| Tried everything. Need advice. Ok, so I posted a thread on here once before about my yorkie Rusty and my problems with crate training.I recently started working again so my mom has him during the day while I'm at work. He's turning 1 May 3rd and as much as I want to let him run around freely, I can't trust him. He chews on wires and over the weekend we stayed at my boyfriends house, he decided chewing a huge chunk out of our nightstand was a good idea. Whenever I put him in the crate he barks nonstop until you let him out and he comes out soaked. I bought a bottle to put on the side of the crate for water but it seems to only make the barking worse because now he has a way to make his throat feel better after barking. After trying to continuously crate train him, he learned how to open the door so I would come home to my bedroom TRASHED and him still barking. Alot of people said try an exercise pen so I went out and bought one. When I first set it up I even sat in it with him for a few minutes to show him it was ok but he freaks out even worse than being in the crate. I put him in it and walked out of the room to see how he would react and I honestly thought someone broke into the room within the 30 seconds and was killing him. Does anyone else have this problem? What did you do to solve it? And does anyone have any advice for me? My boyfriend wants to get a bark collar for him and as much as I disagree with him about it, it seems that its going to be my only option. Of course I'm saving it for a last resort type of thing. Did anyone use one of those collars for there yorkies? How did they handle it? I saw that they have spray collars that don't zap him but just spray him everytime he barks or they also have little boxes you put in the room with them that make loud noises to startle them but I've heard really bad reviews on them. What do you think? Please help. Last edited by Duhxo000; 04-05-2010 at 04:48 PM. |

| How much exercise is your dog getting in the morning before going into the xpen..how much when you come home? Does he have toys and things to chew on so he is not bored? How many hours is he in the cage? I am totally opposed to shock collars...you would not do it to a child why would you do it to a dog...but this is just my opinion. He really sounds to me like he just doesn't want to be left alone all the time...and that he has high anxiety.

| He's got tons of toys anytime we go somewhere he gets a new toy. He goes for walks 2-3 times a day. He's not in the crate long at all. He goes in the crate for about 1 to 2 hours at a time.My mom takes him out and plays with him during the day but puts him back if she needs to do something or go out. How do I break the anxiety? |

Instead of a bark collar you might want to consider the "Dog Repeller". I bought one to stop Toby from barking and now all I have to do is point it at him and he stops. I don't even have to use it. I bought mine on Ebay for about $14. Just do a search for "dog repeller." No more barking!!!!!!! It's amazing and doesn't hurt the dog. Just a suggestion................

The dog repeller, is that the thing that just makes a loud noise? I heard alot of people say it doesnt work so im not sure how i feel about buying it but i reallly dont wanna get the shock collar. I tried give him a treat (a bone, his kong, anything) to keep him occupied but the second i leave it's like nothing else exists, he just freaks out. My vet gave me a trainers number but she is VERY expensive and i just started my new job. Is there a way to calm the anxiety? | |

| Yes it is the one that makes noise but humans can't hear it. I would try that before spending lots of money on a trainer. But as the others said, you might want to talk to your vet.

Yorkie Yakker | I'm guessing but I'm not a professional of course. I think your dog has separation anxiety. Which means it hates being alone. But it's curable. I don't know all the answers you should look it up or ask a professional but the bottom line is your dog needs more time with you and more exercise. A trainer once told me I need to: 1. Play or walk my dog for at least 30-1hr before I go to wk and again afterwards until it eases up. 2. Don't say bye to your dog before you go, it can trigger the anxiety and maybe your mom can walk your pup while she's watching him in the afternoon. Just an idea 3. Don't leave ALL your pups toys out, they lose interest/appeal, put them in "their" place and occasionally bring out a new toy. Switch it up. Just a couple at a time. 4. If this doesn't wk "himalayan chews" "flossies" are great as well. Hours of fun. Good Luck!

| Do you crate your baby at night? You might start out at night...super soft blanket and a lovey. We keep all three of ours in crates at night and for long periods during the day. The crate is just big enough for them to turn around in; I have been told dogs like the closeness of small spaces to sleep to feel secure. You might try to buy an extra crate as well (all 3 of mine are the solid carriers) and get a toy stuffed Terrier and put it in the other crate while you put yours in a crate then put them facing each other. I have my 2 yorkies facing each other so they know that the other is in bed too. Good luck |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | If you don't already do so, start watching 'It's Me Or the Dog' on Animal Planet on Sat nights w/reruns most mornings. Victoria works with a lot of these problems & may help give you ideas. Always be sure to reward good behaviors with tiny treats & praise. Also keep checking yt Training section. There should be lots of ideas there too. Good luck, I'm sure you are frustrated.

| Suggest Ceaser millan's videos, books, or tv show. His perspective and methods helped us a lot. We had major barking issues, thought I was going crazy, but now Kona rarely barks. |

| Linus stays in his small plastic crate when I'm gone for short periods of time and in his expen (which is only 2'x4') when I'm gone a little longer. The trick to train him was to never place him in the crate or pen, I always entice him to go in there himself with treats and bully sticks and let him go on his own. We also only have beds in the expen and crate, there really aren't any comfy places for him to go anywhere else. Therefore, if he wants a nap, he has to go one of those places. He caught onto the expen really quickly because he loves his bed and he was still able to see what everyone was doing. We originally put the expen with his comfy bed in the middle of the living room where he could see everything and we just ignored him until he was bored and went in there to take a nap. Try moving the pen to a different area. Linus loves his expen but still won't go in there if we put it on the hardwoord floor. He much prefers it to be in a carpeted room (with a plastic tablecloth underneath to protect the floor). We keep the pen adjusted to a pretty small size right now while he's potty training so it's only big enough for his bed and potty pad, but we do keep a small heavy water dish in the corner (away from the bed) in case he gets thirsty. None of the water bottle holders worked for us. If your expen doesn't have a step-through door, you need one. Linus walks in and out of his pen constantly. I bought Linus's pen at Tractor Supply Company (where the regular price was 1/2 the sale price of petsmart!) The crate was and is a little more tricky. The key is to take it SLOWLY. We hide treats in his crate on a regular basis in hopes that if he ever chooses to go in there, he'll find something good. We also make sure that it's really comfy and has some great chewies and toys. Over the past few weeks, he has spent more and more time in there everyday (on his own accord). I've only closed him in there a few times, and each time was for about an hour, but each time seems to be getting a little better. Just make sure you keep the door of the crate open and in an ideal area of your house and eventually they go in there on their own. Once again, the most important tip I can leave you with is to make sure that all his favorite things are in that expen and crate. Strip the rest of your house of all his treats, toys and beds so that the pup is drawn to the pen. If the only place to lie down is in his favorite bed in his pen, he'll go in there on his own!! If you force him in, he'll never catch on. Last edited by StaceyDee; 04-06-2010 at 05:07 AM. |
