaduke. Looks like him too. I was SOOOOO worried about coco being around this dog and he is definitely bigger than a boxer. But depending on the demanor of the big dog if it is very friendly you should be fine. My friends dog her name is Remy plays with coco and I notice she is VERY aware of not stepping no her. Its so funny to watch because Remy is like hopping and jumping when she plays with her so she doesn't step down but coco seems oblivious to Remy's feet and where she is. I always watch them together but so far nothing has happened and Remy loves her. |

| I do understand this one. Tatum's favorite playmates are my uncle's big dogs. They are so good with her but Tatum just doesn't understand how small she is. A couple times we've gone to Dallas to visit my sister, she's told us we could bring Tatum with us. Well, they have three dogs - two small to medium size mixed breeds and one gigantic Great Dane. Well, as much as SHE trusts that big horse, I just can't take the chance that he will not hurt Tatum. Some people with bigger dogs just don't understand the danger of putting a tiny dog with a huge one. Even in the act of playing, that big dog can do serious damage without meaning to. Recently we were at the vet waiting for our appt. for shots and a huge Boxer came in. He looked really friendly but those dogs are usually just a bundle of muscle and energy and hard to restrain if they see something they want. The receptionist immediately took us to an empty room even though I was holding Tatum in my arms. She said you just can never be too careful around large dogs when you have a little baby like Tatum. I was very impressed with her quick judgement. Another story I may have told before.... when my toy poodle was a puppy (over 15 years ago), I lived next to my grandparents who had several large dogs. Dax (my poodle) was like a little surrogate son to them - they all watched out for him and took care of him. Well, one day my dad and husband were deer hunting on our property and my dad killed a deer. While they were cleaning it, he gave the German Shepherd a piece of it (gross!) and Dax, being the big tough 5 lb. animal he thought he was, went and took it away from Sam (the shepherd). And no, I was not outside at the time to see what the "men" had thought was a good idea! This went back and forth a few times and Sam put up with the little pipsqueak for a while but then finally gave Dax a nip that said "No, I'm the big daddy. It's mine!". Well Sam's tooth went in Dax's head and just managed to sever the eye veins (whatever it's called behind the eye) and long story short (if it's not too late!), Dax ended up with a prosthetic eye for the rest of his 15 years. Scared the hell out of me, needless to say. Sam ended up with buckshot in his butt from my grandpa and he was such a sad, depressed dog for weeks. He knew what he did was wrong and I know he was genuinely sorry for what he did. Months later when Dax got lost out in the woods during a rare ice storm, Sam was the one that went out and found him and herded him back home hours after we started searching for him. I like to think he was trying to make up for past mistakes. Sorry this is so long but just had to point out the dangers that are always there - EVEN with dogs that you know and trust. You just have to stick to your better instincts and know what's best for your baby. Personally I probably wouldn't let my Yorkie play with a St. Bernard but then I feel that may be a little overprotective. Hard one to decide!

| Well I have to tell you, I love both big & small furbabies. We have a Yorkie, Chiuahua and a Rottweiler. They are all best friends. They look out for each other, And they don't get in to fights. Our Rottie thinks she's a lap dog. She can't understand why we can pick up Princess, but not her. She out weighs Princess by 100 pounds. I think it's all in the way you treat your babies. Our's are all family members, they all live inside, and are all very happy. Two years ago we lost Roxanne, our dear rottie we had for 12 years, she never hurt a fly. Like I said, It's all in the way you treat them.

| 1st I would find out what the "leash laws" are in your city/state. If there is a leash law and all dogs/animals must be on leashes when out, then I would report them to Animal Control or Humane Society. Let them know this has become a problem and you want someone to go out there and talk to these gentlemen. If there are strict laws, then there are strict fines for those in violation. This may deter the guys from allowing their st. bernard out unleashed. But, this will mean you will have to leash your baby too, when he goes out. What's enforceable for one is enforceable for everyone. I have to say, one of my pet peeves is loose dogs/cats in the neighborhood! I hate that they can get into yards and do their business and no one cleans it up, they dig in the gardens and just create all kinds of havoc! There is even the potential of serious harm, with cars, etc. And really the dogs/cats are the innocent ones, because they are only doing what comes naturally to them. I don't believe that the owners are acting irresponsibly. |

| Unless it is an aggresive dog, Lacey just runs with the rest of them, she thinks she's big. But, I can understand because their bones are tiny why you are concerned. I think I'd just pick mine up when the neighbors dog is around. |

| I just looked it up. This appears to be your state's leash law Kentucky Leash Law In Kentucky, dogs are not permitted to run at large between sunset and sunrise, unless they are accompanied by and under the control of their owner. I don't like the "unless accompanied by and under the control of" part. However if you ask these people to keep their dog away from your dog and they dont then the dog is not under their control. |

| This afternoon I had Haylee and Graff out front (on a leash) and here came a huge pit bull running at us with her tail wagging. Of course Graff thought he was a bad a-- and tried to go after her. I grabbed them both and went inside. This dog just wanted to play but not Graff he was protecting me and his little sis. There are several dogs that run loose around here. My back yard is fenced in and none of my dogs are out front unless they are leashed. |

| I would be careful and nicely talk to the owner and explain your concern. Even if the dog is nice if it hasn't played with a small dog it might hurt him. If they aren't nice about it give them a copy of the leash law and let them know how a yorkie owner feels about there furbaby. It is sad you can't walk your dog around our own block. I use to walk mine every day till a boxer mix jumped the fence and came after us. I was screaming like a wild women and Thank God the nieghbor was out and helped me. I have never been so scared in my whole life. I couldn't pick them all up. I was so very lucky, he only put a scratch on Maddies back leg, some how she came out of her harness when I was trying to pick her up. Please be very careful.
