Donating YT 500 Club Member | Whether it's biting or playing, you need to yelp loudly every single time. That's how they teach each other not to bite & play too rough. You can follow that with 'no bite' command. 12 week pups have had the benefit of 4 more weeks of that important training from each other for biting & other socialization skills. It's not a complete cure all, but they are better than at 8 weeks. When he gets to playing to rough & biting, all play stops & ignore him until he settles down. To some extent, you have to allow for them teething & having very sore painful gums. They need to chew. It's a hard time to get through, but it will pass in a few months as they get their permanent teeth in. Have plenty of toys for him to satisfy his need to chew. Squeaky toys are great for creating a diversion from naughty behavior. Stay firm, patient, & consistant every day to help him get through this age. Good luck!!!

I got mine at 6 weeks. He's a biter too. He is 4 months now and he doesn't bite as much. Yelping at them when they bite you does help. Jackson has scratched my face pretty good a couple time and I yelled ouch, (cause it really did hurt) and he stopped, looked at me, and came up and put his nose on my face, lol... He's so sweet when he's not being a monster. I also feel like since I did get him so early that we may have bonded better. There was about a week where he hated me for some reason, but then he got over it and I was his best freind again. LOL...

| I got Apple @ 11 1/2 wks., and she was a big-time biter...I just kept saying "no bites", 'till she learned not to do it...If she wouldn't stop, when I told her "no bites", I would get up and leave the room, for a few minutes...She caught on, quickly, that I wasn't going to be there, if she was biting me... |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I got Cali at 9 weeks and she went through a bad biting phase. I thought she was possessed! She would just lunge at me and bite me. I got Roxie after 12 weeks and she never went through that stage.

| We got Wrigley at 12 1/2 weeks and we did not have that problem with her at all! We rescued Camden at 2 1/2yrs old and though she wasn't a biter, she does play rough. She never learned proper play from littermates & she didn't have any social skills!

| Karma is 2 and i just got her, she mouths ALL the time, she doesn't bite hard but no matter what she mouths you. if you are petting her or playing she mouths. She does it to the kids too. any time anyone reaches at her she bites its by no means hard. but we are still saying no bite, in her case though we still pet her. i think its a nervous thing she is doing i think??

Siblings would yelp and refruse to play, the mother would snap at them. Not biting, but scaring them and making them move away from her. A dominant dog never moves away. They make the pyounger dog move away. If you move away from them they will learn that this is a way to control you. So my advice is to make a snapping sound at them and use your fingers to nip at them. Do this until they no longer try to come near you. then stop and let them come to you nicely before giving affection. Last edited by JeanieK; 03-15-2010 at 03:11 PM.

| Oh yes. I rehomed Cooper at 16 weeks and she was HORRIBLE at biting all the time when playing, and she bit *hard* This was due to the fact she was taken from her litter wwaayyyyy to early at 5-6 weeks. She has also had many other "issues" I feel came from this mistake of letting her go too early. I did as you have been advised above. I would not let her use me as a chew toy and would often yelp, usually b/c it did hurt. She quickly learned this was not acceptable. Good Luck to you. You must be consisten and patient. |
