Yorkie Yakker | Sweet memories..first days home.... Hi Guys..a while back I asked what made you choose your baby...and your stories were touching and heartwarming...some even made me cry. Now I would love to hear what "first memories" you have of your fur kids. Do you remember the ride home with that sweet little bundle? Or was it the first night home or something that happened during those first days with you new pup that really made an impression on you..Or maybe the first time your baby looked for just you to cuddle with...I know you guys have the stories...and I'll thank you in advance. I know they will be wonderful!!!!!.........Lisa |

| Long story but here it is! I had a hint of nostalgia not long ago. I was cleaning up and organizing all my pictures when I finally got to the puppy folder. WOW! Over 500 pics in about 7 months, can you tell I'm smitten? I even made a welcome home album http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/album.php?albumid=9398 Let's see.... that first day.... I was running on maybe 2 hours of sleep and 10 am couldn't get there fast enough. I felt like a kid going to Disneyland for the first time. Kaji flew all the way from MO to come live with me and all I can think of was how long of a flight that was for my 1 yr old boy. I knew Kaji wasn't a tiny, but when I finally got there and saw him in his crate curled up as tight as he could all I could think of was how cute he was and how TINY!!! He made himself smaller than he really was. I remember rushing to sign for him, and of course signing in the wrong box , then rushing outside to some benches to get to know my little guy. Armed with chicken in my hand, I fed him little piece by piece until he trusted me enough to come to the front of the kennel. I wanted to cry! He was the cutest thing in the world, exactly what I had I always pictured for my first dog, and what I had been dreaming of for 20 years. Here he was, all mine. Something you need to know about me is I LOVE fast cars. Mine is an economical car with a little speed, and I usually don't follow speed limits (shh! don't tell!) but the ride home I swear I didn't go over 45 on the freeway because I didn't want to scare him more than he already was, it was a short drive anyway. I tried to walk him, he wouldn't move because of the unfamiliarity of his new surroundings, and I even lost my car keys. What a morning! I bathed him, my cousin came over and found my keys in the parking lot, and it was nothing but ooing and awwing over this tiny creature that tried to mark my roommate's couch several times. Did I mention it was his birthday? My cousin convinced me we had to celebrate. Off we went to Downtown Disney, meeting up with my brothers and Kaji hanging out in my messenger bag for school. He slept for the most part and wasn't even frazzled by the fireworks. Poor pup was tired. Ever since then, Kaji has been my faithful companion. I take him everywhere I possibly can. Date night's with bf , family trip to the Grand Canyon, and sitting on the couch reading up on all the other pups on YT. I love my munchkin and I can't even remember what life was like before he got here.

| I remember my first few days with Sophie Kate. My first time meeting her was in a parking lot for Restoration Hardware, I had met her previous owner there with the thought I was going to "babysit" her for a week because the original owners husband did not like her and was yelling at her (big jerk, editorial comment sorry). I was told Sophie Kate was "untrainable" at 14 weeks, surprisingly enough when they brought Sophie Kate that was all they brought, no food, no harness, no crate - nothing because they didn't have this stuff. Imagine my surprise!!!. Before picking her up I made arrangements with my Vet to check her out so we went immediately to the Vets office. Since there were no records of shots I had her get her first set of puppy shots. While she was there I made a quick trip to Petsmart for a leash, harness and potty pads (The Vet loaned me a crate at first). When I went back to get her from the Vet Sophie Kate as all wiggly and happy to see me, that is what won my heart. We had her for one week, training was going really well and she was just the sweetest little girl. I made arrangements for her "owner" to pick her up on a Friday night from my Vet since I had to leave town the prior day for business. On Saturday I got a call from the Vets office saying no one had picked her up and one of the Techs would take her if I didn't want her, I passed on that offer and went and brought my little girl home. Sophie Kate has been with us ever since, she is a sweet, well mannered little girl who is perfectly trained.

| I was so excited to pick up Jackson. I arranged to get to the person's house around 10am but I had been awake at 7am just waiting and waiting. He was MY first dog that was solely mine and I just couldn't wait. I had already picked out a name for him and gotten him an ID tag and collar. I had done sooo much shopping at Petsmart a few days prior. He was *so* nervous in the car and he actually threw up, poor little guy. The "breeder" told me that "puppy #1" (Jackson) had been the one to throw up in the car on the way to the vet. So the car ride there was a bit rough but I expected him to be nervous. Once he got home, he settled RIGHT in. Here's a video from his VERY first day home (well, at my dad's house... the other dog is my dad's dog!) God, they don't stay like that for long!

| Bella, Our First Dog Ever Some dear friends of ours inherited Bella through a family tragedy. They took her when she was under 2 lbs. and very young. After 6 weeks they decided Bella was not safe in a home with a 2 year old and 5 year old. They knew we were cat lovers and asked us if we would take Bella into our home. Never having had a dog before we asked lots of questions and were a little hesitant because we knew it was a life-long committment. Well, they asked us if we would watch Bella for 6 hours because they had lots of errands to do (ha, ha) and we said yes. Needless to say, we spent 6 hours with her and were hooked. We took her in a day later and now we have had her for 8 months and can't imagine life without her. We always "looked down" on dog people and never understood their devotion. I am proud to say we are now "dog people" and understand just how wonderful it is to have a dog. Bella has a wonderful life and we spoil her constantly. She is a joy and adds so much to our life. We are grateful for the day we agred to "puppysit" for 6 hours because that turned into a lifelong love story. |

| I am seeing a pattern here, be careful when you puppysit because they grow on you and end up being with you forever. I do not regret it one bit, Sophie Kate is one of the great loves of my life.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | When I got my first Yorkie, Zorro, living on my own, I was well prepared to be up all night with him and I was right. He slept all night and I was up checking on him all night!! He didn't seem to bond to me right away but at about 6 months, he got real sick and the vet stayed until midnight to pull him through(before 24 hour vets). He has to stay at the vets for 2 days and when I picked him up he was like a different dog. He loved me and never left my side when I was home. He wouldn't let anyone else even hold him. And that's how he was for the rest of the 12 years I had him.

| We got Bandit from a BYB and PA and drove all the way back to MD. From the moment I held him I was in love. We stopped every 30 minutes to let him go potty on potty pads we put on the parking lot floor, we tried to feed him and give him water (which he never ate or drank). By the time we got home a 5 hour trip had turned into 8 hours! He still hadn't eaten or drank anything so we gave him some Nutrical. We put him in his crate and he was crying so much DH slept on the floor by his crate...he was in love too We had so much fun playing with him the next day, he was cuter and more loveable than anything we'd ever seen before He still hadn't eaten or drank anything so we called an ER vet and they told us to rush him in....he was only 1 pound 6 oz....about 4 hours later (and hundreds of dollars) he was diagnosed with coccidia, kennel cough, and worms. They gave us canned food and a syringe thing to help us feed him. He started eating that night and finally pooped!! When I had to go back to work that Tuesday (Memorial Day weekend so no school on Monday) I didn't want to go. DH worked across the street so he came home at lunch to feed him and take him out. I was so excited to come home and play with him. We had his play room set up in our kitchen. We still lived in our apt which was super teeny. Bandit, DH, and I would spend hours in the 3 ft x 8 ft kitchen playing on the floor. We would get Subway every night so we'd have dinner and bring the leftover for lunch so we wouldn't have to make lunch the next day. It was so much fun!!! |
