Animal Smiley 019 She holds a grudge...

Well Saphirs is 15 weeks old now and I got her when she was 10 weeks old. I have given her a bath every week since I got her. She HATES it!!! After the bath, brush and dry is done...so is she. She's done talking to me, playing with me, cuddling with me and having anything to do with me at all. She is so mad that I gave her a bath that she holds a grudges that last up to a couple hours. It is funny when you hear about it but she makes me feel like I've abused her or committed the ultimate crime. I hope she grows out of it or gets over it soon.
I never thought I would get the silent treatment from a little 1 pound drama queen.

Do you give her a treat when you are all done. Also I stay calm when bathing and talk in a soft voice and tell Pixie how pretty she is.

I give her a treat, she takes it and basically tells me to F myself. Lol. She also hates the blow dryer. Guess she will just have to get used to it...otherwise I'll take her to the groomer to bathe and then I can be the rescuer. Then she'll be happy to see me after a bath.

The bath is a scary experience, and sometimes we forget to do a few things that make them feel safe. It's not about them being safe, it's about them "feeling" safe, and some dogs need more help to feel safe. I give Joey a bath in the kitchen, and I put lots of towels on the counter, so it feels padded to him and not cold, like a doctors table. I use a rubber dish pan in the sink as his tub, so that he doesn't feel like he's slipping all over the place. I test the water with the inside of my arm and it's better to error on the cool side, dogs and puppies, especially, cannot tolerate hot water, they may not signal to you that it is too hot, so you have to test for this. I heat a towel for Joey so that after his bath, he's wrapped head to toe in a warm towel, and he loves this part, he could lie there 30 minutes if I'd let him. I blow-dry him with a quiet blow dryer because the little guy gets chilled easily, even here in AZ. When he was a puppy, he would get a Cheerio throughout the process, and this helped him learn to tolerate it. I think it's better to go slow at first, and get them to "feel" safe, and later you can do a more through job of washing and grooming. I'm not sure she will outgrow this without your help, you're attitude is important too, you need to be firm without be coddling, or aggressive, this too will make her feel safe. That said, Joey still runs when he sees me getting out the bath stuff!

Oh thank you, but I loved having human babies and I loved playing with dolls, so the yorkie is the perfect doggie for me.

Yes, I believe they hold grudges, even if not a Yorkie. Our Cindy was in a bad way about two weeks after spaying and even though the vet wouldn't say it, she had Parvo. The signs/symptoms were unmistakable and they put her in isolation.

At the start of a long holiday weekend we decided to take her home and she would either die in our arms or recover, since the vet had little to no coverage that weekend.

They brought her out and she refused to look at me, I petted her and she jerked away! Like, why did you bring me to this awful place? It took her DAYS to trust me again! We're buddies now and I can't even take a shower without her wanting to be right at the shower door.

Oh goodness, the little bugger. My Leilah also can not stand her baths. She is NOT treat/food motivated and will not take anything I offer when she is being made to do something she does not enjoy. I have tried bacon, hot dogs, cheese, cheerios, you name it. She doesn't like the blow dryer either but she tolerates it better. I think I will take some of Nancy's advice and see if I can make the sink a bit more comfortable for her. It breaks my heart to see her so upset, but thankfully she doesn't hold a grudge and offers kisses right after.

Default bath time

Rocky was not a big fan of the bath either. I now make it a soothing quiet time. I fill both sides of the kitchen sink with 4" of warm water and a towel at the bottom. I no longer use the sprayer at all. A plastic cup is used to calmly wet him down, then we shampoo lightly with a low suds shampoo and I use a wash cloth on his face. Rinsing in the second sink and then to a warm towel. I do this all slow, and give him nice rub down in the process. I treat him like he is in a Zen spa. I know it sounds a little crazy, but it makes all the difference in the world. He actually seems to like it now.

BUT after the bath, and groom, when I clip his nails, he is sure something bad is going to happen. And he gives me the cold shoulder for an hour after the nail clipping. I read a thing about doing one nail per day, to get them used to it. I'm going to give that a try.

Tongue I am forgiven...

By the afternoon Saphira finally came and gave me kisses. She was really mad this time.
Thank you for the advice but I do pretty much everything that has been suggested. I bathe her in my sink that has rubber at the bottom, test the water, give the treats, wrap her in a warm towel from the dryer, blow her dry and brush her. I also talk to her nicely the whole time to try and ease her during the bath. She isn't scared just royally ticked off.

Ella has gotten so good about bath time. I talk to her sweetly and treat her when we are done. She actually loves the blow drying part, the bath not so much. I do believe they hold grudges though. If we leave Ella alone right when she gets up when we return home we almost always get a mess, a poop on the floor or something torn up. She is a little stinker at times. I really hope it gets better for you as she grows up. =]
