Telling a friend not to breed/diplomacy I have a coworker that has an akc (non yorkie)toy breed. He thinks that he can get a lot of money for puppies and wants to breed her, but in these hard times I really don't think he can. I have been looking to adopt a yorkie or silky since the loss of mine and I search rescue sites, so I know that there are so many unwanted good dogs out there. Am I wrong for trying to convince him not to breed the dog? If I am not, how do I convince him not to breed her and just have her spayed, which he is actually considering? My yorkie died partly because she was not spayed so I feel like I need to help convince him to get her spayed.

I think he should get her spayed. Take him on a journey through all of the sites about rescues. People can't afford to eat and pay for gas, let alone buy puppies for hundreds of dollars. Not in this current economy. Good luck and I hope you can change his mind! At least you're trying...

I have to agree with you. After learning what I have about the *great* responsibility that goes along with breeding I quickly decided I would never be able to breed my babies. If you've not, you should share your experience of loosing your beloved pet because of this. I also think most people are unaware of the expense involved in properly breeding, and like your friend think they can make money from it.

Since mine passed I have been asking people around the office if theirs are spayed, and suggesting to them to get it done. She died from pyrometra that couldn't be treated because she had chronic renal failure. She got really sick and really quick(i didn't even know about the CRF until i took her to the Evet), and I don't think people realize that pyrometra is very common in dogs because it doesn't rally happen in humans.

I am just thankful for all those who contributed to them. I am always excited to see someone trying to protect the breed just as you are doing. | |

I didn't realize that that was the same thing. The vet told me that the sun should never set on pyrometra, but she would not survive the operation. I asked my regular vet about spaying her a couple of years ago, but they said she was too old, and the risks outweighed the benefits, so I didn't do it, I wish I had.
