| Calling All Ohio Members URGENT ACTION! Ohio’s HB 70 to Create Animal Cruelty Felony Desperately Needs Support! Action Alert! :For the Love of the Dog Ohio’s HB 70 to Create Animal Cruelty Felony Desperately Needs Support! Action Alert! Sunday, December 6th, 2009 By Admin - Deanna October 22, 2009 marked the one year anniversary that High Caliber K-9, a center for dog training, grooming and boarding located in Youngstown, Ohio, that was raided by local law enforcement. The gruesome discovery of seven dead and 12 starving dogs by humane agents helped serve as the catalyst for proposed Ohio H.B. 70. For more information on this bill as amended by the Criminal Justice Committee, please click here – > Laws, Acts, and Legislation. The horror at High Caliber K-9 is just one of the many animal cruelty cases that put innocent faces to the reason that this desperately needs to be passed: • House of Horrors; 9 Dead Dogs, 2 Young Children – Only Misdemeanor Charges! VIDEO • Senior Bludgeons Dog to Death for Barking – VIDEO • Firefighter Kills 2 Dogs So He Can Go on Vacation with Girlfriend The abusers/killers above were only able to be charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty because of the weak laws in Ohio. You’d think that legislators would want to strengthen the laws to protect because it’s a well known and established fact that animal abuser often go on to commit crimes against people, as if the crimes they committed aren’t bad enough. But no, guess they don’t really care because this legislation barely passed through the Criminal Justice Committee by a vote of 6-5!! Committee Members who voted FOR: Tyrone K. Yates (D-33rd District) Connie Pillich (D – 28th District) Robin Belcher (D – 10th District) Timothy J. DeGeeter (D – 15th District) Nancy Garland (D – 20th District) Mark A. Schneider (D – 63rd District) Committee Members who voted AGAINST: William P. Coley, II (Ranking Minority Member, R – 55th District) Danny R. Bubp (R – 88th District) W. Scott Oelslager (R – 51st District) Todd Snitchler (R – 50th District) Joe Uecker (R – 66th District) ACTION NEEDED ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 7! CALL AND E-MAIL ON MONDAY DEC. 7TH then mail your letter. thank you very much. The next scheduled House session is Tuesday, December 8. It is important that the Ohio House of Representatives hear from their constituents requesting a YES vote on H.B. 70 AS ORIGINALLY INTRODUCED TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE – TO AMEND SECTION 959.99 OF THE REVISED CODE TO INCREASE THE PENALTY FOR VIOLATION OF THE PROHIBITION AGAINST CRUEL TREATMENT OF A COMPANION ANIMAL BY THE ANIMAL’S CUSTODIAN OR CARETAKER TO A FELONY OF THE FIFTH DEGREE! For information on where to EMAIL and CALL your State Representative on Monday, December 7, please click here – > Ohio House Members Displayed by Zip Code. ********************************************** Sample Letter for Ohioans Dear Representative (name of Representative): My name is (your name) and I am an Ohio voter and taxpayer who resides within your district. As someone who is outraged by the sentence issued on January 22 to convicted animal abuser Steve Crowley, owner of High Caliber K-9 in Youngstown, Ohio, I respectfully request that you vote YES on H.B. Thank you in advance for your consideration. (Your name) (Your address, city, state and zip) (Your contact number) (Your contact e-mail) *********************************************** Nitro was one of 19 companion animals who suffered unspeakable torture at the hands of their abuser. MONDAY, DECEMBER 7 IS THE DAY WE MUST ALL COME TOGETHER AND SERVE AS A STRONG VOICE FOR THESE VICTIMS! For more information on Nitro Foundation, please click here – > Nitro Foundation - Home ************************************ I want to thank Liz of the Nitro Foundation for passing this information along. Since Liz’s beautiful boy, Nitro, was cruelly starved to death at High Caliber, she has been fighting to get legislation passed to strengthen the laws in Ohio… and she isn’t even an Ohio resident! Ohioans, take a stand and make a difference! If you don’t who do you expect to? Ohio is only 1 of 5 states that abuse to companion animals is not a felony. In 45 states animal abuse is considered a serious felony crime. The animal cruelty cases I listed above are only a few of the many, many out there. How many innocents must suffer at the hands of cruel abusers and never even have the chance to receive justice, their deaths and suffering in vain? Please write to your State Representatives in support of House Bill 70 – a list of Representatives can be found HERE. Share this information; email it to your friends, family, associates, post it in forums and on social networks. Support is desperately needed so this does not die! Companion animals deserve our consideration, compassion and most of all, their justice! And if you aren’t an Ohioan, you can still lift your voice in support! Ohio is not a vacuum, let the legislators know that we, animal lovers, potential tourists, people who may spend money in their state, are watching! The eyes of the country are on you Ohio, is it too much to ask that you do the right thing… finally!

| Wish I lived in Ohio so I could help out. Legislation sometimes feels so inadequate and often too late, but it has to begin somewhere and legislation is the start. Good Luck!!
