The problem is that because it is a mix there is no guaratee what that pup will look like as an adult. And, breeders can tell you all they want that they breed for a specific look or size but that means crap, because with a mix you will not know until that pup is grown. Elaine
Totally agree. Just look at all the purebred yorkies on here and see how much they differ. Now throw in a totally different breed and it's just gonna be a crap shoot!

unfortunately, that's the truth! when i got my pup, it said on the form, "have you had a pet before? where is it now?"

truth is, i had a cat before my daughter was born 7 years ago - and when i got pregnant, i had to move into an apartment - blah blah blah. my aunt was dying to take my cat way before this because she loved her - so when i got in a tight spot, i let her have her (she still has her btw).

anyway, i put on my application NO- haven't had pets before. there are so many animals being put to death and they want to interrogate you! i can understand being concerned in the case of puppy mills or animal abusers - but really? that person was right - sometimes it's easier to lie!

oh, the funny part is that after i filled out the application, the lady said something, and my husband was like, "yeah, we had a cat..." and i nudged him! good timing right after i said we had no pets!

Wow, just wow. When we adopted Bear, we specifically stated that the reason we were glad we did not have a fenced in yard was that our purpose for acquiring him was to help in DH's rehabilitation. It would be too easy to just open a door and let him go out on his own with a fenced yard. This way, DH was forced to leash and walk him everytime he needed to go out. It is still that way. We have the four dogs and no fences. All dogs require leashing before stepping outside, other than that they are strictly indoor dogs, from 80lbs to 5 or 6lbs.

I cannot imagine depriving a dog a home because all you are offering is the run of your entire residence instead of the shelter's small cage...wow.

I agree with you, that being mean isn't helpful, but as you continue doing this type of work, many people suffer from something called "burn out". It's really common in all the helping professions, and in volunteer work. You start out with great intentions, and you know just enough to be helpful, and your heart is in the right place. In time, you learn that homes you have chosen, have not worked out, the people who seemed so great in every way, weren't, and the dog is put up for adoption again. Or even worse, the dogs died because the people you chose clearly misrepresented themselves, and were extremely negligent, and perhaps even abusive. So as time goes on, you either quit doing volunteer work, or you build up a little wall, so you won't blame yourself so much when things don't work out. You will become more skeptical of people and learn that people can lie and mislead about really important things. Rescue workers rarely make decisions based on one thing, and should always be looking for the best home for the dog. If the home isn't as good as the foster home, many rescues believe in keeping the dog in the foster home. I expect, "burn out" is why many rescue volunteers seem "mean". They are only thinking of the best interest of the dog, and not the best interest of the humans. Finding that right balance that allows you to keep doing rescue, and yet allows you to protect yourself when your decisions have been poor, is no easy task. Also, I imagine a rescue workers decision in placement of a pet shouldn't be based on how much they "like" the person, because that could color their decisions, so keeping a little distance when interviewing a potential client would be beneficial, yet could make them come off as "cold."

Nancy1999, if you are going to insist on being logical and compassionate and giving both sides of every debate, so to speak, so that people make rational decisions instead of jumping on the proverbial lighted torch and pitchfork bandwagon...I shall put you on permanent ignore...really...I will.

Lol, I'm on permanent ignore for a lot of people, but not for that reason! What a nice post! It's just a fact - I'm old!!! and I use to feel the exact same way as others now feel, but in time, I broadened my viewpoints, (and my hips ) Oh why wasn't I wise when I was young!

Some people will tell you that they have put you on their ignore list. Others will "hint" at it, for example, they ask a question, you answer it, and they reply with, "Anyone know the answer?" as, if they haven't seen your post. I guess this is to let you know, you have been placed on ignore, as if somehow this knowledge will cut you to the heart.

I think I'd trade 10 years of my "wisdom" for 10 years of their youth!

You're not on my ignore. You keep me abreast of posts made by people that are on ignore....just by quoting their post
