| Won't release things from his Mouth!! Dustie is now 10 months old..and still can't stop trying to eat anything and everything..especially tissues ..paper of any kind...in fact all sorts really. I have got that a lot of times now I just ignore him..knowing that he will drop most things eventually...trouble is with tissues..he just won't and mashes them up and swallows them...I constantly try to take things from him...but to no avail..and yes I have tried trading treats..but still he won't let go..He clamps his mouth tight shut...and to be honest if I do get it open..well I know he will clamp it on my hand.. He is so good in so many ways...but this attitude towards me is very worrying... Has anyone any suggestions as to how to get them to open their mouths..or should I just let him eat anything..unless I know it will really harm him. Chrisann x

| Sophie is stubborn with the drop-it command, too. I'm afraid tissues will always be a problem. We haven't been able to keep TP on the roller since we got her . The only thing that works for me is saying "cheese" and offer her a little tiny bit in exchange for whatever she's got in her mouth. It always works for us.

| Buddy was like that at that very age. I asked my vet what to do because he would growl at me when I tried to get things from his mouth. He told me to push in on each side of his mouth with my fingers to release his jaws. I have to tell you to be careful because I almost got bit several times doing this. He would pick up pinecones outside daily and lock those jaws of his so I couldn't get to it. He was bigger too which didn't help. I'll be honest and say I put a muzzle on him for a short time to keep him from eating things like cigarette butts, pine cones etc. because he wouldn't listen to me. He got a twig stuck in his throat and I raced to the vet at 60mi an hr because he couldn't breath, one night when I got home. The vet removed it with no problem. After about two weeks I stopped using the muzzle and he seemed to understand what he was doing and it stopped. Thank heavens. I never saw a puppy lock it's jaws like he use to do. It was scary. Perhaps take a treat with you and make an exchange. I never thought of that at the time. |

| I had good luck getting my boys to learn the drop it command by using clicker training. Have you heard of that before? |

| The trick to opening his mouth is to keep his skin pinched over his teeth. He will not bite down if his skin is in the way. Also when you are trying to get whatever it is out of his mouth keep saying "drop it". Once you get it out praise him like crazy. After awhile he will start giving up what it is that he has so you will praise him. We have been doing this with Reesie for a couple of months and it has helped a lot! Hope this helps.

| Oh believe me. its a daily battle just hoping he doesn't find anything I have dropped...and now he climbs up onto furniture too...Sometimes I think he does these things just to annoy me lol.. I have actually thought about a small muzzle which would also help maybe with getting his nails cut...I don't want to frighten him though too much...but he gets so uptight when he gets things...My other Yorkies always dropped everything straight away....Dustie is so different... I have tried trading with treats..trouble is he knows this and just swallows what is in his mouth first..if he can...more worrying.!!! Chris x

| To make sure he doesn't bite you when you are opening his mouth, do as others suggested, squeeze in at the hinges of this mouth and make sure his skin is on the inside. I've done this with dogs and cats- it works wonders! It was the only way I could get my cat to open his mouth for medicine he was on. As far as making him drop it, I would suggest trading a treat for it. If he won't trade it, the treat isn't good enough. |

| This is too funny - it makes me think of Winston exactly. It's almost like Yorkies are like Sharks, they need to put everything in their mouths to determine if it's food. Anyways - I know that doesn't help because this has been one of the more frustrating things he does. He started eating everything when I first brought him home and now he is 1 years old. Winston even took it to a whole other level - the minute I would go after him to get whatever he put in his mouth, he would swallow it immediately. So needless to say I had to stop chasing him. The only way it stopped was when I started working with him every single day on the drop it command. I would start by using his toys when we were playing fetch. In order for me to throw the toy I would say "drop it" then praise him with love and continuing to play. Then I moved it to the outside on walks. Every time he would put something in his mouth I would gently tug on his leash and say "drop it" then praise when he did. At first I had to say drop it and wait, we wouldn't continue our walk until he dropped it. As soon as he did he got a mountain of praise. After a couple months of consistency now he gets it. The minute I say drop it, he lets go. I hope this helps - Good Luck!! Last edited by Winston08; 01-20-2010 at 06:43 PM. |

OMGGGG Lucy does the same thing and it drives me bananas! She isn't too bad with chewing or eating things.... but when she does have something in her mouth and I try and take it from her she just swallows it as fast as she can! Not a very good situation incase she ever has anything dangerous. Ugh- they can be such little brats haha.

| opening their mouth I have this problem with Belle also. She is a Morkie with a strong Yorkie attitude like her mom.. She loves paper of any kind, especially tissue, toilet paper and paper towels. She thinks it's a game, she comes to where I can see that she's got something and then she takes off. Finally she will get up on the couch and put her butt in the air and her head down and cover her face with one paw. It's her "look how cute I am" stance. I open her mouth with fingers on both side of her jaws and her lips are usually tucked under then she can't bite. I worry about her swallowing things before I can get to her as she seems to find every little thing on the floor. I don't get to concerened about tissue as it's usually not a big piece. My husband says then she can poop and wipe her butt at the same time . She has never really tried to bite me except when I comb her and try to work out a matt. She will snap. She is 15 months so that is not allowed at all. I tried a muzzle but she got so upset I had to give in. She has pretty much learned by the tone of my voice when she has gone too far. I had hopes of a little girly dog with ribbons and bows and cuddling with mommy. We got Belle, who we souldn't trade for the world but there are no ribbons that last longer than a few minutes. She does like to cuddle with mommy but the majority of the time is spent tormenting our 12 yr old lab or thinking what to chew up next. |

| Aw, I feel ya - I know how frustrating this can be!! I stopped Pixel from doing this by sending him to his "room" every time he had something he shouldn't. I also worked hard to perfect the "drop it" command. Now when he sees me see him with something he shouldn't, I don't even have to say "drop it" because he immediately lets it go and runs to his room putting himself in time-out lol Good luck - it just takes time and patience, but you'll get there |

| Oh they can be such little devils can't they...I have been training him to take the post from me at the door and take it to the back room and drop it for a treat..which he has been doing...Today though..he got to the door first ..and yes you guessed it..ran off with the Bill..and started chewing it up...He dropped it when he saw me coming ...So my excuse for not paying lol..."Dog ate the Bill" And its nearly true As for all the suggestions re paper etc. yes I am working on it..trouble is I get uptight with him..and he knows it...but as you all say patience is n eeded. Thanks Chris x

I am new to YT, just joined this morning The first thing I taught my little guy was "drop it" Every time he picked up something he shouldn't have I said "drop it" & then I would take it out of his mouth. Dezi is now 9 months all I have to say is now "drop it" & he just spits out whatever it is he shouldn't have. Hope this helps | |
