| Need answers for yorkie max HELLO EVERYONE, I'VE JUST JOINED THIS SITE IN THE HOPES OF FINDING SOME ANSWERS THAT WILL HELP OUR LITTLE GUY MAX. MAX ALONG WITH HIS MATE NIKKI WERE RESCUED BY ME AND THEY HAVE BOTH COME A LONG WAY FROM THE CONDITION I FOUND THEM IN, BUT MAX CONTINUES TO HAVE PROBLEMS WITH RUBBING HIS JAW ON THE RUG OR CARPET, THIS IS FOLLOWED BY EXCESSIVE LICKING. THERE ARE TIMES WHEN HE WILL RUN AND RUB, THEN RUB AND RUN AGAIN, HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S RUBBING HIS JAW, DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A NEURO. DISORDER OR COULD IT BE TMJ. I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY INPUT WITH THIS PROBLEM AS OUR VET IS UNABLE TO GIVE US ANY ANSWERS. |

| Probably not a neuro problem. How are his teeth ? If teeth are clean then it could be food allergy. Some dogs just itch. He is just scratching himself. And you say your vet has not heard of this???????????. If so , It's time for a new vet. Believe me you will have many other posts here on this subject. |

| When does he do this? How often? Does it seem obsessive? What kind of shampoo do you use? What food do you feed him? Seems like a lot of questions, huh? Either or both of these could be just a simple itch, food allergy, dry skin, reaction to the shampoo you're using, reaction to a chemical, or anxiety. Your vet should have discussed all these things with you. Try to keep track of when he does it. Check his skin to see if there are any dry patches or flakes. Have you shampooed your carpet recently? Changed detergents? Unless he's doing something besides the rubbing and licking - I would say you could rule out neurological. (Mine do this after they get their face washed or after their bath)

| Hi, thank you everyone who has responded and after his skin sores healed we had his teeth cleaned and he was given a shot for the allergies, but this is different, he almost seems to shiver his face like it hurts him, then sometimes he takes off running, then stops and rubs both sides of his face and he's making very strange noises when doing this. He will be due for another shot in a few days, but i don't want to miss something that makes him uncomfortable, he's been through enough. Thanks again for all the information. |

thank you for the warm welcome. To tell you a little about me, i've done search & rescue work for over 20 years and still train dogs. We also rescue horses and now have 3 rescued blm mustangs along with a friesan cross, we also have 7 dogs, all but 1 are rescues, but max's problem is frustrating as we've tried all the usual treatments to help him, so i'm hopeful this site and more experienced yorkie owners can help. Thank you again

we only use hypo allergenic shampoo on him, and i've watched him after eating, coming in from outside, etc, but i can't find the trigger. I've seen him come out of sleep and start this behavior, it doesn't last long, but at times it is intense and he makes a lot of noise when rubbing. We've done what our vet has suggested, had his teeth cleaned, given him allergy shots, but he's still doing this. I barf feed all my other rescues, with great success, but i'm holding off doing this with max and nikki, he's on science diet right now, so please any suggestions would be most appreciated. Hugs & thank you those who have responded bella

| I had a horse that did this, and looked ridiculous! Turned out he had a stick (sliver) up his nose! Worth a look, depending on when it started. Has he done it, the whole time you've had him? or did it just start?

I just contacted one of the breeders for you. I think she'll be able to shed some light on this. It's a wonderful thing you're doing with rescues. I applaud anyone who can do it. Hope we find out something for poor Max soon. Connie & Kids

When the Vet cleaned his teeth he checked his mouth and nose to make sure something wasn't stuck to the roof of his mouth or blocking his sinuses and found nothing. Max had a systemic infection when I rescued him along with many other problems, all of which are now cleared up, with the exception of the rubbing and licking, he's a happy little guy. Hugs and thank you for your response. Bella

Thank you so much, our next step is to take Max to the Gainesville Animal Clinic, people come from all over to have their animals treated there, they have state of the art tech. and if all else fails, we'll take him there for more test. I look forward to hearing from your friend. Hugs Bella
