May be a silly question but want to know??

I dont know if this is the right thread to put this on BUT...I have Mason and eventually I want to get a female. I want to breed. This is my question...there are alot of yorkies out there for tons of money and good ppl cannot afford them. If i sold puppies for like say for example 300.00 or less....just to put them in a good home...Do you think i would be looked down on?? or be considered a "backyard" breeder? I love dogs and I see sooo many go to useless ppl and would just want a loving family to bebale to have a purebred yorkie for not much money! See what i mean??

If you do not plan to spend any money on your breeding pair and litter, you could actually afford to give them away.

If you decide to use the services of vet for all the necessary health checks, before and after whelping, xrays, tails/declaws, puppy checks, stool checks, shots, care/ feeding of parents and pups, proper equipment, grooming supplies, dental care, etc etc, etc .then you will not do it for $300 unless you have a fat bank account as a safety net...I won't bore you with the details of a litter that needs to be delivered at 2AM..that can set you back $1000 or $2000 more depending on what part of the country you live in...if you are able to get at least 7 or 8 pups in an ER litter, plus the normal litter expenses, then you should break even..Best wishes

Default breeding

JMO..when my bitch puts her life on the line, devotes all her energy and physical resources to produce and care for a litter..I feel each pup is worth a fair price. At today's prices $300 does not do my bitch justice.

Confused

I think That price might be to good to be true. If I saw that in the paper i wouldn't think this would be to call. Just my opinion.

I think it's great you want to give a break to people who can't afford a Yorkie. But Think about it......
If you do breed, It's going to cost you alot.
Not just money, but time as well. Puppies don't just come out
and then be sold. You need to make sure the litter is OK,
The birth could end up costing thousands. And that's just the first day.
They will need vet checks, shots, and food. You need to be there
24 hours a day, waiting for the birth, and then spend at least the next
10 weeks looking after them.
I am up in the air about breeding Princess, because my neice really wants a puppy. Her parents can't afford one, and I said I would give her one from Princess, and pay all vet bills and food for the baby. I'm now thinking about
finding a breeder, (because ours moved out of state) and getting her one.
I would still pay all the bills for her. I'm just not sure it's best for Princess to breed just because my neice wants a puppy. Princess is a wonderful baby, I paid $2500 for her. She's my baby, I guess I'm not ready to be a Grandma to her puppies yet. (I already have one Grandson & one on the way)
I have what ever it takes for her to have babies, I'm just not a Breeder, so like I said I'm up in the air. People think Breeders just let their pups have babies, That's not the case. Good Breeders know what they are doing, and really give 100%. I give 100% in every thing I do, and I don't think I could do that in breeding, because I don't have a clue.
Thanks for answering my question, I guess I'll spend tomorrow looking for a Breeder.

There has been some very good advice here. Paisley had her first liter almost 5 weeks ago. So far I have paid $45 for the initial exam to have her checked before she gave birth, $67 to have tails docked and dew claws removed, $62 to have the stitch removed from their tails and their first deworming and since Paisley had a large liter (she had 5 pups-large for the small breed) she developed milk fever so there was another $235 for the visit to the Emergency vet at 6am on a Sunday morning...not to mention what I went through having to leave her so they could give IV's. Now, we are hand feeding 5 pups and their food is $1.15 a can and they go through 2 cans in 3 days. You never know what might go wrong and how much it will cost to save your baby(ies).
I think it is great that you want to help out people out but realistically you never know how much you may have to spend to save a liter or to even keep them healthy once they get here. Oh, I didn't mention the cost to register your babies if you register them. I want to say it was $35 to register Paisley's liter...my hubby paid since I paid all the vet fees. It can be costly to breed.

i don;t think anybody was mean..on contrary, if yoy breed, 300 does not seem like enough for you...that;s how i see. If you going to do it, do it right and it is costly...but if you donnot mind having to put your own money, that is you decision and your decision only.

Keep in mind some of the breeder here have way more experience with it as we do...i may sound harsh sometimes but truth has to be told.

A lot goes into to being able to provide that great dog/puppy that you are going to provide. If you have the money to purchase breeding quality stock and pay for all the needed vet expenses and other items needed in the resulting litter GO FOR IT. If you do not have breeding quality stock you are not doing a service to the public.

I have organizations who contact me and I give several puppies away each year to deserving folks. Can I afford to sell my puppies at 400.00 no sorry not in the budget. With the care that my kids need, medical bills, show expenses, outside breeding fees- I am usually in the red at the end of the year. Great year is to have had fun and not be in the hole.

When you say that they are sooo expensive...maybe you just need to keep looking for the right breeder. I purchased my Silk from a very great breeder for the price of $850.00 I don't think that that is to much money to pay for a healthy quality yorkie. People just have to be patient and wait for the right yorkie to come along. I think if you have the money to burn and that you want to better the breed then go for it. Breeding is not just about helping people get a dog but about making sure that the quality and standards of the yorkshire terrier are upheld. Just my opinion

First of all I am not a breeder, but I commend you for this. If you want to sell your pups for 350.00-400.00 that is your business. Heck I would have bought from you as long as they were healthy puppies with good temperments!!! I had always, always wanted a yorkie, I got mine for 700.00, which was hard on the bank account, but I think I made a perfect mommie to Toby. He is so happy with us! Question: Maybe having a yorkie becomes like a status symbol??? I am not saying this to make anyone mad, so please don't take this wrong. But if you can just go out and buy a Yorkie for 300.00-400.00 than they maybe people think that they aren't so special??? I know there are people in this forum that are willing to pay over 8000.00 on a yorkie, and that is there business, I am sure it will have a great home, and it is your business what you decide to charge. As long as the puppies are healthy and are well taken care of, I don't see where it makes a bit of difference.

Beware what you say on here about breeding. And remember to try and uphold the Yorkie standard when breeding. It really matters to alot of people. They want a yorkie that looks like a yorkie. Please don't take some of this to heart. You will make the decision that is right for you and yours!!!
