| Hates his carrier... any ideas?? I recently bought Remy a Celltei pet carrier. I love it, he does not I was wondering if anyone had suggestions how I can get him acclimated. He is going to be flying with me in June, its an international flight, so he's going to have to get used to the carrier! He has never been crated, so I don't know if that is part of the adjustment issue??? The bag arrived about 3 weeks ago. I opened it up, had it on the floor at home and in the office and tried to get him used to it. I've been calling it "Remy's bag". When playing I get him to run through it like a tunnel, chasing his toys. I put treats in it that he would go in and eat. He did not seem to mind it, and would go over to sniff it, or even lay next to it. We did this for a few weeks so he would not be afraid of it. DH is traveling this week on business, so I decided this may be a good time to begin putting him in the bag. He does not sit still in the car, and it is dangerous when I've driving with him alone. Anyhow, I did not have any trouble getting him in the bag, I put his treats in - he went in to get them and I just zipped him up. At first he was fine. Then he stared crying and pawing at the sides. I tried to be comforting, but it escalated into this nonstop cry / bark / howl. It sounded like he was being tortured... When we got to the office, I unzipped the bag, he hopped out. I put some treats in the bag which he happily went in to eat. We've done this three times, and the crying / barking is not diminishing. I wonder if I just have to "fight through it?".... and keep using the bag and hope he stops the crying / barking?? Is there anything else I can try??? For travel he is going to have to be quiet, and I am not comfortable with the prospect of sedation. But there is no way that we'd be able to deal with the crying / howling on a plane... The bag is big enough for him - he can easily turn around so I don't think he is physically uncomfortable. Anyone else have a carrier-hater that turned into a carrier-lover? | Just keep doing what your doing and he'll get used to it. Its harder for him to adjust because he hasnt been crated

| I have to think Chachi is right. The fact that he will go into it for his treats and is comfortable with play in it I have to think it's the fact he can't get out at his own will. Although yorkies can be very stubborn and vocal in time he will hopefully adjust to the fact he will eventually be let out again.

| Another thing right before you put him in the carrier to go somewhere say wanna go bye bye. That way he will associate the carrier with going with you somewhere. I can say this to my chachi and he will go right in his crate

| Keep doing what your doing with Remy, when you go to work with crate.. always let on you won!!! he will not know the difference..as for international flights once in the air I think you can take a baby out of the crate and have them on your knee.... sounds like your on the right track.. |

| Thanks for the suggestions I will add "going bye bye" and just keep trying.... Hopefully he gets used to it. He definitely has the typical willful, stubborn personality. But with other things he eventually does give in and listen to me. Confinement, however is clearly not his thing. In the car, he actually hurts my ears! And, he paws at the bag so hard and jumps around trying to push his way out that he rocks the bag, and it almost seems like he could roll it over. Sort of funny - but sort of not! Thankfully I've got several months to work through this. I really, really do not want to have to sedate him. The little guy is just going to have to learn to deal! |

Was thinking of trying a bully stick. He's never had one, and perhaps this becomes his special "only in the bag" treat.... | |

| You're doing good! Getting him acclimated to the bag was the same idea I had before our Thanksgiving trip. I had Kaji sleep in it at night. I didn't zip it up or anything like that. Kaji is use to sleeping in my bed with me and what I did was have the bag up on the bed, put a blankie of his in it wrapped him in another like a baby and put him in the bag. I didn't force him to sleep in it all night, he was free to get out whenever. After a few nights Kaji slept in it for a few hours instead of staying in for 20 mins. I took the bag with us to our walks to the park. The park is 2 blocks away and I would carry him in it, zipped up with the flaps up so he can see. Once in the park I would let him out and whenever I thought he was tired, back in the bag he went! The only difference was it was unzipped so he can poke his head out or hide it if he felt scared, which with my shy boy it often. Just a thought. I hope this helps.

| You already got alot of good tips, I started out putting Copper in for very short trips, I would drive him to his fave park, then put him in the bag, give him a treat, then walk from the car to the park area, and let him out, so he only had a very short, very positive experience. Then just gradually make the trips longer. I think that you are doing it right, it just takes time.

| Well, during today's car ride he was actually quiet, but was still "fighting" the carrier - mauling the inside, biting and scratching. The little devil actually managed to roll it over. Once that happened, the howling and barking began! I'll just have to keep trying |
