| Napoleon...infant questions! I am so glad that today is a new day on YT!! I am sitting here staring at my beautiful fur babies because the skinbabies are off to school! All is quiet, there is a peaceful rain outside, I have a nice cup of java and my laptop! Louis is laying in his bed and Paris and Napoleon are in a shallow laundry basket with a soft bed inside next to me on the couch! They are cuddling and nursing which I never get tired of watching! I am so thankful that I get to be their mama and although the circumstances behind Napoleon's birth were not ideal I feel really priviledged to get to watch a puppy grow from the moment of birth all the way through adulthood. This is a scene that many non breeders do not get to see! That being said, I have a few questions and was wondering if any of you pro's out there could help me out by providing some answers? Here goes! 1. When will his eyes open? (he is 10 days old) 2. When will he begin to try and walk? He is scooting all over the place and has been since he first came out! I had to put them back in the laundry basket because the little booger was getting out of the bed they were in before! 3. Any suggestions on when he should be dewormed? Should the vet do it or should I? How often? 4. He is gaining a good amount of weight every day! Was 6 oz at birth and now weighs about 13 oz. Is that an appropriate amount of weight for his age? 5. Can he hear me when I talk to him and kiss him? Does he recognize my smell yet? 6. Do you have any other suggestions for me on things I should be watching out for or doing at this stage of the game 7. When will he be weened? Also, Paris is receiving nutracal everyday and a calcium supplement but she isn't interested in eating any more than she would usually eat which is only once a day. Is this okay for her milk supply? She is on a dry puppy food mixed with cottage cheese for more calcium and a little bit of little caesar's puppy food for taste. Is there anything else I need to be doing for her? She gets her c-section stitches out at the end of the week and I can't wait to give her a bath! Can I give her a bath before the stitches come out? Her incision is completely closed! Any other suggestions you have that concern her care would be much appreciated! Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions! Have a great day! Mary |

| Well, not having any real experience I can't answer your questions but I think if you post this on the Breeders Forum you might get the answers you need

| Hi there, I have had the pleasure of watching our little Ceasar growing from birth. His eyes were late in opening. At about 12 or so days I was starting to become worried that he wouldn't open his eyes. So I began wiping his little eyes with warm water, and after the first episode I could see a little crack appear. I believe I did that for 2 days, maybe 2x a day and everything worked out wonderfully. At that stage I had a pee pad right outside of his puppy bed and he would actually crawl OUT of his bed & pee on his pads !!!! It may sound unbelievable, but it is TRUE !!! I have pics !!! He is now almost 2 and is still amazing me with how smart and HILARIOUS he is. They will start to crawl at about 2 weeks and should be walking at about 4-5 weeks old they should be wormed at 2,4,6,8 and 10 weeks old by the vet along with mom and they should get their first vaccine at 6 weeks old I hope this helps !!! PM me if I can answer ANY more of your questions. I am always happy to help. All the BEST and ENJOY this life experience. It is so EXCITING !!!!! CONGRATULATIONS !!!!! |

| Hi Mary, I, too, am glad that it's a new day. The it isn't raining at my house, but I do have my cup of strong coffee -- I'll answer your questions based upon my own personal experiences and hopefully others will do the same.... To make things easier to understand I copied and pasted your questions and my replies are bolded in bolded purple..... 1)When will his eyes open?(he is 10 days old) Generally eyes open between 10 abd 14 days -- with Klassie's four little sweeties that were born 3/1/10 the last born pup (largest male) opened his eyes on day 10, two pups opened their eyes on day 12 and the last pup on day 14. 2) When will he begin to try and walk? Of course they start crawling the moment they are free from the sack. Again, using this last litter as an example, they started walking between 3 and 4 weeks. They have been crawing all over the place and slowly but surely the little ones "get up on their legs". They are 4 weeks old today and are beginning to run - it is so very cute because they are still wobbly. 3) Any suggestions on when he should be dewormed? Be forewarned -- This question will bring a lot of differing opinions, and may get "very passionate". I have a very close relationship with my vet, Dr. Amy. She is incredible. Because it is my personal comfort zone - I don't worm pups prior to 8 or 9 weeks. My moms and dads don't have worms and my pups have never tested positive. The wormer is generally Panacur - we have never had a problem with this product - but remember wormers are poison - poison for worms and pups can have reactions. 4) He is gaining a good amount of weight every day! Was 6 oz at birth and now weighs about 13 oz. Sounds like he is gaining and growing well. 5) Can he hear me when I talk to him and kiss him? Does he recognize my smell yet? Without a doubt he recognizes your smell -- and I do believe that my pups recognize my voice -- I talk to them (through mom's tummy) from the day of the first breeding, just like I talked to my skin kids inutero, so I can't help but believe that they "know me". LOL - it may just be mommy pride kicking in, but hey, who cares 6) Relax and love the pups. Start reading through the threads and glean as much info as you can. 7) When will he be weaned? I always allow my moms to determine when the pups should be weaned - however - I wouldn't hesitate to do a forced weaning if pups or mom were in any type of crisis. It is much gentler on the pups and moms, no stress involved. No pup ever leaves before they are at least 12-14 weeks so it works out well. Between 4 and 6 weeks my moms generally start spending more time away from the little ones. As soon as the eyes open I start offering "puppy mush" a mixture of ground up puppy food and canned goat's milk diluted with equal parts water. Mom usually eats most of it - this is a learning process for the pups. Dr. Amy does not condone giving calcuim supplemetns such as Oral Cal Plus unless bloodwork has been done and it is absolutely necessary. I do give lots of calcium righ foods -- I feed moms from the last couple of weeks through weaning a Pregnant Mommy Custard. The recipe was a whelping pudding that was gleaned from Mardelin and modified. Giving calcuim interfers with the body's natural ability to pull calcium from the bones. Mom should have food and fresh water available to her at all times. Be sure that you are feeding a super premium food -- I would not feed Cesar's it is not the best of foods. I make a "chicken goo" to enhance the flavor of the kibble. Recipe for chicken goo - boil chicken breast in a small amount of water -- cool, then blend the chicken with the broth to make a "goo". Talk to your vet about bathing her - that's what I would do. Last edited by chattiesmom; 03-29-2010 at 07:05 AM. |

They begin to wobble around at about 3 weeks old. I do not worm unless they need worming. If the mother does ot have worms, the puppy will not have worms. But I would have the get do it since you're not experienced Weight gain sounds good, as long as he is nursing there is no reason to be concerned about his weight. Their ears open about the same time that their eyes do. Just watch to mke sure he is eating and gaining, his mother will take care of him. His mother will wean him sometime between 6 to 8 weeks. You can start to offer him food around 4 to 5 weeks. I start out with canned goats milk and baby rice cereal and canned pedigree lamb and rice for puppies, then start offering the baby dog Royal Canin. With just one puppy nursing it sounds like she is eating fine, as he starts to demand more milk she will eat more. I leave dryfood out all the time and give a half boiled egg and cottage cheese twice a day. No bath until the stitches are out. | |

| Thank you to everyone who has answered these questions! It has been very helpful and informative and I will take it to heart! He has been scooting around since the moment he was born! He is strong, active and we've nicknamed him "biggie smalls", "fatboy", and "bubba" because of the little porker he is! I am already so attached to him that I don't know how you breeders ever let go of a puppy even to a good home! There is no way on earth I could sell him he is our baby and even my husband is attached to him! I caught him cuddling with him last night as he watched tv! So funny! I am eager to learn all I can and be the best yorkie owner I can be! Thanks for taking the time to give me this information and if you think of anything else I should know please don't hesitate to give me a shout! Will keep you updated on how he is doing! Anxious to see his little eyes! Have a great day! Mary |

| Oh and to someone who suggested I relax, love the pups and read through the threads to glean as much info as I can! Luckily I can say that since the birth is now over and mom and baby are both doing fine I am back to relaxing! I love these dogs like they are my skinbabies and as far as info goes I am doing that with my morning coffee every single day just researching what you guys have said and even writing some things down! So thanks for that suggestion!!! Good confirmation I am on the right track! |

| Can you guys give me an advice on potty training him once he's walking around? Louis and Paris go outside when it's nicer out and not dumping rain like it is right now! Otherwise they still use pee pads in the house! Also, I'm going to attempt to leave them this week for the first time since he's been born! Usually I take them all with me in their dog bags or I'm not gone for more than 20 min from the house. Where should I leave Paris and Napoleon? In a pack n play I have set up? |

| The pack and Play would be great. I have mine in a 4x4 pen divided into 3 sections., when they are three weeks old I take them out of the whelping bed and put them on a towel in the smallest section. Within a week they start to go through to the area with the pee pad to potty. they are 5 eeks old now and they use the pee pad 95% of the time, the rest of the time they will potty in the section for play, but not in the sleeping area. So start introducing him to the pee pad as soon as he begins to wander around. |

| Here's some basic information on Newborn Pup Normal Physciologic Values. Weight Gain - Twofold increease per 8-10 days. Your pups are right on. Body Temperature - Weeks 1-2: 94-99 degrees Fahrenheit. Weeks 3-4; 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Water requirement 2-3 ounces per pound per day, turnover about two times that of adult. Caloric requirement 60-100kcal per pd per day. Respiratory rates 15-35 per minute Heart Rate - Approx 220 per minute Sucking Reflex Usually strong at birth. Weak in physically immature, abnormal or chilled puppies. Shivering Reflex - Developes 6-8 days after birth. Muscle Tone - Firm; puppies stand upright at 3 weeks with normal tone and postural reflexes; walking and running by four weeks. Eyes open - 10-16 days (however, I've had a pup that was a week premature that did open it's eyes until day 21). Visual perception - Absent less than three weeks; present at four weeks. Hyperkinesia (activated slee) Normal one-three weeks; disappears after four weeks; body twitching. Weaning, I usually allow my mom's call the shots, but attempt giving them gerber's rice cereal with goats milk and Karo syrup at around 4 weeks....It's messy...but, mom will clean them and the mess up after. Potty training.....if you have a good mom.....once they've been given their first puppy shots; between 8 and 9 weeks and are allowed on the ground....your mom will teach them. However, I do have potty pads in their whelping area....so, that when they are able to get out of the whelping bed on their own....it is available to them. Don't be surprised that your mom continues to diaper them until 8 or 9 weeks. I have some moms that continue until they are older.
