Default Puppy eyes not same size! Help!

Hello all,

I am seeking some advice. I just received a new puppy from a breeder that I have been with in contact with for months. I received multiple emails about the puppy being healthy and pictures that appeared to show the puppy to be normal and healthy. One of the pictures I received showed that one eye was smaller than the other, but I thought it as just the spot around her eye making the picture look weird. I got the actual puppy two days ago and when I brought her to the vet, the first thing he told me was that the two eyes were different sizes. The right eye is 1cm and the left eye is 1-1/2cm. She also had abrasions that could have been ulcers so the vet put her on antibiotic eye drops for one week. The vet also said she does not produce tears in that right eye and an insufficient amount in the left eye. Basically she is at risk for infections and blindness for her whole life because of the chronic dry eyes.

I have a contract with the breeder to trade the puppy in for one of equal value if it is not healthy. Would this be a reason any of you would trade her in? It's a hard call because she is exactly what I have been looking for (an almost all white parti yorkie) despite the eye problems, I don't know if I should keep her, seeing that I got her for breeding, and the vet said this could be genetic and could pass it on to future litters.

Should I return her? Or will this not pass on to future pups? How common is the dry eye thing in yorkies?

Well, she shouldn't be used for breeding and, with dry eye, you may end up having to use eye drops several times a day for life. Sometimes surgery is done to reroute saliva into the eye, I think. It comes down to whether or not you're attached. If yes, spay and get ready to take care of any potential problems. If no, then you could always send her back; but remember not all breeders are wiilling to take care of unhealthy dogs, so it is possible that if she doesn't end up producing tears, she could be euthanized...

I say "take" her back and look over any puppies available for sale, unless you can just get your money back and go to a more reputable breeder. It's been said a million times............buyer beware. Never buy a puppy sight unseen. Always go to the breeders home to see how they live and their breeding practice.

Well, I couldn't trade that baby in not knowing what would happen to her. But I guess I'm too soft, attach too easily and not a breeder. I think she is just beautiful.

As a breeder of Yorkies of color myself, I personally would not breed that dog. That is just the first problem for this little pup , what else could be hidden or lurking. I have a hard time to not lose my civil tongue when I hear about a breeder selling another breeder very poor breeding dogs. Was this pup even taken to a vet before coming to your house? Does the breeder of the litter not even see that the eyes are different sized? It is very obvious in that pic. That pup should have been sold on a spay/neuter contract. When breeding you want a great example of the breed, and using that pup would be starting with a poor example of health right from the start. Please do the right thing for the breed and the Parti line and give that puppy back to the breeder.
You may be attached to the pup and if that is the case, spay her and keep her as a pet, knowing that she could become blind. But would you want to pass that on to a litter of puppies knowing that one or more of them could end up blind...and then...keep going down the line until multiple partis have that in their lines... scary but think about how many potential pups could be affected. This is soo frustrating
Sorry I will get off my soap box now...

Ok guess I was not done. Dry eyes are getting more common, and the dogs have to be on the drops for life. Check out yorkie rescues and you will see that a good portion of them have dry eyes and need drops for life..probably one reason why they were turned over to rescues or shelter..people want healthy dogs, once their beloved pet needs daily medicines and medical bills, many turn to shelters and place them or just dump them from one home to another.
I swear I have seen that pup on a website in the past 2 days!! as I am hunting for the elusive perfect male of color....please Private message me with the details if you dont mind so I can stay away from that breeding...I would greatly appreciate it. I can see you are in California...and their are a few breeders there ... my girl Cookie came from Cali...
I am very sorry about your predicament. I would return the pup, and check into getting your money back or pick from a completely different set of parents, it will save you alot of heartache and break and money in the long run.

She is adorable but not worthy of being bred - as you've been told. Poor thing! If you keep her - spay her and love her. If not, try to get your money back and look for a good breeder! The eye problem is obvious and her vet should have discussed it with her - if she used one!

That's what this breeder was banking on when he/she sold her. There is no way they didn't know of these problems.

This puppy will need life long treatment for the dry eye and vision problems that will come with it. It is a painful condition if not treated daily. This puppy should be spayed, and taken care of for the rest of it's life.

I'm afraid breeding is not an option with this girl. I would take the puppy back ASAP. However, I would also NOT want a replacement puppy from these breeders. Because if they sold this puppy (I am assuming for a hefty price tag as well) to you without informing you of these problems...they have no ethics to begin with.

I have a girl with dry eye and it can be a time consuming and costly thing to take care of. You mentioned your contract is only for a trade in. I just hate to think about this girl going back to this obviously irresponsible breeder, because she should certainly not be bred. Who's to say the breeder will not breed her?

I seriously doubt you will get a dog healthy enough from this breeder to breed. It seems you have received a beautiful girl to enjoy as a pet. Please have her spayed, she should not be bred.

I am currently raising a litter of 6 week old puppies and I know how much time I spend with them. If they had any problems whatsoever, I would know it! There is no way that I believe that her breeder didn't see this with this puppy. Would you feel comfortable sharing with us who the parti breeder is that you purchased her from??

how could anyone pick up a precious puppy and then even contemplate returning him/her because they are not perfect? I am only saying this because these babies can go immediately to your heart on first sight!
