Help I am helpless!!!!! Little Dewey is 16 weeks old. He is very smat he will sit, sit/stay, down, down/stay, come on command. Except when he thinks he is going into his create. Then he runs from us and is very had to catch. (he is so fast). He thinks we a playing I believe. When we catch him and head toward the create he becomes a little devil. He barks and yips until he gets tired. He also yips if you walk by. He will go into his create at night or if he is sleepy no problem. He will even go into the create on command but he will dart back out again. What can I do to keep him from running from us? He also runs as fast as he can around the living room when he gets into trouble. Barking the whole time. Last edited by Hooper; 10-11-2005 at 07:40 AM.

| He's only 16 weeks, it just takes time, everything is a game to him right now. They do have puppy classes you can take him too. Just make sure he has all his shots before he starts.

Sounds like a purebred Yorkie to me!!! Oh, aren't they just crazy!?! If only I could bottle some of that energy up and use it myself! Or atleast have them help clean the house! Anyway, I'd suggest never chasing....they do think it's fun. That is the first thing I teach my family.....never chase a puppy. I would use a treat. Give him a piece of it when he comes to you and another piece once you have very calmly placed him in his crate. I'd say "Crate, good boy" several times as he is eating his second piece of the treat. Good luck. You are very fortunate to have such a well trained pup at such a young age! LUCKY YOU!!!!!!

What a cute impish fellow. A couple of things you can do--first, stop chasing him. Make him very familiar with the word "treat" and make that treat, well, I use another brand of dog food. Remember, Hansel and Gretel (don't you dare tell us you are too young to know Nursery Rhymes! LOL) Start droping a treat near him; walk away a few steps and put your hand down with a treat showing. Continue this til he is close to the crate and toss some really yummy treats in. When he goes in, PRAISE HIM as if he has done the most wonderful thing in he world. Close the door and walk away. At no time can you use the "I am so sorry you have to go in there" voice. They pick up on that tone so quickly.. I also leave the crate open and sitting in the room where I am or where they sleep. Toys are tossed all the way back in the crate when I leave or when I am just working in that room. I do not close the door as they need to be able to learn the crate is a safe place. It will take a while, but it will work. I have 7 younguns to go into an X pen each night. When we start setting up the pen, they get so excited and run in circles til we let them in. I use a wee bit of chopped chicken breast in a plastic bag with the "other brand" of dog food. Because I can figure the treats into their daily allotment, I do not have fatties.. Good Luck with either training him OR being trained by him..

This is one smart boy, so you should be able to quickly train him to come on command. The easiest way for me was to put Chloe on her leash and back away from her. Then, told her to come, with a gentle pull on the leash and a treat. Continue to back further away until you can discontinue the leash, say the command and your dog will come to you. I use slice, peeled apple for training treats. When there are times Chloe just knows what is going to happen and doesn't want to come, she'l heel down and look up at me with those big eyes. I taught her to stay when she's down, so then when I just have to get her, she doesn't run away. To do that, when your dog is sitting, put your treat in your hand and put it on the floor, with the command, down.
