| I still can't do a topknot yet either! I just use little clips from Walmart, they are Goody brand and are 12 for $2. Uni stills wimpers when I do just that! On special occasions I just do the clips, then put a bow clip on top of it.

| Oh the dilemma of the bow.lol....well I cant say I am here to the rescue..let me just say that some dogs just hate hair ties and bows. My two females hate them and when I first started putting the ties and bows in they would take them out immediately but trust me just keep putting it back in and eventually they will leave it alone. Sometimes my girls take it out if its too tight or pulling on a some hair, just readjust and put it back in. I think now they would rather have it tied up then have hair in the face. Goodluck

| I will usually have my DH give Rio some sort of treat that she can't take out of his hands while I'm tying her topknot. Carrots work, or the freeze-dried chicken - just as long as it keeps her attention. I did this ever since she was 16 weeks old, so she's pretty used to it and sometimes she let's me do her hair all by myself with no treats. Just be patient and make the whole hair tying process a happy process (lots of praise, treats) and be gentle. Don't pull too hard and don't make it too tight! |

| Yes, I hate it when people say boys can't have bows or long hair! Or even worse say they are gay for doing it! Some breeds are traditionally in bows, yes even the boys. So have him wear a big manly themed bow then, like football or baseball team logo, or heck, UFC logo, what's more macho than that? LOL And my bf has long hair in which he wears in a ponytail and wears earrings too, does that make him gay? of course not.

| All show dogs wear bows, so I think yours could just as well. It is a matter of training the dog to hold still while you work on his hair. I start with having them sit on a table in front of me, and then move to a down position with head on their front feet. As soon as the head is down, I give a little massage to the head and ears. If I'm putting some moisturizer in the hair and gently massaging it in, it is the perfect opportunity to have them practice holding still. Pull a clump of the hair straight up and gather it. Massage some more, etc. etc. etc. Finally, without worrying about the parts or how much hair, put a latex (only latex) rubber band in with 3 wraps around. Give lots of praise. The dog will very soon take this out. Don't worry just wait until later in the day and do it again. Oh, and there are some wonderful boy-themed bows at molly maries pretties. Here is a picture of my boy in his tuxedo bow.

| The hair needs to be quite long to do the "swoop and loop" doesn't it? Uni's hair has some breakage, so if I put it up it will be the "palm tree". I like the "swoop and loop", how do you go about doing that? I've also seen where you do a back section and front section, then put the bow band in. So confusing! LOL

| It is really helpful to have someone show you on your own dog if possible. There are so many different ways to do a topknot. The hair isn't always long, such as in puppies. And as you know, the dog is usually moving around. But, I will try to describe the simplest way I know to do one. Part the hair from the outside corner of the eye to about between the ears. The part should be at an angle so that when you have finished both sides there will be a point at the back between the ears. Band this with 3 loops around. The band should sit about one inch up from the skin on the top of the head. Now, holding the rubber band with two fingers of the left hand, use the right hand to find the hairs at the back point of the clump of hair. Still holding the band, pull these hairs straight back, away from the face until the band is tight (not too tight) against the skin. If done properly, this should make the little poof of hair over the eyes and be snug against the head at the back. There are lots of videos showing how to do the topknot hair. It takes lots of practice to be good at it, so don't get discouraged.

| oh, my little Joey is the laughing stock of the family. It started with the blue ears, because I only had wide blue painters tape and used it to get the ears to stand.. Then I had to band him because he is a hiker. When we travel, he barks until I turn the air conditioner on in the back of the car and he lays with his face in front of it. If it is above 76 outside he barks to get back inside with the air. Then I brought him home from the groomers with a black bow in the topnot. My husband hated it. started calling him a sissy. Then the groomer had his size in a princess costume and Cabella's size in a football costume!!!Oh my goodness, the laughter my daughter and her friends had at his expense.LOL But he was soooo cute. I will try to attach photos. We call him our little DIVA dog. He is just tooo cute for his own good!!! |

| thanks for the tips. I'll keep trying. I think a proper topknot would distract from her huge ears too. I got like a thousand bands from mimimomo (thank you again!) but I can't do it! arrrrrrgh!!!!! Who does it with long nails and who does it with short nails? I have real nails that grow fast and they seem to get in the way of everything. I need to cut them...
