| Going for walks...... ....does anyone else find that going for a walk is a continual series of 'stops'?! Mr. Darcy stops and tinkles on EVERYTHING even when his has run out of anything to tinkle with. Is this normal? Difficult to get any kind of exercise at all - or is it my fault for not teaching him to walk properly on a leash

| Piper loves her walks and she walks in overdrive the whole way. She can walk 3 miles in 40 minutes. She'll only stop to pee or poop when needed. I've never seen little legs move so fast.

| Jackson, like Piper, can also walk forever. He loves it. He will try and mark a lot in the beginning of the walk, and I typically let him, but after a few pees... I've had enough and simply keep walking. I don't allow it, I literally just keep walking as if he didn't stop, and then he just gives it up and follows me.

| To answer your question, it is normal. My scottie is a boy and he will pee on everything outside. He goes and goes and goes, until there is nothing left and then he still hikes his leg. It must be a guy thing...hehehe |

| Oh yes! Zeus stops constantly. I try to get a good pace going and he puts his brakes on and has to sniff or pee on something. It is so annoying. At a decent pace with moderate stopping we do 2 miles in 40 minutes. I wish he would just move along. I personally think he needs to be leash trained. |

| Joey tries to pull that on me, but if you just continue walking, they'll eventually get that it's not ok. I will make one or two stops on our walks, and if they have to poop, they are allowed to stop for that...unless it's gonna be the whole "i'm picky about where on this grass I poop" - then we continue on until they have to go badly enough to just get it over with.

| Some little girls like to mark, too! My little sweet Daisy is one of them. We use this rule: - When the leash is in my RIGHT hand, she gets to go ahead and sniff and investigate and do her thing. - When the leash is in my LEFT hand, it is time to heel and stop only when I decide. (If she really needs to go, she will fall behind and act funny) Dogs and kids love rules. Before our walk, we go through a few commands like SIT, STAY, COME, DOWN, letting her know who the leader is going to be. Don't forget to praise, praise, praise! We stop and "wait" at every street until I give the "okay" command. And then we try to have a destination place where she gets a break to sniff around a little and get some praises. Then it is back home again. At first I had a hard time getting her to heel. So I took her stroller and held the leash so she had to walk next to the back wheel. That way, the stroller was the boss, not me. ("Hey, it's not my fault sweetie, that big stroller said so.") I got this idea from Cesar Milan using a bicycle or skates to exercise big dogs.

YT 500 Club Member | Both my two will try it also, I let them pee once then keep walking untill I'm ready to let them go again. Off lead they'll be trying to out do each other in marking the most spots, but then they get bored and start playing and chasing. |

Same here. I was reading an obedience training book and the trainer called the stopping to mark constantly bad manners! It gave me a laugh because if I had not read it and let Raley be the boss I would lose the battle! | |

| Well from what everyone says we all have the same problem! So I will definitely start leash training him - and I know the sit and stay until told to move is so safe for any puppy - if they start running into danger and you can shout sit and they will, and they will stay until you can go and pick them up- I wonder how hard that one is to teach them??!!!!
