Potty problems solved... for the moment anyway. I bought a 5 month old male Yorkie about two months ago. He was trained to use newspaper and so I continued that when I brought him home. He did great at first but started what seemed to be marking. I had him neutered at 6 months and started him on pee pads which worked much better. He still had a few accidents now and then though and I want him completley house trained. So here is what worked for us. Lucky for me Hadley sleeps in a crate by my bed all night. I put my pj bottoms right outside the door of his crate and that makes him feel better lol. He can usually make it from 11pm till 5-6 am. If he does stir at all I take him out. We now have moved the pee pads from the laundry room to the garage and I put a little pen around them so when he is there he knows he is there to potty and not play. During the day I have him on a leash. I hated this idea at first but it has worked great. He loves to be with me all the time anyway and now there is no room for error. I know where he is at all times. The only time the leash is off is if he is in a lap, which is alot too. When I take him to the pads and he goes I also praise him like crazy and give him a pinch of a liver treat. I am going to start marking the days we go without an accident on the calendar, I am SO excited to see some progress and just wanted to share what works for us. Oh I forgot to mention if for some reason we are all busy and can't watch him he is in the crate ( which isn't that often). Only problem I have been off for Spring Break since I teach school. Not sure what to do tomorrow now that its back to work till summer. Will probably have to put a pad back in laundry room while Im gone. I hope it doesn't confuse him. |
