Donating YT 30K Club Member | Bringing in a rescue/rehome male I have been helping an elderly lady that lives in the same senior apartment complex as my Dad, with her 12- 13 year old rescue yorkie. Nikki is a a male who was found on the streets of Chicago 2 years ago and this lady adopted him. This lady has fallen on hard times and I took over Nikki's vet and food bills. The lady, Carol, had a stroke on Saturday and is now in ICU with left side paralysis. She had a less serious stroke 3 years ago and while she was in the hospital her 2 adult children gave the dogs away. One was a yorkie and one was a greyhound, both rescues. She has not spoken to them since and her big fear was that if something happened to her, Nikki would be given away. I told her I would keep him until she can get home or forever if needed. When I went to see her today at the hospital she was in worse shape than the other day and I told her she really needed to let her family know. So I contacted her brother and he told her kids. The dtr called me and I told her Nikki was coming home with me and she seemed fine with that. The neighbor has been keeping him at night and I take care of him during the day. Now that we know she will not be back for a long time I will bring him home with me. I brought him over today to introduce him to my 3 girls and Cali liked him, Pixie ignored him and Roxie was chasing him. He was pretty stressed out and kept running around and crying. My husband wants me to bring him home tonight now that her kids know she is in the hospital so they can't get rid of him. I am nervous as I haven't had a male in over 30 years and he was my only dog. Nikki is neutered but I am afraid of him marking. Any help would be appreciated on how to get him acclimated to my household. We have no idea how his first 9-10 years were and now 2 years later he is being brought into a much more active environment. I have never had a true rescue as the pom I fostered was a puppy and not old enough to be effected by her environment. So any advice on how to get him to settle in would be appreciated. He will not go in a crate. Thanks

Donating YT 500 Club Member | Bless you Patti, you're so good to help your neighbor and save Nikki! I would recommend an ex-pen at least until you know better how Nikki is going to fit in with your household. He will be less likely to mark if he's confined and it will allow him to interact with your family before being turned loose completely. With my fosters I always confine them to an ex-pen at first. I think it makes them feel more secure to have an area of their own.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks! He is home with us now. He is very restless and crying. I have him confined to my bedroom and the hall. He did potty outside which is good.

| You might also want to consider "tethering" him to you, if you can. It might help him bond with you, and you can keep a closer eye on him as you work around your home. It must be upsetting for him to "displaced" again, but with time and love I'm sure he'll settle back in. Luckily he and your neighbour found you! |

| So sorry to hear about your friend, so sad. poor doggie must be missing her. So nice of you to take him in. it will take time but he should warm up. its just all new to him. I think keeping him in the bedroom & hall is what I would do too. I dont care for the crating or tethering him that might make him even more stressed out. keeping him off in another room I think is best, this way he can hear and see all of you yet have his own space for now. I wouldn't do the belly band either unless you catch him marking. good luck and keep us updated on him. Last edited by YorkieShadow; 02-16-2010 at 06:24 PM. |

| I'm not sure to help with marking, but to help with him feel less-stressed out, could you take some blankets or pillows so he has a familiar smell? Good luck, and kudos to you for being so helpful, and putting an elderly woman's mind at ease while she's in the hospital. |

| Oh, you probably have no idea how much you are going to help your neighbor recover by taking care of her little man. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks. I brought his bedding with me and washed it because it was so dirty and his one bed fell apart but I put his other bed next to me on my bed and he is sleeping soundly next to me. My girls have all settled down. He learned to use the ramp right away which is good. He couldn't sleep on his owners bed because she had one of those real high beds but he seems happy sleeping on my bed and I have a night light on so he can get off during the night if he wants to. I feel so bad for him and his owner. One of the nurses in the ICU asked if I could bring a picture of him up for Carol as she thought it would help Carol in her recovery and said that she was trying to engage Carol by talking to her about Nikki. I thought that was so sweet of her. Hopefully everyone will get a goods nights sleep. One strange thing happened tonight, my husband, who has been wonderful with Nikki, was playing on the bed with Roxie tugging a toy from her and Nikki ran over and growled at him. So I guess we will learn what upsets him and try and work with him. He was fine right after and was licking my husband's hand. I will keep you posted.

| You are truly a wonderful friend taking in Carol's little guy while she is recovering from her stroke. I'm sure they miss each other terribly but at least she knows he is safe with you. Just keep doing what you are doing. He just needs to adjust to his new enviornment. Did he mark when he was living in Carol's home or are you just concerned because he is now in your home? If he wasn't marking before he should be just fine. But if you do see him marking then you need to use a belly band immediately. When I brought Bogey home he peed all over my kitchen. I thought I was going to lose my mind. Now he is the best of the 3 If you need ANYTHING just shoot me a PM and I will help you as best as I can. BTW his picture with your friend is adorable. They look like they really love each other.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Thanks, Nikki slept all night next to me on my bed, I actually reached over a couple of time to make sure he was still alive!! Wish my 3 would sleep like that. He went all night without going out even when I took mine out at 4 am. I got him up at 7, he went outside, ate and finally pooped (in the house) but we will work on that. Roxie is very jealous but hopefully she will get over it. Megansmomma- I don't think he was marking at Carol's as much as having accidents as she couldn't get him out as often as he needed. Seems like he was peeing by her front door. So far he has gone outside everytime. Thanks for the offer and I may be in touch.
