| Is it too late? Hey everyone! I'm hoping that you have some advice for me and my DH. Our pup, Cohen, is about a year and a half old. He started marking at 6 months, and humping at about one year. We didn't want to get him neutered because we had always considered breeding him--he has great coloring and AKC papers so we thought he would be a perfect daddy. His habits were manageable, because he rarely did it unless he was in unfamiliar territory. Recently he has begun to mark all over the house. He has become extremely aggressive toward our neighbor's dogs, unprovoked (he is doing the attacking). I've tried everything, and I mean everything. Trust me. The last thing that I can possibly think of is to neuter him. But I am worried that since he has already picked up the habits, they will stick. Have any of you had any luck with neutering at a late age? What can I expect to happen? Thanks for any advice you have.

I appreciate this valuable information on breeding, and I agree that everyone considering breeding should read this ahead of time, however, I am not considering breeding anymore--that is why I am thinking of neutering. I am just afraid that neutering him won't help his habits, since he has had them for so long.

| I do think it will help... if not a lot, at least a little bit. This is why it's always suggested to get your dogs neutered before 6-7 months of age to prevent this. But to answer your question, I don't think it's ever too late to neuter as it will prevent health problems in the future. I've also heard of older dogs getting fixed and it calming them down. Remember it will take a few months for the testosterone to get out of their system. The marking will be difficult to get him out of for sure but I think it's possible if you are 100% committed. He needs to be watched 24/7 and when he can't be watched, he needs to go in a crate or expen or a gated area... or wearing belly bands. He sounds like basic obedience training would help him out too. There can be very friendly obedient unaltered dogs if they are trained properly but I do believe that overall neutering makes for a better pet. Dogs naturally need to mate twice a year and when they are unaltered, it will drive them crazy if they don't get to and often leads to aggression, running away to find a female in heat, etc. Basically, I think you should neuter. It's not an easy way out though and it won't automatically cure your dog, however I think it's worth it and will for sure help out in training him!

| We just neutered Jack (at 8 1/2 months old) because he was marking everywhere. I can happily say after he was neutered for approximately 2 weeks, he stopped marking in the house. I did use a product on the areas that he used to mark to get rid of the urine, but he is using the puppy pads religiously! I couldn't be happier and so glad I had him neutered. Not to mention going for walks has been wonderful as he doesn't want to stop every two feet to mark his scent.

| A friend of mine has a Morkie....he was just neutered at 20 months old. He marked all the time. She has told me he has almost stopped his marking as well as become for lovable and not as aggressive with her other dogs. I would just use belly bands on him till the marking stops.

Yeah the aggression thing is a worry of mine also because right now he is our only dog, but I know that some day in the future we will probably get another and I would hate for him to be aggressive with that dog. If we make him an appointment at the vet it will probably be May and he will exactly 20 months then, so I can only hope for similar results!
