| Taking yorkie to the beach? Hi All, I am planning a vacation this summer where I'll be staying at a beach house for about a week, and really want to take my furbaby with me. I've seen photos around of Yorkies on the beach, wearing little life vests and seemingly having a good time. I would really appreciate any advice anyone has about introducing him to the water, good life vest brands, fun games to play, etc. (We won't be going on boats, but I would love for him to be able to swim). He's really adventurous (of course) and loves everything outdoors, so I don't think this would be out of his realm of comfort. Thanks! |

| He sounds like he will be perfectly fine! Jackson is a total outdoor, adventurous dog and he LOVES the beach! He runs along in the water, he loves it! He swam in my dad's swimming pool all last year without a lifevest but I'm planning on getting him one for next year so he can last a bit longer. They sell cute ones at Petsmart. Playing a game of fetch, frisbee, etc is always fun!

| I take Bella to the beach here often. When we're at the inland waters of the ocean, there's no big waves or anything so she'll follow us into the water and swim. I'm getting her a life jacket this year to make it safer, especially when we're on the boat. When we're at the beach of the ocean she only goes into the water to chase birds which she doesn't catch. I wouldn't let her go any deeper than the shore line. Those waves knock me over. Toys are good. Lifejacket is a good idea. Make sure you bring a long leash, most beaches require it. Towels are good too, Bella gets just covered in sand and even with rinsing at the beach, you never get it all out there.

Thor's Human Donating Member | Thor does not like the water, but still loves the beach. Go figure. I put a life jacket on him the first couple times, but now I'm completely sure he won't try to swim, so I just let him run around and get dirty. He has a great time chasing birds, playing fetch, etc. |

| Make sure there are dog friendly beaches in the area where you are staying! A lot of beaches are closed to dogs. |

Senior Yorkie Talker | I took Taylor to the beach for the first time last weekend - she's 6 months. I'm always so afraid to let them off the lead but she behaved so well! She would run a distance and come straight back when I called. I don't know about life vests (sounds interesting tho!) but I was with her the whole time and she played endlessly in the water and only ventured in where she culd feel the sand under her feet. She loves to swim! We take her to our farm and she gets in the river and dam and swims properly but the water is still. If any other big dogs were walking our way we simply clipped them on in a responsible manner and then let them off again once they were passed. Just remember there are some people who don't have the same respect for others as you might so clip them on the lead if there are other dogs to be introduced to. Your's will LOVE it I'm sure! All that sand to dog and roll and get dirty and wet! Mine loved it and she will be going every weekend from now on

| Going to the beach is a great idea! My Duchess loves the water! I never knew it till we went to a Yorkie get together and there was a doggie pool and she jumped right in. Our first time at the beach she kept whinning b/c the kids were playing and laughing in the water so I let her go and she ran right in and swam to them! Then turned around and kept going to shore and to them. She absolutely loved it! She didn't have a vest bug the water wasn't too deep b/c my kids are still small and weren't in too far. By the way we're going to the beach as well for spring break with Duchess in tow! She's gonna have a blast! I hope yours does too! Enjoy!

| Sadie loves the beach. (well the sand) She's not a big fan of being in the water tho. There is a pict. of her and I running on the beach at a lake in my album. The worse is after all the fun, getting her sand free. Have fun! |

| Items to bring... So Avery loves to go, go, go, but in the Louisiana heat it's very hot. We visit our 'beaches' and I find it important to bring: -- Doggie sunscreen -- a Gulpy water bottle (VERY useful for on the go-- even not at the beach) -- a Cool-It bandana (you simply submerge it in cold water for 30 minutes and it keeps your pup cool for hours) -- and, it may sound insane, but doggles (the UV rays are super harsh here and Avery cannot adjust to the sun) I hope this helps. If you only get 2 things-- I highly recommend the bandana and the Gulpy! These are total lifesavers for dehydration! |
