| Question: Thin Fur? Chloe will be a year old at the end of this month and she's my first Yorkie so I'm constantly learning. When we first got her as a puppy, I was kind of shocked by how thin her fur was. I've never had a dog that didn't have the double coat so I wasn't used to being able to see skin so easily! I've also learned that she's definitely got the "silky" coat which I realize isn't as fluffy as "cottony" coated dogs. But as she's grown, her fur on her body has filled out quite a bit. However, the fur on her head still seems very thin and fine to me. I've seen some pictures on here of dogs that seem to have very full faces and their top knots seem to be made up of a good deal of fur. When I put Chloe's hair into a pony tail, it's probably not even as big around as a pencil! So..my question for those of you who've had Yorkies for awhile and know them so much better than I do! Is this normal for young Yorkies? Will her hair on top grow thicker as she gets older or will she most likely always have such baby fine hair? Thanks! -C

| Apple has very thin hair...When her hair was long enough, for a top-knot, I put it up every day, and it got thinner and thinner and thinner (from breakage, I suppose)...Also, when I got Buzz, four months ago, he would pull her top knot out, every single day...I know it was him, because it would show up, later, in his "business"...lol...I decided Apple was going to be bald, if I kept it up, much longer, so I cut a visor, so I don't have to put her hair up, to keep it out of her face...It's not as girly, but I'm hoping her hair on the top of her head will start to get thicker...If it does, I'll let the visor grow out, if not, welllll, a visor it is...At 17 months, I've decided this Apple's hair is just going to be thin...Buzz, on the other hand, has course hair, and he has a visor, because he looks cute w/it....So, I guess we just take them, as they are, and love everything about them, through thick and thin.... |

| Yes the silkies are sometimes pretty thin. Baxter has thin hair, and I had to cut a visor for him. It really helps to keep those other pieces back out of his face. There are a few youtube videos that show you how to cut it. It's really easy.

| Oh, I should have mentioned...bows and ponytails are for special occasions (holidays, family visits, etc) and usually only stay in for an hour or two. Purely for decorative purposes in other words. I keep her front bang portion trimmed so she can see. She doesn't mind bows as long as she is occupied with something else, but as soon as she gets bored she notices them and starts trying to de-bow herself! Thanks so much for the replies! It's good to know that it's just normal. I love her being a silky because she never tangles which is a huge plus. And as far as pictures or just looking at her, you really can't tell that she's thin on top. It's usually only when I'm drying her after a bath that it's glaringly obvious. I use Bio-groom conditioner on the rest of her, but leave it off her head to help cut down on the greasiness...but I may see what happens if I use conditioner on her head too. Maybe that's why the rest of her body seems fluffier! -C

| I have exactly the same issue with Bella. I started growing out her visor to see if her top knot would be thicker. But, as you posted, I think I'm going to have the same thinning problems you experienced. Her hair is so thin and soft on her head and it breaks easily. She looks cutest with the little alligator clip barrettes because the plain band for the top knot looks a bit silly. I just twist a bit of her hair and add the clip and the clip makes it look like she has more hair then she does. I can actually keep the hair on her head a bit shorter as well which makes it a bit fluffier. My issue is figuring out where to part the hair by the corner of her eyes to cut the visor. She had her nose shaved when I got her so we're in the midst of growing that out. The problem is the hair on her nose is about the same length as the hair in her visor. Perhaps a video will help figure out where that part should be; I'm headed to youtube now to investigate!
