| We use a small baby gate at our doors, that keeps them inside the house when we answer the door. You could also have them in a seperate blocked off room while you have company? I also do that. I know how sneeky and fast these lil ones can be. I am not sure about the elec fenc idea |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | They can still get outside an electric fence, you have to spend time in training, and if there is a busy street nearby, the training may end too soon. There are some ways to train a dog not to run out the door, but even though you train her this, with kids running outside she will be so tempted to follow. Wouldn't it be easier to train the grandkids? I would also think of installing some sort of double door or small fenced area outside the door. I would also work on training the dog not to run outside. Learning to stay is a very important command.

| I dont think there are any pros. They can take the shock and run out of the area and get hit, stolen, or lost, it doesn't keep other animals or people out, and its a shock would you like to be shocked I mean the list goes on and on and on. Training a dog to stay is possible it might just take a lot of work but it is very important to train them not to run out the door. You could also sit your grandchildren down and explain to them how very important it is for them to close the door or the doggie could get kidnapped or hit by a car.

| Have gates at different places in our house to protect my furbabies. There are wooden fences to put around the doors from the inside that keep the doggies away from the outside doors. ~Joanne~

| Even dog trainers don't recommend electric fences , the problem is , is that the pain of the shock from exiting the yard outways thier desire to come home . NOT only that but the collars they need to wear are really not yorkie sized and they would have to wear them constantly.. Id buy a gate of some sort to block off your front and rear door to prevent them from escaping!

YT 2000 Club Member | I know I will be critized for this, however I will post it any way since I do have an under ground electric fence for my two girls. When we first moved to our neighborhood, we noticed a lot of dogs running loose. We notified the proper authorities without any action taken from them. We had a chain link fence put up. Next we had neighbors move in next to us that had a HUGE Rottie that would lunge onto the chain link fence and try to get to our dogs and grandchildren. So, we built a wooden privacy fence a foot away from the chain link fence. This, however, did not keep our girls from going over to the fence to investigate the Rottie nor the new dogs that they got from trying to dig under the fence to get at our girls. This is where the under ground electric fence came in. We have a very big yard, so we were able to use the under ground fence on the other side of our yard away from these dogs. The neighbor dogs no longer knew that our girls where outside so, they no longer were trying to dig under the fence to get at them. Our girls weren't going over to any part of the fence, so when a stray dog or a stranger would come around they were not able to get to our girls. As to wearing the collars all the time, our girls only wear their collars about once every three months to hear the sound. Other than that we leave the orange flags up for them to see their boundaries and this works just fine. As to having collars that fit the smaller breeds...yes, they have them, you have to order them. Jasmine is only 3 1/2 pounds and she has a collar that is just for her. Yes, we tested the collars first on us before we put them on the girls. It is not an electric shock like most would think, it is more like a "static electric feel", like when you drag your feet on the carpet. We can turn our device up or down according to our "field need". When the batteries go down in the collar the device lets our a warning noise that is constant until it is replaced. Again, I understand this is not a poplular opinion, but it has worked for us. Have a Great evening!

| How old are your grandchildren? If they are young (and short) you can install safety latches up high where they can't reach so they will be reminded to have an adult let them out. This way whomever the adult is, can contain the dogs before the door is opened.

So you are saying that you have the electric fence along with the regular fencing? That I would not have as big a problem with it: as to just the electric fence. TOOOOOO many things can happen with just the electric fence. People, wild animals, larger dogs, and even the birds can still get at the dogs. Besides the fact that you are intentionally inflecting pain on them to train. I am not of the camp that uses pain to associate with wrong doing. Please, please, don't use an electric fence. The baby gate in the door frame to the outside is the best way to go!!

YT 2000 Club Member | Yes, that is what I am saying. I have a chain link fence with a privacy wooden fence and also a under ground electric fence. I am aware this is not a popular idea but it works for us and like I stated before it is not an "electric shock" it is like a "static electric" like when you drag your feet on the carpet. And again, our girls don't wear the collars all the time as stated in the above post. I know this isn't for everyone, however it has worked for us and we feel safe with it. Have a Great evening!

Senior Yorkie Talker | MY gramma used to breed pitbulls and instead of training the dogs, she trained us. So train the grandchillins first!

| I think electric fences have their place. I don't think they're ALL bad and it works well for some dogs. I don't think it would work for Jackson honestly. He's the kind of dog that if he sees a rabbit, he's gonna go chase it, regardless of what shocks him or whatever. Atleast I think that's how he would be. But with the electric fence, you're supposed to train them first to try and understand their boundaries, the electric fence is just added protection.

| I have said it before... an underground fence is the illusion of safety. It does not keep predators out. A previous poster uses a visible and invisible fence, that sounds safer! I am not against them in theory, but many people use them TOO confidently! If the children are old enough to go OUT on their own, they are old enough to learn respect for the rules, and Gran's dog! IMO
