| AKC Registration and DNA testing? I purchased a Yorkie puppy from Pam Brummitt, "Brummits Yorkshire Terriers", also "My Hearts Desire Yorkie's", among others, as I have found out after dealing with her. I paid $1200 for what was supposed to be a purebread "teacup" yorkie, at 12 weeks she already weighs 3.5 lbs. I have requested the AKC registration form, from Pam but she said she used the father "JJ" as a stud three times last year so she has to have his DNA tested before she can register the litter? I picked up the puppy December 19th, and now she tells me it can take months for the DNA test to come back? Does anyone know anything about this. Why would you sell a puppy if the litter hasn't been registered? Is this just a puppymill? |

Donating YT 2000 Club Member | Yes you have to Dna if they have more than 3 litters. I didn't know this back in the summer until I got a letter. It held my friends papers up for a while. I am thinking it took 6-8 weeks to get the dna back. Weight is a hard thing to predict. My puppies are 12 weeks and range from 2 1/2 to 2 3/4 I expect the biggest one to reach 5 1/2- 6 pounds. Do you realize there is no such thing as a teacup yorkie?

However, it's the breeder's responsibility to get it done ASAP....DNA certification should take maybe a month to get back. It shouldn't take months.....You order the kit from AKC via their website. You get it at the most in a week, you swab the cheek, mail it back, at the most a month. Once she has that in her hands, she sends in the litter registration......takes a couple of weeks to get that back. And your right, weight and size is one of the most difficult things to predict. I've seen some get to 3 pounds at 8 weeks and maybe put another 1/2 pound that's it. Then I have one that was 3 1/2 pounds until she was a year old, she's now 7 pounds at 8 years of age. She just did a growth spurt.....

| yes, I know there is no such thing as a "teacup" yorkie, unfortunately that's the way many breeders advertise and the term gets repeated, thanks for sharing your information. |

Glad you know that there is no such thing as a "Teacup" and irresponsible breeders use this term to obtain a higher price from an unsuspecting buyer......Usually works on those that are looking for a tiny.

| Once a sire is used 3 times the AKC will send a letter to the sire owner that a DNA test will be required before the next litter can be registered. A breeder should know well in advance about this. The DNA kit, I think, is $40 or a little cheaper if bought from the AKC store. The breeder can go ahead and register the litter and as soon as the DNA kit is received the AKC will mail the litter registration papers to the breeder. A breeder does not have to wait for the actual DNA certificate to be issued before sending in the litter registration. |

At times, when AKC is inspecting a kennel, if puppies are on prem, they will do a DNA test on Sire, Dam and pups.
