| Getting my first Yorkie - All Help Wecome! Hi everyone. I am new around here and need some help. I am researching getting my first Yorkie and I have a few questions. I lean towards an older dog because i am not cut out for a 12-week-old. By older I mean at least 6 months but I prefer 12 months or older. I always thought that I wanted a female but, after doing lots of research, now think that a male might be better. I already have a 5 1/2 year old female mix who is 24 lbs and loves other dogs. I want a healthy yorkie. I want a lap-dog. I want a yorkie that will get along with my current dog. Originally I was going to get a maltese but after further research I have decided that the Yorkie is for me. I have been in touch with a few breeders and I am close to making a decision but I really, really appreciate any input that you can give me. Oh, and my husband and I are retired so we are home most of the day with our dog(s). Thanks for your help! ..................Pat p.s. I sound just like one of my kids when they were youg: "I want..." |

Senior Yorkie Talker | Hello and welcome to YT! Sounds like you know what you want, my only advice is to be patient and don't jump on the first thing you see, especially if you don't trust something about it. I just adopted a 2 yr old female and couldn't be happier about it, she's such a sweetie and is exactly the way you described...loves my other dog and loves to cuddle most the day.It took me months to find her but when i did i knew she was the right one. Good luck on your search, glad you've done your research the way it should be done!

| Hi! Welcome to YorkieTalk!! I am a new Yorkie owner too and I must say that I am loving every minute of it. My little one, Diji, is 3 months now and he is just a ball of laughs. My avatar pic was taken yesterday when he decided to climb into my book bag and refused to get out when I had to leave for class. I am not sure about bringing older Yorkies home but I have quite a few family friends who have Yorkies of 3years plus and they are still as cute and loving as ever. I would imagine that if you get an older dog that is house trained you'd skip out on that whole saga which is a plus. I am really struggling with getting Diji used to Pee time outside. This website is just a small indication of how many Yorkie mad people their are in the world and if you just have a read through some of the general threads you see some interesting and fun stories about just how much joy these dogs bring to many lives. I have never been so attached to any dog as I am my Diji. Enjoy your Yorkie! Keep us posted on how it goes. P.S. if you look through the general posts there is one called "Petco Riley" or something similar that Yorkie Talker adopted Riley who wasnt being looked after not too long ago and he was already a few months old by then. Have a look for it and contact her> She would probably be able to give you great advice. |

| I'm prejudiced, but yorkies are a great breed of dogs. I agree with the other posters when they say to take your time. You will know when it's right! |

| I have a 6 year old 24 pound Boston Terrier, and I just brought a very tiny pregnant 3 year old Yorkie home, and they are doing very well together! Like the other posters said, just keep looking til something tells you the little one is the right one! Also, when introducing your new furbaby to your other pet, I would recommend NOT doing it at your house. Go to a park or something so they can get to know each other on neutral territory. It will help them bond better! I have been rescuing dogs for years and I ALWAYS introduce the new ones at the park. It really helps! Oh, and welcome to YT! You will love it here! |

| Welcome to YT! If you know you want an adult yorkie, why not look into rescue? Since you are both retired, I'm sure you will get approved by a rescue. Not all rescue dogs are old, ugly, or have behavioral issues. My foster yorkie Katie was an owner surrender and needed bladderstone surgery. She's friendly, playful, likes other dogs, and is very smart! Bc there are so many people losing their jobs and homes, many families have had to give up their pets. Might be something that could work out for you! I see you are in FL. Just like here in CA we have a big problem with pets who need homes. maybe you can help save one!

| I actually have looked for a rescue. The dog I have now is a rescue and I am all in favor of the rescue. A few month's ago there was a large group of rescued yorkies here in Florida. I can't remember where they were from. There was an article in the paper that said the chances of getting one of the rescues was not very good as so many people want rescues. Anyway, I think rescues are great and would welcome one into my home in a heartbeat. |
